2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires a WordPress Multisite installation with public user registration enabled - on such sites an unauthenticated attacker can self-register with a crafted email address. The specific mechanism is that WordPress accepts email addresses containing numeric HTML character references while Post SMTP's stricter validator rejects them, so the send fails and the raw attacker-supplied address is persisted verbatim into the email log via the failed-send exception message. Execution additionally requires that an administrator (or other user) subsequently views the affected email-log page in wp-admin, where the payload is rendered without sufficient output escaping. Limiting factors: Multisite plus open registration is non-default and uncommon; on standard single-site installs the unauthenticated path described does not apply; and the payload is inert until the log page is viewed. Affected versions are all releases up to and including 4.0.1; upgrading to 4.0.2 remediates.

Impact

Signals are mixed and point to a conditional, not broadly urgent, risk. The vendor CVSS of 7.2 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) treats this as a network-reachable, unauthenticated, no-interaction stored XSS with scope change - which on its face reads as high priority. However, the description materially qualifies the PR:N: truly unauthenticated exploitation is only possible on WordPress Multisite installations with public user registration enabled, which is a non-default and relatively uncommon deployment, so the effective attack surface is far narrower than the vector alone suggests. No KEV listing and no public POC were provided, and no EPSS score is present in the input, so there is no evidence of active or probable near-term exploitation - status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Note also a tension with the UI:N metric: while injection is unauthenticated, the stored payload only executes when an administrator later opens the Post SMTP email log in wp-admin, which is arguably a form of victim interaction even though Wordfence scored it UI:N. Net: a legitimately high-CVSS flaw that is a moderate real-world priority - meaningful on open Multisite portals, low exposure on the typical single-site default install. Patch (4.0.2) availability is the decisive mitigating factor.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a WordPress Multisite with open public registration, an attacker registers using an email address containing numeric HTML character references that WordPress accepts but Post SMTP's stricter validator rejects, triggering a failed-send exception that writes the raw, attacker-controlled address into the plugin's email log. When a site administrator later opens the email log in wp-admin, the unescaped script executes in their authenticated browser session. No public proof-of-concept exploit was identified in the provided data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the WordPress plugin Post SMTP (Complete Email Deliverability and SMTP Solution) affects all versions up to and including 4.0.1, allowing an unauthenticated attacker to persist arbitrary script content through the 'user_email' parameter. Exploitation is conditional: it requires a WordPress Multisite installation with public user registration enabled, where WordPress accepts email addresses containing numeric HTML character references that Post SMTP's stricter validator rejects, causing the send to fail and the raw attacker-controlled address to be written verbatim into the email log via the failed-send exception message; the payload then executes when an administrator views the affected email-log page. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and the risk is best characterized as conditional rather than broadly urgent because the prerequisite Multisite-plus-open-registration configuration is non-default and the payload is inert until an admin opens the log view. Upgrading to 4.0.2 remediates the issue.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade the Post SMTP plugin to version 4.0.2 or later, which is the first release containing the fix per the plugin's trac changeset for tag 4.0.2. Because the plugin is distributed through the WordPress.org repository, the update can be applied from the WordPress admin Plugins screen or via WP-CLI (wp plugin update post-smtp), and the remediation should be validated by confirming the installed version reports 4.0.2 or higher. Where patching must be deferred, the most effective compensating control is to disable public user registration on WordPress Multisite - the unauthenticated injection path depends on an attacker self-registering with a crafted email address, so turning off open registration (Settings > General in network admin) removes the prerequisite entirely, at the cost of blocking legitimate self-service signup. If registration must remain open, restrict it to trusted domains or gate it behind invitation/approval, and additionally consider temporarily disabling Post SMTP's email logging or limiting access to the plugin's email-log admin page to a small set of trusted administrators, since the stored payload only executes when that log view is rendered. Any already-stored malicious entries should be purged from the plugin's email log table after upgrading, as upgrading fixes the escaping but does not remove previously persisted records. Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic CWE-79 improper neutralization of input during web page generation, manifesting as stored (persistent) XSS inside the WordPress plugin Post SMTP. The vulnerable data path begins with the plugin's email address validation class (referenced in the 3.9.5 source at Postman/Postman-Mail/PostmanEmailAddress.php), which applies stricter parsing than WordPress core; core accepts email addresses containing numeric HTML character references while the plugin's validator rejects them. When WordPress itself dispatches mail (for example during Multisite self-registration) the plugin's send attempt fails, and the failure handling in PostmanEmailLogService/PostmanEmailLogs persists the exception message - including the attacker-supplied address verbatim - into the plugin's database-backed email log. The log is later rendered in the wp-admin email-log interface, where the corresponding JavaScript (postman-email-logs.js) and log-rendering code (PostmanEmailLogs.php, PostmanWpMail.php) do not sufficiently escape output, so the injected markup is interpreted by the browser in the administrator's session context. The CVSS:3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N confirms the unauthenticated (PR:N) network-reachable nature of the injection step and the changed scope, while the low confidentiality and integrity impacts reflect the typical consequences of script execution in an admin session - session or token theft, arbitrary actions in wp-admin, and content manipulation rather than direct server compromise. The CPE string identifies the affected package as saadiqbal:post_smtp_-_complete_email_delivery_and_smtp_solution_with_email_logs,_alerts,_backup_smtp_&_mobile_app, i.e. the Post SMTP plugin distribution on the WordPress.org plugin repository.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Post SMTP - Complete Email Deliverability and SMTP Solution with Email Logs, Alerts, Backup SMTP & Mobile App plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'user_email' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.0.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is exploitable without authentication on WordPress Multisite installations with public registration enabled, as WordPress accepts email addresses containing numeric HTML character references that Post SMTP's stricter validator rejects, persisting the attacker-controlled address verbatim to the email log via the failed-send exception message.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Post SMTP, a widely deployed WordPress email delivery plugin, contains a stored cross-site scripting flaw affecting all versions up to and including 4.0.1 that can plant attacker-controlled script inside the plugin's email log and execute it in the browser of an administrator who reviews that log. Exposure is confined to organizations running WordPress Multisite with public user registration enabled, so most single-site deployments are not at risk, but any site matching that profile should treat administrator sessions and the email log as untrusted until remediation arrives. Leadership should care because the attack targets privileged administrator browsers, creating a path to full site takeover, credential theft, and downstream damage to customer data and brand trust.

Business Impact: Medium
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable public user registration on WordPress Multisite networks, deactivate or remove Post SMTP until a fixed version is available, restrict and monitor administrator access to the email log page, strip or reject numeric HTML character references in the user_email parameter, and apply WAF rules that block script payloads in registration and email-related requests.
