Information Disclosure
Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
How It Works
Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security. This happens through multiple channels: verbose error messages that display stack traces revealing internal paths and frameworks, improperly secured debug endpoints left active in production, and misconfigured servers that expose directory listings or version control artifacts like .git folders. APIs often leak excessive data in responses—returning full user objects when only a name is needed, or revealing system internals through metadata fields.
Attackers exploit these exposures systematically. They probe for common sensitive files (.env, config.php, backup archives), trigger error conditions to extract framework details, and analyze response timing or content differences to enumerate valid usernames or resources. Even subtle variations—like "invalid password" versus "user not found"—enable account enumeration. Exposed configuration files frequently contain database credentials, API keys, or internal service URLs that unlock further attack vectors.
The attack flow typically starts with passive reconnaissance: examining HTTP headers, JavaScript bundles, and public endpoints for version information and architecture clues. Active probing follows—testing predictable paths, manipulating parameters to trigger exceptions, and comparing responses across similar requests to identify information leakage patterns.
Impact
- Credential compromise: Exposed configuration files, hardcoded secrets in source code, or API keys enable direct authentication bypass
- Attack surface mapping: Stack traces, framework versions, and internal paths help attackers craft targeted exploits for known vulnerabilities
- Data breach: Direct exposure of user data, payment information, or proprietary business logic through oversharing APIs or accessible backups
- Privilege escalation pathway: Internal URLs, service discovery information, and architecture details facilitate lateral movement and SSRF attacks
- Compliance violations: GDPR, PCI-DSS, and HIPAA penalties for exposing regulated data through preventable disclosures
Real-World Examples
A major Git repository exposure affected thousands of websites when .git folders remained accessible on production servers, allowing attackers to reconstruct entire source code histories including deleted commits containing credentials. Tools like GitDumper automated mass exploitation of this misconfiguration.
Cloud storage misconfigurations have repeatedly exposed sensitive data when companies left S3 buckets or Azure Blob containers publicly readable. One incident exposed 150 million voter records because verbose API error messages revealed the storage URL structure, and no authentication was required.
Framework debug modes left enabled in production have caused numerous breaches. Django's DEBUG=True setting exposed complete stack traces with database queries and environment variables, while Laravel's debug pages revealed encryption keys through the APP_KEY variable in environment dumps.
Mitigation
- Generic error pages: Return uniform error messages to users; log detailed exceptions server-side only
- Disable debug modes: Enforce production configurations that suppress stack traces, verbose logging, and debug endpoints through deployment automation
- Access control audits: Restrict or remove development artifacts (
.git, backup files,phpinfo()) and internal endpoints before deployment - Response minimization: API responses should return only necessary fields; implement allowlists rather than blocklists for data exposure
- Security headers: Deploy
X-Content-Type-Options, remove server version banners, and disable directory indexing - Timing consistency: Ensure authentication and validation responses take uniform time regardless of input validity

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vfio/pci: Disable auto-enable of exclusive INTx IRQ Currently for devices requiring masking at the irqchip for INTx, ie. Rated medium severity (CVSS 5.5), this vulnerability is low attack complexity.
Race condition in the Linux kernel's vfio/pci subsystem allows a local low-privileged attacker to exploit unsynchronized INTx interrupt masking operations, potentially achieving high impact across confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The flaw exists because config-space writes clearing the DisINTx bit and ioctl-based interrupt reconfiguration both modify shared interrupt state but operated without consistent locking on the igate mutex - meaning is_intx() checks could act on stale irq_type values. No public exploit exists and EPSS sits at 0.01% (1st percentile), indicating this is a targeted kernel hardening fix rather than an actively exploited vulnerability.
A race condition in the installer executable in Qlik Qlikview before versions May 2022 SR3 (12.70.20300) and May 2023 SR2 (12,80.20200) may allow an existing lower privileged user to cause code to be. Rated high severity (CVSS 7.8). No vendor patch available.

Stale netdevice pointer in Linux kernel netfilter's nft_chain_filter subsystem allows a local low-privileged attacker to trigger a use-after-free condition by unregistering a network device while an inet/ingress nftables basechain remains attached, potentially leading to kernel memory corruption, privilege escalation, or system crash. Affected systems include the Linux kernel across multiple stable branches and Debian Linux 10.0 (Buster LTS). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and EPSS at 0.24% (16th percentile) indicates low real-world exploitation activity despite the high CVSS score.

This Use of Uninitialized Resource vulnerability could allow attackers to access uninitialized memory causing crashes or information disclosure.
Use-after-free memory corruption in the Linux kernel's ip_tunnel subsystem allows a local low-privileged attacker to corrupt kernel memory and potentially escalate privileges by exploiting unbounded growth of the `needed_headroom` field in IP tunnel devices. When GRE and IPIP tunnel interfaces form a recursive routing loop, each packet transmission causes each tunnel device to increment the other's headroom without bound until the 16-bit `skb->network_header` field wraps around, causing `skb->data` to advance outside the allocated socket buffer memory region. Seven upstream patch commits are available across multiple stable kernel branches; no public exploit has been identified and this vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV.
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tls: fix use-after-free on failed backlog decryption When the decrypt request goes to the backlog and crypto_aead_decrypt returns. Rated high severity (CVSS 7.8), this vulnerability is low attack complexity. This Use After Free vulnerability could allow attackers to access freed memory to execute arbitrary code or crash the application.
Uninitialized pointer access in the Linux kernel's QCOM ASoC LPASS CDC DMA audio driver allows a local low-privileged attacker on Qualcomm hardware to potentially corrupt kernel memory or crash the system. The function __lpass_get_dmactl_handle in sound/soc/qcom/lpass-cdc-dma.c fails to initialize the dmactl pointer to NULL before a conditional branch, meaning an invalid dai_id causes the branch to evaluate against a garbage stack value rather than a defined null sentinel. No public exploit exists and EPSS sits at just 0.23% (14th percentile), indicating very low real-world exploitation interest despite a CVSS base score of 7.0.
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gtp: fix use-after-free and null-ptr-deref in gtp_newlink() The gtp_link_ops operations structure for the subsystem must be. In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dmaengine: fsl-qdma: fix SoC may hang on 16 byte unaligned read There is chip (ls1028a) errata: The SoC may hang on 16 byte. Rated medium severity (CVSS 5.5), this vulnerability is low attack complexity.
Out-of-bounds memory access in the Linux kernel's ARM64 AES-CTR bit-sliced NEON cryptographic implementation allows a local low-privileged attacker to read or corrupt kernel memory when short inputs (fewer than 16 bytes) are processed. The flaw exists specifically in the fallback path from the 128-byte-block bit-sliced NEON routine to the plain NEON assembler helper, which accesses memory in 16-byte NEON register granules without the temporary-buffer safeguard that the plain NEON glue code applies. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing has been identified; EPSS of 0.23% (13th percentile) reflects low observed exploitation pressure at time of analysis.
