| Exploitation Conditions | Three concrete prerequisites must hold: (1) the XWiki OIDC authenticator contrib extension (maven org.xwiki.contrib.oidc:oidc-authenticator) version >= 2.17.1 and < 2.18.2 must be installed; (2) the instance must be explicitly configured to allow token authentication - this is the decisive non-default gating condition stated in the advisory, and disabling token access is the sole workaround; and (3) the attacker must have VIEW access to the target user's profile, which per the advisory is commonly available to any registered user (and in some configurations to guests). The decisive limiting factor is the token-authentication setting: without it enabled, the token can be created but cannot be used to authenticate. Impact scales to full administrator takeover when an admin profile is viewable. |
| Impact | Signals conflict in an instructive way. The vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 9.2 (Critical) reflects the worst case - network vector (AV:N), low complexity (AC:L), no privileges in the vector (PR:N), and full High impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) because a successful attack yields authentication as ANY user, including administrators (full account takeover). However, two attenuating signals are present: (1) the 4.0 vector itself carries AT:P (Attack Requirements: Present), encoding that exploitation depends on the instance being configured to allow token authentication - a non-default precondition; and (2) exploitation-likelihood telemetry is low - EPSS is 0.44% (36th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code was identified in the provided references (the two Vicarius posts are detection/mitigation guidance, not weaponized PoCs). The description also qualifies the PR:N claim: an attacker needs VIEW access to the target profile, which is 'very commonly viewable, at least to other registered users' - implying realistic exploitation usually requires a low-privilege account rather than pure anonymity. Net assessment: this is a genuinely high-impact authorization flaw (impersonation to admin) but its real-world priority is gated by a non-default configuration (token auth enabled) and typically by holding a registered account, and there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. Treat as HIGH priority for XWiki instances that have token authentication enabled; materially lower priority where token auth is disabled. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On an XWiki instance running the OIDC authenticator (2.17.1-2.18.1) with token authentication enabled, a logged-in low-privilege user browses to an administrator's user profile - which registered users can normally view - and uses the exposed token-management function to mint an OIDC token for that administrator. They then authenticate with that token and operate as the administrator. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the flaw is conceptually simple and the fixing commit reveals the exact missing authorization check. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
Token forgery in the XWiki OIDC Authenticator extension (contrib package org.xwiki.contrib.oidc:oidc-authenticator) lets any user who can VIEW a profile page mint an authentication token for that account, so on instances where token authentication is enabled an attacker can log in as any viewable user - including administrators - resulting in full account takeover and authentication bypass. The flaw affects versions 2.17.1 through 2.18.1 and is fixed in 2.18.2; no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is low at 0.44% (36th percentile). The practical severity is gated by configuration: the token can only be redeemed where the instance explicitly allows token authentication, which the vendor states is the decisive prerequisite and whose only workaround is disabling token access.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade the XWiki OIDC authenticator extension (org.xwiki.contrib.oidc:oidc-authenticator) to version 2.18.2 or later, following the advisory at https://github.com/xwiki-contrib/oidc/security/advisories/GHSA-f2hf-pfrj-vrm7 and the fix commit https://github.com/xwiki-contrib/oidc/commit/d90d717172283aaa96bb5bb44e357f910ae64adb until the patched build is installed. The vendor states the only workaround is to disable token access - turn off token authentication on the XWiki instance, accepting that OIDC token-based logins and any clients, scripts, or integrations depending on token auth will break until the upgrade is applied. Optionally restrict VIEW rights on user profile documents (and on the ?category=userapplications view) to a trusted group so ordinary registered users cannot reach target profiles, understanding that this degrades normal XWiki profile visibility and is only a compensating control, not a fix. Because instances with token authentication enabled and broadly viewable profiles - especially with viewable administrator accounts - are the highest risk, prioritize those for upgrade and audit existing tokens for creations by non-owners while the patch is staged.

Technical ContextAI · show details
XWiki's OIDC contrib extension implements OpenID Connect provider and authenticator functionality inside XWiki, generating user-facing token management pages through Velocity templates. The vulnerable surface is the token administration template oidc-provider/src/main/resources/templates/oidc/provider/userapplications.vm, which renders the token-creation UI for a user profile. Root cause is CWE-285 (Improper Authorization): the template's access guard evaluated $services.security.authorization.hasAccess('programming') without explicit subject and document arguments, so the right check was performed against the wrong (context) subject/document pair instead of the profile owner's document. Anyone granted VIEW on a profile therefore reached the token-creation form and could issue a token bound to that account. The upstream fix commit d90d717172283aaa96bb5bb44e357f910ae64adb changes the call to hasAccess('programming', $xcontext.userReference, $doc.documentReference), binding the authorization decision to the actual viewer and target profile document, and adds integration test coverage (OIDCTest, OIDCApplicationsUserProfilePage.isAllowed) asserting that guest users cannot reach the token management page. This is a logic/authorization defect, not a memory-safety issue; exposure depends on the XWiki instance having token authentication turned on, since a created token is inert otherwise.

DescriptionCVE.org
XWiki OIDC has various tools to manipulate OpenID Connect protocol in XWiki. Starting in version 2.17.1 and prior to version 2.18.2, anyone with VIEW access to a user profile can create a token for that user. If that XWiki instance is configured to allow token authentication, it allows authentication with any user (since users are very commonly viewable, at least to other registered users). Version 2.18.2 contains a patch. As a workaround, disable token access.
Executive ViewAI
The XWiki OIDC Authenticator extension (versions 2.17.1 through 2.18.1) contains a critical token forgery vulnerability that allows any user with profile viewing access to impersonate any other account, including administrators, when token authentication is enabled. This can lead to complete platform compromise, unauthorized access to sensitive data, and potential lateral movement across the organization. Leadership should prioritize remediation because the flaw undermines the authentication trust model and could cause severe operational and reputational damage.
