Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the WPFront Notification Bar plugin's debug logging feature (write_debug_logs) to be enabled - this is a non-default operator setting, without which the vulnerable <script> output on wp_footer is never emitted. When that condition is met, an unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit it, but only if a victim clicks a specially crafted link (UI:R) whose URL carries the payload reflected from $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']. Limiting factors: non-default debug-logging configuration, required victim interaction, and the client-side-only, limited impact (no server-side code execution).

Impact

This is a reflected XSS (CWE-79) carrying a CVSS 3.1 base of 6.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) - network-reachable and unauthenticated (PR:N), but gated by user interaction (UI:R) and limited impact (C:L/I:L/A:N) with a scope change. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were supplied, so by the precision rules there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis - this is NOT confirmed active exploitation. Crucially, the published CVSS vector appears to omit a decisive limiting factor stated plainly in the description: the vulnerable code path only emits when the plugin's debug logging (write_debug_logs) is enabled, which is a non-default operator setting outside the attacker's control. That makes AC:L optimistic - real-world exploitability is narrower than the 6.1 suggests, so this is a genuine-but-low-priority issue for most deployments rather than a widespread threat. Treat it as a medium-severity, conditionally-exploitable client-side flaw: patch in routine cycles, prioritize sites known to run with debug logging enabled.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a link to a vulnerable WPFront Notification Bar site (running with debug logging enabled) whose URL path or query string contains a JavaScript payload, then lures a visitor into clicking it. The plugin reflects the raw $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] through vprintf() into a <script> block emitted on wp_footer, so the payload executes in the victim's browser in the site's origin. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; exploitation requires the victim to click the crafted link (UI:R).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 03, 2026

Reflected cross-site scripting in the WPFront Notification Bar WordPress plugin (versions up to and including 3.5.1) lets an unauthenticated remote attacker inject arbitrary JavaScript into a victim's browser by reflecting the raw request URI into an inline script block emitted on wp_footer. The attack requires the plugin's non-default debug logging option (write_debug_logs) to be enabled, and it only fires when a victim follows a specially crafted link, so practical exposure is limited to sites that have turned on debug logging; the impact is client-side only, with low confidentiality and integrity effects and no server-side code execution. Wordfence is the reporting source, no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and there is no CISA KEV listing; the upstream repository shows a changeset (3722432) addressing the code path, though a tagged patched release is not independently confirmed. Note also that the plugin's own score of 6.1 with AC:L assumes a default configuration, whereas our assessment raises attack complexity (AC:H) because exploitation is gated by the non-default debug-logging setting.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to update the WPFront Notification Bar plugin to a release newer than 3.5.1 that incorporates the upstream changeset 3722432; because no tagged patched version is independently confirmed in the available data, administrators should verify the installed version against the plugin repository and the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/39563589-d585-4fba-9685-7e4b4eaef30e?source=cve before assuming they are covered, and treat the fix as "Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed." The single most effective immediate compensating control is to disable the plugin's debug logging (write_debug_logs) setting, since the vulnerable script output on wp_footer is never emitted when logging is off - the trade-off is loss of diagnostic log data, which is acceptable for production sites. Where a plugin update cannot be applied promptly, additional short-term measures include deploying a web application firewall rule or reverse-proxy filter that blocks requests whose URI contains script-breakout characters such as angle brackets, quotes, or the literal sequences used to terminate the inline script string; this reduces exposure but can cause false positives on legitimate URLs containing encoded markup, so it should be logged in monitor-only mode first. Because exploitation depends on a victim clicking a crafted link, user awareness around unsolicited links to affected sites and removal or deactivation of the plugin if it is unused provide further risk reduction, but neither substitutes for patching or disabling debug logging.

Technical ContextAI · show details

WPFront Notification Bar is a PHP plugin for WordPress that renders a configurable notification bar, injecting its markup and inline JavaScript through the wp_footer hook. The vulnerable code path is the debug-log output routine (write_debug_logs), which builds a log line of the form 'Current URL is "%s"' - populated from the URL-text display filter in the filter() method using the raw value of $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] - and then prints it with vprintf() directly inside a <script> block, without any HTML, JavaScript, or JSON escaping. Because REQUEST_URI is fully attacker-controllable via the request line, a crafted URL can break out of the string context and inject script that executes in the origin of the affected page. This is a textbook CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) instance: the fix class requires contextual escaping (esc_js/wp_json_encode) or, better, avoiding reflection of request data into script output altogether. The Trac references point to the controller class at lines 327, 491, and 843 in tag 3.5.1, and to changeset 3722432, which is the upstream code change associated with the issue. The scope-change metric (S:C) in the CVSS vector reflects that the injected script runs in the context of the WordPress site rather than the vulnerable component itself.

DescriptionCVE.org

The WPFront Notification Bar plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting in versions up to, and including, 3.5.1. This is due to the debug-log output path (write_debug_logs) reflecting the raw value of $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] through vprintf() directly inside a <script> block emitted on wp_footer, without any sanitization or escaping (see the 'Current URL is "%s"' log entry produced by the URL-text display filter in the filter() method). This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a specially crafted link.
