Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated OpenAM account that has been granted the iplanet-am-session-destroy-sessions attribute (a delegated-administrator privilege), plus a multi-realm deployment where the attacker's realm differs from the victims' realm. The attacker must also be able to supply a valid target session identifier or handle. Exploitation is LIMITED by this PR:H prerequisite - it is not reachable by unauthenticated users or by ordinary authenticated end users; single-realm deployments and installations that do not delegate the session-destroy privilege are not meaningfully exposed. Impact is restricted to forced logout (availability of user sessions); no confidentiality or integrity impact is indicated.

Impact

This is a moderate-priority authorization flaw, not an urgent fire-drill. The reporter-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N, VA:H only) correctly frames it as a network-reachable but high-privilege issue with availability-only impact: the attacker is an already-authenticated delegated administrator who holds the iplanet-am-session-destroy-sessions attribute, so this is privilege misuse across a trust boundary (CWE-285), not remote unauthenticated compromise. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit was supplied in the intelligence, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - no EPSS score was provided to corroborate likelihood. The realm-scoping defect is real and verifiable from the vendor GHSA advisory, but real-world risk is bounded by the PR:H prerequisite: an organization is only exposed to the extent that it issues the session-destroy attribute to semi-trusted or compromised delegated admins. No signals conflict; the main gap is the absence of EPSS/KEV/POC data, which is consistent with a recently disclosed, privilege-gated bug rather than a contradiction.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A delegated administrator (or an attacker who has compromised such an account) in one realm of a multi-realm OpenAM deployment supplies a session identifier or handle belonging to users in a different realm and invokes the session-destroy operation. Because the server evaluates realm permission against the requester's own realm rather than the target's, the request succeeds and forcibly logs out arbitrary users across the entire instance. No public proof-of-concept was provided in the intelligence.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 03, 2026

Authenticated delegated administrators in OpenIdentityPlatform OpenAM deployments prior to 16.1.3 can forcibly terminate user sessions belonging to realms outside their own authority. The flaw is a realm-scoping error in the session-destroy authorization check: because the check is evaluated against the requester's realm rather than the realm owning the target session, any account granted the iplanet-am-session-destroy-sessions attribute can submit an arbitrary session identifier or handle and log out users in other realms. Impact is limited to availability of user sessions (no confidentiality or integrity effect), and exploitation requires a high-privilege authenticated account plus a multi-realm, privilege-delegating configuration; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and EPSS scoring was not provided.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to OpenAM 16.1.3 or later, the vendor-released fix that corrects the realm-scoping check in the delegated session-destroy path; see the vendor advisory at https://github.com/OpenIdentityPlatform/OpenAM/security/advisories/GHSA-hmwh-9r8r-44gw for the official guidance. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to audit and revoke the iplanet-am-session-destroy-sessions attribute from delegated administrators in multi-realm environments, or to stop delegating session-destruction rights altogether - the trade-off being that global or realm-level session administration must then be performed by a smaller set of fully trusted operators. Splitting OpenAM into single-realm instances also removes the cross-realm exposure but significantly increases operational overhead. Because exploitation requires a valid target session identifier or handle, absent those identifiers the attack is not feasible; however, such handles may be obtainable through logs or other administrative views, so restricting who can read session data adds defense in depth. Finally, monitor for unusual bursts of session termination events crossing realm boundaries, which would indicate abuse of a still-privileged delegated account. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, so remediation can be scheduled as moderate-priority maintenance rather than emergency response.

Technical ContextAI · show details

OpenAM is an open-source access management and single sign-on platform (CPE cpe:2.3:a:openidentityplatform:openam:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*). Its administrative model supports realms - logical tenants with independent user stores and policy - and delegated administrators whose privileges are scoped to a specific realm. The session-destroy operation is gated by a privilege attribute, iplanet-am-session-destroy-sessions, which should confine the caller to sessions within the realms they administer. The root cause maps to CWE-285 (Improper Authorization): the authorization routine validates the realm context of the requester instead of the realm context of the session named in the request, so the realm boundary is never enforced against the target object. This is an object-scope/authorization-context confusion rather than a memory-safety or injection issue, meaning exploitation depends entirely on the attacker already holding the delegated privilege and being able to reference a valid session identifier or handle from a victim realm.

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenAM before 16.1.3 contains an improper authorization vulnerability that allows delegated administrators to destroy sessions outside their realms because realm checks use the requester's realm. Authenticated accounts holding the iplanet-am-session-destroy-sessions attribute can supply a target session identifier or handle to forcibly log out users in any realm.
