Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the Zoraxy host to have a Path Exception rule configured for Basic Auth, ZorxAuth SSO, or CAPTCHA on a protected proxy endpoint - the handleBasicAuth path-exception matcher in mod/dynamicproxy/authProviders.go compares the request path against the exception PathPrefix as a raw string prefix rather than enforcing a path-segment boundary, so a protected URL that textually starts with an exempted prefix is wrongly treated as exempt. No attacker credentials or user interaction are needed (PR:N/UI:N), and the attack is remote over the network (AV:N). The limiting factor is configuration: deployments that do not define path exception rules for these auth providers are not exposed, so the flaw is config-dependent despite being unauthenticated.

Impact

Signals are moderate and internally consistent. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) with VC/VI/VA all Low yields a 6.9 (Medium) score, and the E:P exploit-maturity flag matches the input's 'POC publicly available' signal - a detailed technical write-up and exploit exist on GitHub (carfeii/oss). There is NO CISA KEV listing, so this is 'publicly available exploit code exists', NOT confirmed active exploitation; do not treat it as in-the-wild. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified here. The key nuance CVSS does not capture: although PR:N (unauthenticated) and AV:N are accurate, real-world exploitability depends on a specific deployment choice - the target must use Zoraxy's Path Exception rules for Basic Auth / ZorxAuth / CAPTCHA. Against Zoraxy hosts that do configure such exceptions, this is a genuine unauthenticated authorization bypass worth prompt patching; against hosts that do not use path exceptions, the raw-prefix matching flaw is not reachable. Net: a real, patchable priority for affected Zoraxy operators, but scoped by configuration and by the product's niche footprint rather than a broad internet-wide emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An operator fronts an internal application with Zoraxy and protects it with Basic Auth while exempting a public path (e.g. '/assets') via a Path Exception rule. Because the matcher compares a raw string prefix rather than a path-segment boundary, an unauthenticated attacker requests a protected URL that merely shares that prefix (e.g. '/assets-admin' or '/assetsecret') and Zoraxy treats it as exempt, serving the protected content without credentials. A public proof-of-concept and write-up for this exact path-exception bypass already exist.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

An improper authorization flaw in Zoraxy up to and including 3.3.4 lets remote, unauthenticated attackers bypass the Basic Auth, ZorxAuth SSO, and CAPTCHA protections that a reverse-proxy administrator has attached to a protected endpoint. The bypass only works on deployments that have configured a Path Exception rule for one of those auth providers: the exception matcher compares the incoming request path against the configured PathPrefix as a raw string prefix instead of enforcing a path-segment boundary, so any protected URL that textually begins with an exempted prefix is treated as exempt and served without authentication. Publicly available exploit code exists (no CISA KEV listing), the issue is reported via VulDB, and upgrading to 3.3.5-rc1 resolves it.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Zoraxy 3.3.5-rc1 (release tag v3.3.5-rc1) or a later 3.3.5-line build; the fix is carried by commit 37cd0f27b17cd15cfa4af409bfec943146f5fdfe in PR #1291, and the version string in the same change set moves from 3.3.4 to 3.3.5, so no stable GA 3.3.5 artifact beyond the release candidate is confirmed in the input data - note that running an RC in production carries its own stability risk and should be validated in staging first. If immediate upgrade is not possible, audit every Path Exception rule attached to Basic Auth, ZorxAuth, and CAPTCHA providers and remove or tighten those whose PathPrefix is a textual prefix of any path you actually intend to protect; the trade-off is that removing an exception rule causes the affected endpoint to require authentication for all requests, including legitimate static assets, and may break client flows - so re-add only as exact, segment-bounded paths. Do not rely on front-end filtering or WAF signature rules as a primary control here, since the bypass occurs inside Zoraxy's own authorization decision after the request is accepted. After upgrading, re-verify that protected endpoints rejecting requests lacking credentials cannot be reached via any sibling path sharing an exempted prefix, and consult the vendor advisory at https://vuldb.com/vuln/416690 for any updated guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Zoraxy is a Go-based reverse proxy and web server (written in Go with an embedded management UI) that provides dynamic proxy endpoints, access lists, Geo-IP filtering, and pluggable authentication providers - including HTTP Basic Auth, the ZorxAuth SSO login page, and CAPTCHA challenges. The vulnerable code lives in mod/dynamicproxy/authProviders.go, in the handleBasicAuth function's Path Exception Matcher logic. Under CWE-285 (Improper Authorization), the matcher evaluates whether a request should skip authentication by testing whether the request path begins with a configured exception PathPrefix using a raw string prefix comparison rather than a path-boundary-aware check (for example, matching only complete path segments and/or requiring a trailing '/'). This is a classic path-prefix confusion: an exception configured for a public prefix such as '/assets' or '/public' also exempts sibling paths such as '/assets-private' or '/public-admin', because the protected URL textually starts with the exempted string. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:tobychui:zoraxy:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* maps the affected surface to Zoraxy releases up to and including 3.3.4; the upstream patch (commit 37cd0f27b17cd15cfa4af409bfec943146f5fdfe, PR #1291) is part of the 3.3.5 development line, and the vulnerability class is consistent with the 'Authentication Bypass' tag assigned by the reporting sources. The assessed CVSS:3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L reflects that exploitation is remote and requires no credentials or user interaction, but yields only partial confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact per request and is gated by the presence of path exception rules.

DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw has been found in tobychui zoraxy up to 3.3.4. This impacts the function handleBasicAuth of the file mod/dynamicproxy/authProviders.go of the component Path Exception Matcher. This manipulation of the argument PathPrefix causes improper authorization. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The exploit has been published and may be used. Upgrading to version 3.3.5-rc1 will fix this issue. Patch name: 37cd0f27b17cd15cfa4af409bfec943146f5fdfe. Upgrading the affected component is advised.
