MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a valid authenticated account on the target XBackBone instance (PR:L); the attacker needs no admin rights and no user interaction. Exploitation uses the POST /upload/{id}/vanity route (MediaController::createVanity) with attacker-chosen numeric upload ids that belong to other users, which succeeds because the pre-fix query looked up uploads by id alone without verifying ownership. Limiting factors: the attacker must be able to obtain an account (exposure depends on whether self-registration is enabled versus invite/admin-only), upload ids are sequential and therefore easily guessable, and impact is confined to integrity/availability of share links (no data disclosure). Affects XBackBone versions 0 through 3.8.2. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but modest-severity issue, and the available signals are consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:L) correctly characterizes it as a network-reachable, low-complexity flaw requiring low privileges (an authenticated account) with no user interaction, and only partial integrity/availability impact and no confidentiality impact - matching the description of a missing authorization (CWE-862) defect that lets one authenticated user rewrite another user's share codes. CISA's SSVC framework aligns with a low-priority rating: Exploitation=none (no observed exploitation), Automatable=no, and Technical Impact=partial. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. There is no CISA KEV listing and no confirmed public exploit, so this is not an urgent patch-now item. Net assessment: a legitimate vulnerability worth remediating, but a medium-CVSS, low-real-risk issue - it does not grant code execution or data disclosure, requires a valid account on the instance, and only enables sabotage/hijacking of share links. The vulncheck advisory and vendor commit confirm the flaw is real. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated low-privilege user on a shared XBackBone instance iterates through sequential numeric upload IDs and sends POST /upload/{id}/vanity requests to reassign the vanity share code of uploads they do not own. This breaks the victim's existing share links and lets the attacker re-register the freed codes to point at their own content. No public exploit is confirmed, but the attack is trivial given the AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N vector. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
XBackBone through 3.8.2 performs no ownership check in MediaController::createVanity(), so any authenticated low-privileged user can rewrite the vanity/share code of another user's upload by POSTing to /upload/{id}/vanity with an attacker-chosen id. Because upload ids are sequential and easily enumerated, an attacker can break existing share links (availability) and then claim the vacated vanity code for their own upload (integrity), while no data is disclosed (CVSS 3.1 base 5.3, C:N/I:L/A:L, PR:L, UI:N). Exploitation requires only a valid account and no admin rights or user interaction, and the available intelligence shows no confirmed active exploitation and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis (SSVC Exploitation: none); a fix exists upstream as commit 5e91a2a9859d20e41ee2e2403cfbe673804f6221 / PR #671, but a tagged patched release was not independently confirmed.
RemediationAI
Apply the upstream authorization fix in commit 5e91a2a9859d20e41ee2e2403cfbe673804f6221 (pull request https://github.com/sergix44/xbackbone/pull/671), which scopes the upload lookup to the session's user_id for non-admin users; upgrade to a tagged release later than 3.8.2 once the project publishes one, because as of analysis the fix is present only in the repository and a released patched version was not independently confirmed. If the patch cannot be applied immediately, compensating controls include disabling public self-registration (or converting to invite/admin-only provisioning) so attackers cannot cheaply obtain the authenticated account the exploit requires - the trade-off is that legitimate new users must be onboarded manually; restricting or blocking POST /upload/{id}/vanity at the reverse proxy or removing the vanity route so share codes can no longer be changed - the trade-off is that users lose the ability to customise or reset their own share links; and temporarily disabling share-code changes for non-admin users in code by adding the same user_id predicate (a one-line change mirroring the upstream diff) - the trade-off is a locally maintained fork that must be reconciled at the next release. Because exploitation leaves no confidentiality impact but does corrupt share links, operators should also audit and re-verify existing upload/share-code mappings for unexpected changes and regenerate codes for any link that was silently altered, and monitor POST requests to /upload/{id}/vanity with ids outside a session's own uploads. Technical ContextAI · show details
XBackBone is a self-hosted PHP file-sharing/upload application that exposes uploads as share links keyed on a per-upload code, with MediaController handling upload operations (download, vanity/code changes) through PSR-7 Request/Response objects and a PDO-backed database layer accessed via $this->database->query(). The root cause is CWE-862 Missing Authorization: the pre-fix code in app/Controllers/MediaController.php (the vanity/createVanity region around lines 204-229) resolved the target upload with 'SELECT * FROM uploads WHERE id = ? LIMIT 1', using only the attacker-supplied numeric id and never constraining the row to the session's user_id. The upstream fix in commit 5e91a2a9859d20e41ee2e2403cfbe673804f6221 branches on privilege: admins keep the id-only lookup, while non-admin sessions use 'SELECT * FROM uploads WHERE id = ? AND user_id = ?' with the session user_id, causing cross-user attempts to return 404 - behaviour codified by the added VanityOwnershipTest (owner succeeds, other user gets 404 and the victim's code is unchanged, admin succeeds). A disclosed technical writeup exists at https://hackmd.io/@1ExmmukzRMWN7B4gQ4W-4Q/ByAj-Xoifl and the affected code path is linked at https://github.com/sergix44/xbackbone/blob/226af4f0cec218f563da6d53ececfa4708e6f3e7/app/Controllers/MediaController.php#L204-L229. EUVD records affected versions as XBackBone 0 through 3.8.2; no CPE strings were supplied in the input data, so exact CPE bindings could not be cross-referenced.

DescriptionCVE.org
XBackBone through 3.8.2 contains a missing authorization vulnerability that allows authenticated users to change other users' upload share codes via the POST /upload/{id}/vanity route. Attackers can supply sequential upload ids to MediaController::createVanity() to break existing share links and hijack the freed codes with their own uploads.
