MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker must control the SMTP server referenced by a Gophish sending profile, or be positioned to intercept/MITM the SMTP connection, so that a malicious server error string is returned to Gophish. Exploitation then requires a privileged administrator to view campaign results or trigger a test email (passive user interaction, UI:P). Limiting factors: the attacker needs a pre-existing position of control over or interception of the sending profile's SMTP endpoint (a non-default, attacker-favorable precondition captured as AT:P), and the payload only fires when an admin interacts; impact is limited to the admin browser session (API key theft), with no direct confidentiality/integrity/availability impact on the Gophish host itself. |
| Impact | This is a low-priority issue despite a publicly available exploit. The official CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L) scores only 2.3, and the signals are internally consistent: the AT:P (attack requirement present) and UI:P (passive user interaction) metrics reflect that an attacker must first control or MITM a sending-profile SMTP server AND wait for an administrator to view campaign results or send a test email. There is NO vulnerable-system impact (VC/VI/VA all N) - impact is confined to the subsequent system (SC:L/SI:L), i.e. the admin's browser session, with the practical payoff being theft of Gophish API keys. POC code exists (Ostorlab blog, VulnCheck advisory), but this is NOT in CISA KEV and there is no evidence of active exploitation - POC availability and active exploitation are distinct signals and only the former is present. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be factored in. The high precondition burden (attacker must already control the SMTP endpoint used by a sending profile, plus a privileged admin must interact) sharply limits real-world risk even though the attack vector is nominally network-based. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who controls, or can intercept traffic to, the SMTP server configured in a Gophish sending profile returns a crafted SMTP error message containing a script payload. When a Gophish administrator later views the campaign results page or sends a test email, the unescaped error message renders and the script executes in the admin's authenticated browser session, exfiltrating the Gophish API key. Public POC/exploit material is available via the Ostorlab and VulnCheck write-ups. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Stored and reflected cross-site scripting in Gophish through 0.12.1 allows an attacker who controls or intercepts the SMTP server configured in a sending profile to inject JavaScript that runs in an administrator's browser when campaign results are viewed or a test email is sent, enabling theft of the administrator's API key. Exploitation is unauthenticated from the attacker's perspective (PR:N) but requires a significant precondition: control over, or man-in-the-middle interception of, the sending profile's SMTP endpoint, plus passive interaction by a privileged administrator; the independent assessment rates this as a low-priority issue with a CVSS:3.1 score reflecting high attack complexity (AC:H), required user interaction (UI:R), and scope change (S:C) with only low confidentiality and integrity impact. Publicly available exploit code exists, but there is no indication of confirmed active exploitation (no CISA KEV listing).
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis: the GitHub references supplied are pointers to the vulnerable source lines rather than a fixed release or pull request, and no patched version is named, so organizations should treat all Gophish builds up to and including 0.12.1 as affected and monitor the upstream repository and the VulnCheck advisory for a fixed release. Because the injection is driven by SMTP server error text, the most effective compensating control is to treat SMTP infrastructure as untrusted: only configure sending profiles that point at SMTP servers you own or fully trust, enforce TLS with certificate validation (and preferably certificate pinning) so an on-path attacker cannot substitute a malicious error response, and restrict outbound SMTP traffic to approved hosts and ports (25/465/587) to make interception harder - at the cost of breaking legitimately external or third-party SMTP relays. Self-hosted operators can patch the two front-end scripts by HTML-escaping or text-encoding the server error string before it is inserted into the DOM in campaign_results.js and campaigns.js, which removes the injection without changing server behavior. Additional hardening with limited side effects includes placing the Gophish admin UI behind a VPN or management network, accessing it only from a dedicated browser profile or isolated workstation, adding a restrictive Content-Security-Policy that disallows inline and third-party script, and avoiding the test-email feature against untrusted SMTP endpoints; since successful exploitation yields API key theft, rotate Gophish API keys and administrator sessions regularly and audit for unexpected API activity. Note that a public proof-of-concept exists (see the OstorLab blog reference), so these mitigations should be applied promptly even though the overall risk is assessed as low.

The issue is a classic CWE-79 improper neutralization of input during web page generation, appearing here in two flavors: stored XSS when a malicious SMTP server error string is persisted and later rendered in campaign results, and reflected XSS when the error is returned immediately during a test-email send. Gophish is a Go-based phishing-simulation framework whose sending profiles store SMTP host, credentials, and TLS settings. When a send fails, the SMTP server's error text is passed back to the front end and inserted into the DOM; the referenced vulnerable code is in static/js/src/app/campaign_results.js (around lines 422-427) and static/js/src/app/campaigns.js (around lines 110-113), where the server-supplied message is written into the page without HTML escaping. Because the payload originates from the SMTP response rather than from a Gophish user, the injection point is external and attacker-influenceable whenever the configured SMTP server is hostile or the connection is intercepted. The assessed vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) confirms the attack is network-reachable, unauthenticated on the attacker side, and requires administrator interaction, with impact scoped to the admin's browser session (API key theft) rather than the Gophish host itself.

Controlling or intercepting the SMTP server is a meaningful precondition (AC:H), no target privileges are needed (PR:N) but an admin must view the page (UI:R), and the XSS executes in the admin's browser (S:C) with limited C/I and no availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
Gophish through 0.12.1 contains stored and reflected cross-site scripting vulnerabilities that allow attackers to inject script by returning malicious SMTP server error messages. Attackers controlling or intercepting a sending profile's SMTP server can execute script when administrators view campaign results or send test emails, stealing API keys.
