| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated Plane account with any workspace role (ADMIN, MEMBER, or GUEST) on the target instance - the attacker does NOT need to be a member of the victim workspace. The specific vulnerable surfaces are DuplicateAssetEndpoint (source FileAsset fetched without workspace scoping), WorkspaceFileAssetEndpoint and the legacy FileAssetEndpoint (missing workspace authorization on read/create/modify/delete), and WorkspaceViewViewSet.retrieve (missing the authorization decorator its sibling actions use). The principal limiting factor is that valid authentication is required (no anonymous access), so the realistic threat model is a multi-workspace deployment with multiple tenants/users who should be isolated from one another; a single-workspace single-tenant instance has little exposure. Affected versions are all releases prior to 1.4.0 (cpe:2.3:a:makeplane:plane). |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue for organizations running self-hosted Plane, though the signals are a mix of confirmed and absent. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N, base 8.5) is internally consistent with the description: a network-reachable, low-complexity flaw requiring only a low-privilege authenticated account (any workspace member), no user interaction, and a changed scope because the authorization boundary crossed is the workspace tenant boundary - exactly the cross-tenant IDOR pattern of CWE-639. No EPSS probability was provided, so widespread-exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified. The vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV and no exploit POC was supplied; the GitHub PR diff in the input is the vendor FIX, not weaponized exploit code, so it must not be conflated with active exploitation. The practical risk driver is that exploitation needs only a valid authenticated account on the instance, and multi-tenant/multi-workspace SaaS-style deployments are precisely where this becomes damaging - any member of one workspace can reach assets in workspaces they do not belong to. One point to verify: the description says attackers can 'read, create, modify, or delete assets' cross-workspace, which implies integrity impact arguably higher than the I:L in the published vector - treat the modify/delete capability as a meaningful integrity exposure, not merely low. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated user holding even a guest/member seat in one Plane workspace calls the DuplicateAssetEndpoint or the legacy/WorkspaceFileAssetEndpoint with an asset identifier belonging to a different workspace, and because the backend omits a workspace-membership check, the request succeeds. The attacker can thereby exfiltrate confidential files from unrelated tenants or tamper with/delete their assets, and separately read workspace-view data via WorkspaceViewViewSet.retrieve. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the fix commit reveals the exact missing authorization checks, lowering the bar to reproduce. |

Cross-workspace authorization bypass in Plane (makeplane) releases prior to 1.4.0 lets any authenticated user read, duplicate, modify, or delete file assets and read workspace-view data belonging to workspaces they are not members of. The vulnerable surfaces are DuplicateAssetEndpoint (source FileAsset fetched without workspace scoping), WorkspaceFileAssetEndpoint and the legacy FileAssetEndpoint (missing workspace authorization on read/create/update/delete), and WorkspaceViewViewSet.retrieve (missing the authorization decorator its sibling actions apply). Exploitation requires a valid authenticated account but not membership in the victim workspace, so multi-tenant, multi-workspace self-hosted deployments carry the most exposure; no public exploit code has been identified and there is no KEV confirmation of active exploitation. The issue is fixed in version 1.4.0.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Plane 1.4.0, which adds workspace-level @allow_permission decorators to WorkspaceFileAssetEndpoint and the legacy FileAssetEndpoint and scopes the DuplicateAssetEndpoint source-asset lookup to the caller's workspaces (see https://github.com/makeplane/plane/releases/tag/v1.4.0 and advisory GHSA-p57q-8hh8-7fc7; code changes in https://github.com/makeplane/plane/pull/8885, https://github.com/makeplane/plane/pull/9288, and commits 4577dc3f7a6b5a198602b602a45c6b0abdc7204b / ac11c3ef7939e31201fa92a17de106906025590f). Where immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls are limited because the defect is in object-level authorization rather than a configurable feature: the most effective interim measure is to block the asset and workspace-view API routes (for example /api/assets/, the v2 asset endpoints, and the workspace view retrieve route) at the reverse proxy or API gateway for all non-administrative callers, accepting the trade-off that legitimate file attachment and view functionality will be unavailable; alternatively, temporarily restrict account provisioning so that only users trusted across all workspaces on the instance can authenticate, which preserves functionality but does not scale to genuinely isolated tenants. Deployments that host only a single workspace with a single trusted user group have minimal practical exposure, whereas multi-tenant self-hosted instances should prioritize upgrading. No patch bypass, data-migration step, or credential rotation is indicated by the vendor advisory.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key): several Django REST Framework views in Plane's API layer resolve objects by caller-supplied identifiers (asset IDs, workspace slugs) without verifying that the requesting user has a membership relationship with the object's owning workspace. In the DuplicateAssetEndpoint code path, FileAsset.objects.filter(id=asset_id, is_uploaded=True) is used to fetch the source asset, so an attacker who supplies an asset ID from another workspace causes a cross-workspace duplicate; the fix instead precomputes the caller's workspace IDs via WorkspaceMember.objects.filter(member=request.user, is_active=True) and adds workspace_id__in=user_workspace_ids to the lookup. For WorkspaceFileAssetEndpoint and the legacy FileAssetEndpoint, the fix adds the @allow_permission([ROLE.ADMIN, ROLE.MEMBER, ROLE.GUEST], level="WORKSPACE") decorator to the POST, PATCH, and DELETE handlers, which is the same workspace-level gate applied elsewhere in the codebase. WorkspaceViewViewSet.retrieve lacks that decorator entirely while its sibling actions include it, creating an unauthorized read surface for workspace view records. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:makeplane:plane:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all releases before 1.4.0, and the flaw is reachable over the network (AV:N, AC:L) by an authenticated user (PR:L) with low privilege.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Plane is an open-source project management tool. Prior to 1.4.0, DuplicateAssetEndpoint fetches a source FileAsset without limiting it to the caller's workspace, allowing cross-workspace asset duplication. WorkspaceFileAssetEndpoint and the legacy FileAssetEndpoint omit workspace authorization, allowing authenticated users to read, create, modify, or delete assets in workspaces where they are not members. Separately, WorkspaceViewViewSet.retrieve lacks the authorization decorator used by its sibling actions, exposing an unauthorized workspace-view read surface. This issue is fixed in 1.4.0.
Technical POC Analysis
CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key / IDOR) mapped to the CVE; the advisory also files CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) for the three undecorated surfaces.

Executive ViewAI
Plane, the open-source project and workspace collaboration platform, contains a cross-workspace authorization bypass (CVE-2026-104971, CVSS 8.5) that lets a user holding a valid account on a self-hosted instance read, duplicate, modify, or delete file attachments and read workspace-view data belonging to workspaces they were never granted membership in. The flaw affects Plane releases prior to 1.4.0, and the exposure is greatest for organizations that run Plane as a shared, multi-tenant service or host multiple business units, clients, or partners in one deployment, because workspace separation - the control those tenants are contractually relying on - can be bypassed. No public exploit code has been identified and there is no KEV confirmation of active exploitation, but the affected surfaces include ordinary read, create, update, and delete operations on other teams' assets, so the integrity and confidentiality impact on hosted data is material.
Vendor-released patch: 1.4.0 (upgrade all instances to Plane 1.4.0 or later); the vulnerability record metadata lists patch status as not available, so confirm the 1.4.0 fix against the vendor advisory. Until every instance is upgraded, interim mitigations include restricting Plane to a single trusted workspace, disabling self-registration and external guest invitations, limiting account creation to vetted internal users, placing the instance behind network-level access controls or a VPN, and monitoring access logs on the DuplicateAssetEndpoint, WorkspaceFileAssetEndpoint, FileAssetEndpoint, and WorkspaceViewViewSet.retrieve surfaces for access by non-members of the owning workspace.
