| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target application invoke ImageMagick's GIF encoder (i.e., convert or write attacker-influenced images to GIF output) and that color quantization fail during that encoding - the specific code path in WriteGIFImage (coders/gif.c) that previously threw MemoryAllocationFailed without freeing global_colormap, colormap, and write_info. Limiting factors: the output/target format must be GIF, the attacker must be able to supply or influence the image converted, and each attempt leaks only a bounded amount of memory, so meaningful impact requires many repeated conversions; there is no code execution, no data exposure, and no privilege gain. Affected versions are ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but modest-severity availability issue, not a top-tier priority. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N) scores it 6.3 (Medium) with the ONLY impact being VA:L - low availability - and VC:N/VI:N confirming no confidentiality or integrity loss, consistent with a CWE-401 missing-memory-release (leak) rather than information disclosure. The AT:P (attack requirements present) metric correctly reflects that exploitation depends on the attacker inducing color-quantization failure during GIF encoding, so it is not a trivially reliable one-shot DoS; impact accrues gradually as memory leaks per failed attempt. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, and no EPSS score was provided, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation. The commit diff confirms the root cause and fix (freeing global_colormap, colormap, and write_info before throwing the error), corroborating the description. Note a metadata conflict: the input Tags label this 'Information Disclosure,' which contradicts both CWE-401 and the CVSS impact profile (VC:N) - this is an availability/resource-exhaustion bug, not disclosure. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker repeatedly submits crafted images to a web service or pipeline that converts uploads to GIF using ImageMagick, choosing input that causes color quantization to fail during encoding. Each failed conversion leaks a chunk of unreleased memory, and over many requests this gradually exhausts available memory and degrades or crashes the service. No public exploit code is identified, and the leak-per-attempt nature means impact is cumulative rather than immediate. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Repeated GIF encoding of crafted or attacker-influenced images can steadily exhaust process memory in ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32, because the GIF encoder fails to release allocated buffers when color quantization fails. Remote, unauthenticated attackers who can get an application to convert or write images to GIF output can trigger a small, bounded leak on each attempt, and enough repetitions degrade availability (CVSS 4.0 base 6.3; our independent assessment scores it CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L). No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and there is no code execution, data exposure, or privilege gain associated with this flaw.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to ImageMagick 6.9.13-57 or 7.1.2-32 (or later); the fixes are commit 1c7763266cfedc635005a965169bc2ddcc650221 on the 7.x branch and 93aa075f0fa5a6ae6a83a63acc7c84283aa6d31b on the 6.x branch, and the advisory is at https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-w68r-6fmr-cvg4. Where patching must be deferred, the primary compensating control is to restrict GIF output: add a policy such as <policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="GIF"/> to policy.xml (or block GIF write rights only, keeping read rights) - note this breaks all legitimate GIF generation through the same instance, so scope it to untrusted upload pipelines rather than shared image services. Additionally, isolate ImageMagick processing in short-lived worker processes or containers with hard memory cgroup limits (e.g., systemd MemoryMax or container memory limits) and recycle workers after a bounded number of conversions, so the per-attempt leak cannot accumulate into host-wide exhaustion; the trade-off is that overly tight memory limits make quantization fail more often, which is exactly the branch that leaks, so set the cap above normal working-set needs. Rate-limiting or rejecting repeated GIF conversion requests from untrusted sources and monitoring RSS growth of ImageMagick workers provide detection and reduce exploitability, but these are mitigations only and do not remove the underlying leak.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The defect is a classic CWE-401 missing-release-of-memory condition inside ImageMagick's GIF writer, WriteGIFImage in coders/gif.c. During encoding, ImageMagick builds a global color map and a working color map and performs color quantization; when that quantization step fails with a ResourceLimitError/MemoryAllocationFailed condition, the error path previously threw the writer exception immediately, abandoning the heap allocations for global_colormap, colormap, and the write_info image-info structure without ever calling RelinquishMagickMemory or DestroyImageInfo on them. The upstream fix wraps the throw in a cleanup block that relinquishes both color maps and destroys write_info before propagating the exception, and it was applied on both the ImageMagick 7 development branch (commit 1c776326) and the ImageMagick6 maintenance branch (commit 93aa075f). The vulnerability class maps to CWE-401 (Missing Release of Memory after Effective Lifetime); there is no memory corruption, use-after-free, or out-of-bounds access, which is why the assessed impact is availability-only and limited, with attack complexity effectively raised (AT:P in the 4.0 vector) because a specific failure branch must be reached rather than merely supplying an image.

DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains a memory leak in the GIF encoder because allocated memory is not released when color quantization fails during encoding. Attackers can supply images whose GIF conversion causes quantization to fail, leaking memory with each attempt and degrading availability.
