MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to hold an authenticated account that is already a member of the target Plane project at any role, including the lowest GUEST role (consistent with CVSS PR:L). The specific prerequisite is access to the ProjectMemberViewSet.partial_update endpoint with a project membership; the attacker then supplies a 'role' value for another member. The key LIMITING factors are: (1) the attacker must be an existing project member, so this is not exploitable by anonymous outsiders; (2) the pre-1.3.0 check only failed to block assigning a role LOWER THAN OR EQUAL to the requester's own role - assigning a HIGHER role was already blocked, so the impact is demotion/denial-of-control rather than the attacker elevating themselves to admin. Affects all versions prior to 1.3.0 in default configuration; no special feature flag or non-default setting is needed. |
| Impact | This is a credible, moderately serious authorization flaw (CWE-269, improper privilege management) rather than a high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk issue, though not an emergency. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H, base 8.1) is internally consistent with the description: the attack is network-reachable, low-complexity, and requires only low privileges (PR:L) - specifically any authenticated project member, including the lowest GUEST role. Confidentiality is correctly rated N because the flaw exposes no data; the high Integrity and Availability impact reflects an attacker tampering with the authorization model and denying legitimate admins control of the project. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or SSVC decision data was provided, and no public exploit was supplied in the intelligence, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The practical risk is bounded by the fact that the attacker must already be a member of the target project - this is a trusted-insider / post-compromise privilege-manipulation issue, not a path for an anonymous outsider to take over an instance. The source-code diff from PR #8833 confirms the root cause and fix, which raises confidence in the technical description. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user who has been invited to a Plane project as a Guest (the lowest role) sends a crafted partial_update request to the ProjectMemberViewSet endpoint targeting another member. Because the authorization check only blocked assigning a role HIGHER than the requester's, the Guest can assign a lower-or-equal role to Administrators and Members, demoting them and stripping their control of the project. No public proof-of-concept was provided, but the fixing commit (587fe76) and PR diff make the exact flawed code path and the trivial exploitation evident. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026
Authenticated members of a Plane project - including users holding only the lowest GUEST role - can demote project Administrators and Members through the ProjectMemberViewSet.partial_update endpoint, stripping them of project control. The pre-1.3.0 authorization check only blocked assigning a role higher than the requester's own, so it silently allowed assigning a lower or equal role; the attacker cannot elevate themselves, but can degrade other members' access. The issue is fixed in Plane 1.3.0, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis (CVSS 8.1, EPSS not provided).
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Plane 1.3.0 or later, which contains the corrected authorization logic (vendor-released patch: v1.3.0; see https://github.com/makeplane/plane/releases/tag/v1.3.0, PR https://github.com/makeplane/plane/pull/8833, commit https://github.com/makeplane/plane/commit/587fe76032fb69275866fdeb655699a70a83c521, and advisory https://github.com/makeplane/plane/security/advisories/GHSA-494h-3rcq-5g3c). Because exploitation requires only existing project membership at any role including GUEST, the most effective compensating control until patching is to audit and tighten project membership - remove or downgrade untrusted GUEST accounts from sensitive projects, since any such account can perform the demotion. Note the trade-off that this restricts legitimate guest collaboration. Additionally, monitor and alert on PATCH requests to the project member endpoint that change the role field, and be prepared to have workspace administrators restore demoted members' roles, since the fix prevents but does not remediate prior unauthorized demotions. No vendor workaround short of upgrading is documented, and disabling the member-update endpoint at the reverse proxy would break legitimate role administration.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Plane's REST API is built on Django REST Framework (apps/api/plane/app/views/project/member.py), and it implements role-based access control using numeric role constants (e.g. ROLE.ADMIN.value, with 5 denoting a guest workspace role and 15/20 denoting elevated project roles). The vulnerable partial_update method applied only a one-directional comparison - rejecting a requested role greater than the requester's own role - which left the inverse case (a role lower than or equal to the requester's) unchecked. This is a classic CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management) flaw: the authorization logic verified one boundary of the privilege comparison but not the other, so a low-privileged project member could mutate the role field of a higher-privileged member. The upstream fix (PR 8833, commit 587fe76032fb69275866fdeb655699a70a83c521) restructures the checks to require that only Admins (or workspace admins) modify roles, that a requester cannot modify a member whose role is equal to or higher than their own, and that a requester cannot assign a role equal to or higher than their own.

Plane is an open-source project management tool. Prior to 1.3.0, the ProjectMemberViewSet.partial_update method allows any project member, including a user with the lowest GUEST role, to modify another project member's role. The authorization check prevents assigning a role higher than the requester's role but does not prevent assigning a lower or equal role, allowing a Guest to demote Administrators and Members and deny them project control. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.3.0.
Technical POC Analysis
Improper Privilege Management (CWE-269), implemented as a broken access-control check.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
Plane versions prior to 1.3.0 contain an authorization flaw that allows even low-privilege project members to demote project Administrators and Members, potentially disrupting project governance and delivery. This affects any organization using affected Plane deployments for collaboration, creating insider risk and operational delays. Although no public exploit identified at time of analysis, the high severity and ease of misuse warrant urgent remediation.
