Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that guest checkout is enabled on the Thirty bees store, and that the attacker knows the email address of an existing registered customer. The attacker must place a guest order with the victim's email to generate a guest account whose secure_key is then accepted by PasswordController::resolveCustomer() as a valid password-reset token because guest and registered accounts are not distinguished. Limiting factors: if guest checkout is disabled the attack path is removed; the attacker must know a valid registered customer email; and the CVSS AC:H/AT:P reflect that the guest-order/token-matching sequence is a specific precondition rather than a trivial default-config request. No victim interaction or authentication is required.

Impact

All severity signals point the same direction on impact but diverge on likelihood. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (9.1) correctly captures a network-reachable (AV:N), unauthenticated (PR:N) flaw needing no user interaction (UI:N) that yields full account takeover (VC:H/VI:H), but it also honestly encodes friction via AC:H and AT:P - meaning the attack is non-trivial and depends on a specific precondition (guest checkout enabled), not a one-shot default-config exploit. No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The CVE is NOT in CISA KEV and no explicit POC/exploit-code flag was supplied, though a detailed third-party technical writeup (hackmd) and a VulnCheck advisory describe the mechanism, lowering the bar for a capable attacker to reproduce it. Net assessment: for an organization actually running Thirty bees with guest checkout enabled this is a genuine high priority (unauthenticated account takeover, patch available), but at internet scale the real-world risk is tempered by the product's small deployment footprint and the AC:H/AT:P precondition - treat the 9.1 as impact-accurate but likelihood-overstated for mass exploitation. No conflicting signals between the CVSS vector and the description were found; both agree on network, unauthenticated, conditional access.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker targeting a Thirty bees store with guest checkout enabled places a guest order using a known registered customer's email address, which generates a guest account carrying a secure_key. The attacker then supplies that guest secure key as the token to PasswordController::resolveCustomer(), which fails to distinguish guest from registered accounts, allowing the attacker to reset and seize the victim's registered account. No working exploit tool is confirmed in the input, but a public technical writeup detailing the method exists.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Account takeover of registered Thirty Bees customers is possible through an authentication bypass in PasswordController::resolveCustomer() affecting versions through 1.7.0. Unauthenticated remote attackers who know a victim's email and operate on a store with guest checkout enabled can place a guest order using that email, retrieve the resulting guest account's secure_key, and submit it as a password-reset token to reset the victim's password because the application does not distinguish guest from registered accounts. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the vendor has released an upstream fix commit (66410fd2a7ca9d1121a4b9551f59637ae6e4bcf1).

RemediationAI

Apply the upstream fix from commit 66410fd2a7ca9d1121a4b9551f59637ae6e4bcf1, which changes PasswordController::resolveCustomer() to instantiate the customer by ID and directly compare the secure_key, or upgrade to a Thirty Bees release that includes this commit (no tagged patched version has been independently confirmed). If immediate patching is not possible, disable guest checkout to remove the attack path, though this prevents legitimate guest purchases and may reduce conversion rates. As a detection measure, monitor password-reset requests for accounts that have recent guest orders using the same email address, and review logs for unusual password reset activity. The vendor advisory is at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/thirty-bees-through-1.7.0-account-takeover-via-passwordcontroller-guest-checkout and a technical write-up is available at https://hackmd.io/@leediay/SJc93G5ofl.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Thirty Bees is an open-source e-commerce platform (a fork of PrestaShop) that stores both registered and guest customer accounts in the same database table, each with a secure_key used for various authentication tokens. The vulnerability is an instance of CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key): PasswordController::resolveCustomer() (lines 182-200 in version 1.7.0) accepted a user-supplied token and an id_customer, queried the customer table for an email address where secure_key matched the token and id_customer matched the supplied ID, and then loaded the customer object by that email rather than by ID. Because guest accounts can be created with an arbitrary email-including a registered customer's email-an attacker can obtain a guest account's secure_key and id_customer, then supply those values along with the victim's email to cause the controller to load and reset the registered victim's account. The fix commit 66410fd2a7ca9d1121a4b9551f59637ae6e4bcf1 changes the logic to instantiate a Customer object directly by the supplied ID and verify that its secure_key equals the token, ensuring the token belongs to the same account being reset. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:thirty_bees:thirty_bees:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates all versions through 1.7.0 are potentially affected.

DescriptionCVE.org

Thirty bees through 1.7.0 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in PasswordController::resolveCustomer() that allows unauthenticated attackers to reset registered customers' passwords using guest account tokens. Attackers can place a guest order with the victim's email, then use the guest secure key to reset and take over the victim's account when guest checkout is enabled.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Thirty Bees e-commerce platform versions through 1.7.0 are affected by a critical authentication bypass that can result in takeover of registered customer accounts when guest checkout is enabled. This creates potential exposure of customer data and enables fraudulent account activity, which can damage customer trust and trigger regulatory or contractual obligations. Leadership should prioritize remediation because no public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the vendor has released an upstream fix commit and the flaw affects a core customer-facing function.
