MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Command and Control, Persistence The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target site actually deploys a phpwcms front-end article content form (cnt23) with file upload enabled - this is the specific feature that must be configured for the vulnerable POST_name handler to be reachable. The pre-patch code only rejected a short extension blocklist (php,asp,php3,php4,php5,aspx,cfm,js,exe,com,bat,app,sh,jar,java), so exploitation succeeds by choosing a server-executable type outside that list (e.g. .phtml, .phar, .pht, .inc, .cgi, .pl, .py). A key LIMITING factor is the content/form/ directory .htaccess, which already denied *.php execution; where that control is enforced (Apache with the Deny/FilesMatch rules active) impact is confined to storing arbitrary files, whereas on servers that ignore .htaccess (e.g. Nginx) or where it is missing, the same upload can lead to code execution. No attacker authentication is indicated by the CVSS vector (PR:N). |
| Impact | This is a CWE-434 unrestricted file upload in phpwcms' article content form (cnt23.article.inc.php, 'Extension Check'), reachable remotely. The VulDB CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes network, low-complexity, unauthenticated exploitation, which per the rules means no attacker authentication is required. However, the vendor impact metrics are all Low (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L, score 6.9), which conflicts with the usual expectation that an unrestricted upload yields remote code execution (High impact). The source diff explains this: uploads land in content/form/, whose pre-existing .htaccess already denied *.php execution, so a dropped PHP shell would typically not execute - the patch merely hardens that .htaccess and adds extension/MIME/content filters. Thus the realistic impact is bounded to writing arbitrary non-whitelisted files rather than guaranteed RCE, matching the Low ratings. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so there is no signal of active or imminent widespread exploitation; this appears to be a VulDB-reported issue in niche software rather than a top-priority emergency. Net: real but moderate - patch on a normal cycle, and verify the content/form/ .htaccess is actually enforced in your deployment, since a misconfigured or Nginx-based server (which ignores .htaccess) could elevate this to code execution. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An anonymous visitor finds a phpwcms site hosting a front-end article form (cnt23) that accepts file uploads, then submits a file whose extension evades the limited blocklist (e.g. a server-side script type not in the old exclude list, or a PHP variant like .phtml/.phar). The crafted file is stored on the server; if the content/form/ directory's .htaccess protection is absent or ineffective (e.g. Nginx), the uploaded script can be executed, otherwise impact is limited to arbitrary file storage. No public proof-of-concept is identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Unrestricted file upload in phpwcms up to and including 1.9.49 and 1.12.3 lets an unauthenticated remote attacker upload files with server-executable extensions (for example .phtml, .phar, .pht, or .cgi) through the cnt23 article content form, because the pre-patch 'Extension Check' relied only on a short blocklist that omitted these variants. The attack requires the site to actually expose a front-end article content form (cnt23) with file upload enabled; impact ranges from arbitrary file storage to remote code execution depending on server configuration, since the content/form/.htaccess rule that denies PHP execution is enforced by Apache but ignored by Nginx and other servers. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and there is no KEV listing, though the vulnerability is remotely reachable without credentials. Vendor-released patches are available in versions 1.9.50 and 1.12.4.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade phpwcms to 1.9.50 or 1.12.4, which apply commit f4c136b467565b2d16ebe2b8276b9a03547a9a69 and extend the upload deny list, add MIME and content sniffing, and harden content/form/.htaccess (see https://github.com/slackero/phpwcms/releases/tag/v1.12.4 and GHSA-2c7r-324f-fxm4). If upgrading immediately is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to remove or disable file-upload support on any front-end cnt23 article content form, since without an enabled upload field the vulnerable handler is unreachable; the trade-off is loss of that form functionality. Ensure the content/form/ directory contains the patched .htaccess (or an equivalent server-level rule) that denies PHP and script suffixes and disables the PHP engine, and verify the web server actually honors it - Nginx and servers configured with AllowOverride None ignore .htaccess entirely, so on those stacks you must move the same FilesMatch-style denial and php engine off directive into the main server configuration. Additionally, mark the upload directory non-executable (e.g. no PHP handler, mount noexec) and have the upload path strip or rename files before they are served. Because the CVSS vector shows PR:N, treat the vulnerable endpoint as internet-reachable and prioritize internet-exposed instances. Monitor server logs for uploads with unexpected extensions as a detective measure; no public exploit code was identified at the time of analysis, but the simplicity of the bypass means weaponization is plausible.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is CWE-434 (Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type) in phpwcms, an open-source PHP content management system maintained by slackero. The vulnerable handler sits in include/inc_front/content/cnt23.article.inc.php, the front-end renderer for the cnt23 'article content' form element, and is reached via manipulation of the POST_name argument that selects the uploaded file field. Before the fix, the upload filter applied a static deny list - 'php,asp,php3,php4,php5,aspx,cfm,js,exe,com,bat,app,sh,jar,java' - which fails to cover many PHP- and script-executable extensions such as phtml, pht, phar, phps, inc, cgi, pl, py, bash, cmd, msi, dll, and dotfiles like .htaccess or .htpasswd. Because only the extension was checked, an attacker could also bypass it through Apache multi-extension tricks if the filename passed validation. The patch commit f4c136b467565b2d16ebe2b8276b9a03547a9a69 substantially hardens this path: it expands the deny lists in both cnt23.article.inc.php and include/inc_lib/content/cnt23.readform.inc.php, adds a fileinfo MIME-type check against dangerous types (text/x-php, application/x-httpd-php, application/x-executable, application/x-msdownload, and similar), and inspects the first 8 KB of the upload for PHP open tags or embedded PHP script markers. It also rewrites content/form/.htaccess to deny every PHP/script/executable suffix via FilesMatch, switches off the PHP engine with php_flag engine off under mod_php/mod_php7/mod_php8, and sets X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff. DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw has been found in slackero phpwcms up to 1.9.49/1.12.3. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file include/inc_front/content/cnt23.article.inc.php of the component Extension Check. This manipulation of the argument POST_name causes unrestricted upload. The attack can be initiated remotely. Upgrading to version 1.9.50 and 1.12.4 is capable of addressing this issue. Patch name: 118c978430f5a9668b30535f6e592c7ae8df711f/f4c136b467565b2d16ebe2b8276b9a03547a9a69/8571cb47df8d66804d1eb88ae3d1ab4fb513e1e7. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
