Exploitation Conditions

Requires the non-default cookieHashRedirectEnabled load-balancer cookie setting to be active, making the SAML cookie bounce auto-submit page reachable; the attacker must supply a crafted SAML message, relay state, or target URL whose unencoded content reaches that page. Exploitation further requires active victim interaction (CVSS UI:A) to load the attacker-influenced page in their browser. A critical LIMITING factor is that released versions before 16.1.3 abort with an unrelated HTTP 500 error that prevents the payload from executing, so default released builds are not practically exploitable; impact, when triggered, is limited to the browser/OpenAM origin (client-side script), not server compromise.

Impact

This is a medium-severity (CVSS 4.0 base 5.1) reflected cross-site scripting issue in OpenAM's SAML load-balancer cookie bounce auto-submit page (CWE-79), reported by VulnCheck. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:A) indicates a network-reachable flaw with no privileges but requiring active user interaction, and the impact is confined to subsequent-system confidentiality/integrity (SC:L/SI:L) with no vulnerable-system impact (VC/VI/VA:N) - consistent with script execution in the OpenAM browser origin rather than server compromise. The single most important mitigating signal is in the description itself: this is a LATENT defect - an unrelated HTTP 500 failure prevents exploitation in released versions, and it is only reachable when the non-default cookieHashRedirectEnabled setting is used. No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified; there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Net assessment: despite a network/unauthenticated CVSS vector, real-world risk is LOW - exploitation is blocked in shipped builds, gated behind a non-default configuration, and requires victim interaction. One conflict worth noting: the input CVSS uses AC:L, but the dependence on a non-default config plus a blocking 500 error argues for higher attack complexity than AC:L implies.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

In a deployment with cookieHashRedirectEnabled, an attacker crafts a SAML request whose message, relay state, or target URL carries unencoded markup, then lures an authenticated user's browser to the load-balancer cookie bounce auto-submit page, where the payload would render and execute script in the OpenAM origin (e.g., to steal session context). No public exploit code is identified, and in released versions an unrelated HTTP 500 error reportedly aborts the flow, so a working attack would require a build or configuration where that failure does not occur.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 03, 2026

Reflected cross-site scripting in the SAML load-balancer cookie bounce auto-submit page of OpenIdentityPlatform OpenAM allows crafted SAML message, RelayState, or target URL values to execute attacker-controlled script in the OpenAM origin for any user who loads the resulting page (CVSS 4.0 base 5.1; independently assessed as CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N). Two prerequisites sharply limit real-world exposure: the page is only reachable when the non-default cookieHashRedirectEnabled load-balancer setting is enabled, and in all released versions of OpenAM before 16.1.3 an unrelated HTTP 500 failure aborts the request before the injected payload can run, making the defect latent in shipped builds. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the issue requires unauthenticated remote delivery of crafted input plus a victim actively loading the page. Fixed in OpenAM 16.1.3.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to OpenAM 16.1.3 or later, which is the vendor-released patch that fixes the unencoded insertion in the load-balancer cookie bounce auto-submit page (see https://github.com/OpenIdentityPlatform/OpenAM/security/advisories/GHSA-v796-mg6j-9c5m). Because reachability depends on the load-balancer cookie-hash redirect feature, the most direct compensating control is to keep cookieHashRedirectEnabled disabled (the default) and configure the load balancer for conventional sticky sessions instead; the trade-off is that you must adjust LB session-affinity rules to avoid SAML POST/redirect failures that the cookie-bounce page was designed to work around. If the feature must stay enabled and an immediate upgrade is not possible, place a reverse proxy or WAF in front of the OpenAM endpoints and reject or HTML-encode SAML message, RelayState, and target URL parameters containing HTML metacharacters before they reach the auto-submit page; this carries a false-positive risk because legitimate SAML messages and RelayState values are base64/URL-encoded and may include characters that naive filters flag, so test against real SAML IdP/SP traffic. Note that patched or unreleased/custom builds aside, the released versions before 16.1.3 are already shielded by an unrelated HTTP 500 abort, so urgent risk is low, but the latent defect should still be closed by upgrading to 16.1.3.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is CWE-79 (improper neutralization of input during web page generation) in OpenAM's SAML 'cookie bounce' handler. In load-balanced OpenAM deployments where SAML POST bindings must be replayed and sticky sessions cannot be honored, OpenAM emits an HTML page containing an auto-submitting form that forwards the SAML message, RelayState parameter, and target URL so the browser can be re-routed to the correct node. When the load-balancer cookie-hash redirect feature is turned on via cookieHashRedirectEnabled, that auto-submit page becomes reachable through normal request handling, and the three forwarded values are inserted into the generated HTML without output encoding. Because the values are attacker-influenced request parameters, unencoded HTML/JS metacharacters land in the OpenAM origin's DOM, producing reflected XSS with scope change (S:C) but only limited confidentiality/integrity impact on the client side (C:L/I:L, A:N) rather than server compromise. The latent nature of the bug comes from a separate, unrelated HTTP 500 error path in released builds prior to 16.1.3 that terminates processing before the response body is delivered, so the injected script never reaches the victim's browser on default released binaries; the defect is nonetheless real and is resolved in 16.1.3. CPE data confirms the affected component as cpe:2.3:a:openidentityplatform:openam across the version ranges listed in the vendor advisory.

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenAM before 16.1.3 contains a latent cross-site scripting defect that places the SAML message, relay state and target URL unencoded into the load-balancer cookie bounce auto-submit page. If reachable with cookieHashRedirectEnabled set, crafted requests could execute script in the OpenAM origin, though an unrelated HTTP 500 failure prevents exploitation in released versions.
