Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to be socially engineered into installing a crafted, attacker-controlled Chrome extension; the flaw is the missing authorization check in Chrome's SignIn component that the installed extension then abuses to read sensitive information. Limiting factors: this is not a drive-by - it depends on active user interaction (UI:R) to install an untrusted extension, meaning users who only install extensions from trusted sources are not realistically exposed. No special server-side or non-default browser configuration is required beyond the presence of the malicious extension, and impact is limited to information disclosure (no integrity or availability effect). Affects Chrome versions prior to 155.0.8059.39.

Impact

This is a moderate-but-not-urgent issue despite the 6.5 CVSS score. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) indicates a network-reachable, unauthenticated, low-complexity confidentiality-only flaw, but the headline risk is heavily tempered by two factors the vector only partially captures: Google/Chromium rated the security severity 'Low', and the description makes clear that exploitation requires BOTH user interaction (UI:R) AND social engineering to get a victim to install a crafted Chrome extension. That precondition conflicts with the C:H impact rating - a missing-authorization info-leak gated behind attacker-controlled extension installation is realistically closer to low/medium impact, which is why I down-rate confidentiality in my independent assessment. On the exploitation-signal side there is no CISA KEV listing, no public POC identified, and no EPSS score was provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active or at-scale exploitation. SSVC-style reading: exploitation=none observed, automatable=no (requires per-victim social engineering and manual extension install), technical impact=partial (information disclosure only, no integrity/availability). Net: a real but low-priority bug that is already patched; prioritize via normal Chrome auto-update rather than emergency response. Note the missing EPSS data limits precision on exploitation likelihood.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker publishes or distributes a specially crafted Chrome extension and uses social engineering (phishing, fake tooling, or a deceptive listing) to convince a victim to install it. Once installed, the extension abuses the missing authorization check in Chrome's SignIn component to read sensitive information it should not have access to. No public exploit code has been identified, and successful attack depends entirely on the victim installing the malicious extension.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026

Google Chrome versions before 155.0.8059.39 contain a missing authorization check in the browser's SignIn component that a crafted, attacker-supplied Chrome extension can abuse to read sensitive sign-in information, making this primarily an information-disclosure issue rather than a full system compromise. Exploitation is not drive-by: it requires the victim to be socially engineered into installing the malicious extension (UI:R), and the attacker needs no prior privileges or credentials on the target (PR:N). No public exploit code or evidence of active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and while the published CVSS score is 6.5, the independent assessment rates the realistic confidentiality impact as low, making this a moderate-but-not-urgent issue; unauthenticated remote attackers are the relevant threat model, but only where a user can be convinced to install an untrusted extension.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Google Chrome 155.0.8059.39 or later; this is the vendor-released fixed version and the primary remedy. Chrome normally auto-updates, so verify the installed build via chrome://settings/help and restart the browser if an update is pending; managed fleets should push 155.0.8059.39 or newer through their patching pipeline. Because the defect is in the browser rather than in the extension alone, simply removing a malicious extension without updating leaves the underlying missing authorization check in place. Until the update is deployed, reduce exposure by restricting extension installation through enterprise policy - for example ExtensionInstallBlocklist or ExtensionInstallAllowlist to permit only vetted extensions, or disabling developer-mode sideloading - with the trade-off that overly strict allowlists break legitimate internal extensions and require ongoing administration. User education to avoid installing extensions from untrusted sources addresses the social-engineering prerequisite but is a soft control that should not be relied on alone. Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is classified under CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) and resides in Chrome's SignIn subsystem, the code path responsible for the browser's Google account sign-in flows and the associated credential and session state. Chrome's extension platform normally enforces permission and origin boundaries so that an extension cannot reach sign-in internals without explicitly user-granted privileges; here an authorization check that should gate access to sensitive sign-in data is absent, so an installed malicious extension can retrieve information it should not be able to reach. Because the extension runs inside the browser and the missing check lives in Chrome itself, the crafted extension is the delivery mechanism rather than the root cause. Chromium's own security severity rating for this issue is Low, consistent with an information-disclosure-only impact that has no integrity or availability effect, and the independent assessment likewise caps confidentiality at low rather than the high value in the published vector. Affected software maps to CPE cpe:2.3:a:google:chrome:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with the fixed build being 155.0.8059.39; the attack vector is network-based (AV:N), low complexity (AC:L), no privileges required (PR:N), but requires user interaction (UI:R), so it does not fit the drive-by model. EUVD entry EUVD-2026-93595 tracks the same issue.
