MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated Open WebUI account that is (or was) a member of a shared folder, a non-default collaborative/multi-member folder configuration, and the specific stateful precondition that the attacker created one or more chats in that folder while holding write access and was subsequently downgraded to read-only. The attacker then issues POST /api/v1/chats/{id}/fork against one of those self-created chats. Limiting factors: valid authentication is mandatory (PR:L), the shared-folder collaboration feature must be in use, the attacker must own eligible forkable chats in the target folder, and impact is confined to inserting visible chat content (integrity) - no data disclosure or service disruption. This affects Open WebUI versions 0.11.0 up to but not including 0.11.4. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but modest-severity authorization flaw, not a high-priority emergency. The CVSS 4.0 base score of 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) reflects network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation, but PR:L confirms an authenticated account is required and the impact is limited to integrity (VI:L) with no confidentiality (VC:N) or availability (VA:N) effect - the attacker can only inject attacker-controlled chats into a shared folder, not read others' data or disrupt service. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, or KEV entry was provided, and no POC was referenced, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The exploitation path is also narrow and stateful: the attacker must be a prior write-capable member of a shared folder who was later downgraded to read-only. The input tag 'Authentication Bypass' overstates the issue - CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) and the description describe a missing folder write-access check, i.e. improper authorization within an authenticated session, not an authentication bypass; treat the risk as a collaboration-integrity/trust issue rather than a system compromise. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user who was granted write access to a shared Open WebUI folder creates several chats there, then is downgraded to read-only by the folder owner. Because the chat fork handler never re-checks folder write permission, the downgraded user calls POST /api/v1/chats/{id}/fork on one of their chats and silently inserts an attacker-controlled forked chat into the folder, where it appears to the owner and other members. No public exploit code is referenced, but the attack is a single authenticated API call. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Improper authorization in Open WebUI 0.11.0 through 0.11.3 allows an authenticated user who is a member of a shared folder to insert attacker-controlled chats into that folder by calling POST /api/v1/chats/{id}/fork on chats they created there while they still held write access, even after being downgraded to read-only. The endpoint places the forked chat in the source chat's folder without re-checking the caller's current write permission on that folder (CWE-862), so the injected content becomes visible to the folder owner and other members. Exploitation is not opportunistic: it requires a valid account, a non-default multi-member shared folder, and the specific stateful precondition that the attacker's own chats were created before the downgrade; impact is confined to integrity (content insertion) with no disclosure or availability effect, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Open WebUI 0.11.4, the first release outside the affected 0.11.0-0.11.3 range, following the guidance in GHSA-6fjc-5cg3-mgvh. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, treat the exposure by removing the stale write path rather than relying on role changes: delete or relocate any chats the downgraded member created inside the shared folder (both the source chat and any existing forks) before or at the moment of downgrading them, since those self-created chats are the only entries eligible for the fork-abuse path; the trade-off is loss of chat history that other members may still be using. Alternatively, remove the user from the shared folder entirely instead of downgrading them to read-only, which closes the vector but also revokes all their access to folder content. Restricting shared-folder membership to trusted accounts and auditing folder membership changes limits exposure, at the cost of reducing the collaboration functionality. Note that authentication is mandatory, the shared-folder collaboration feature must be enabled and configured for multiple members, and the exploit chain requires the stateful precondition described above; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, so emergency out-of-band patching is not required, but scheduled upgrade to 0.11.4 is recommended.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Open WebUI is a self-hosted web front end for interacting with large language models, and it supports a collaborative "folders" feature in which chats can be shared among multiple accounts with per-member permission levels (write versus read-only). The vulnerability class is CWE-862, Missing Authorization: the chat fork handler (POST /api/v1/chats/{id}/fork) copies a chat into the folder of the source chat but authorizes the operation based on the requester's relationship to the chat rather than performing a fresh check of the requester's current write permission on the destination folder. Because authorization is effectively evaluated against stale creation-time entitlement instead of the folder's present ACL, a user whose access was intentionally downgraded to read-only retains an indirect write path into the folder. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:open-webui:open-webui:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with the reported range 0.11.0 to before 0.11.4 identifies the affected self-hosted Open WebUI deployments; the assigned v4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N) and the independently assessed v3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N) both indicate network reachability, low attack complexity, mandatory low-privileged authentication, no user interaction, and a low integrity-only impact with no confidentiality or availability loss.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Open WebUI from 0.11.0 before 0.11.4 contains an improper authorization vulnerability in the chat fork handler, which places forked chats in the source chat's folder without checking folder write access. Shared folder members downgraded to read-only can call POST /api/v1/chats/{id}/fork on chats they created there while they had write access, inserting attacker-controlled chats visible to the folder owner and members.
