Exploitation Conditions

Requires (1) an authenticated MISP account with access to at least one event, and (2) the existence of correlation-table entries linking that accessible event to other events the caller is not permitted to open - i.e. events that are unpublished, or whose distribution level or sharing-group membership changed after the correlation was recorded. The vulnerable path is the related/correlated events listing feature, which trusted the correlation table's stale distribution/sharing-group snapshot (and lacks a published flag) instead of re-validating each target event. Limiting factors: exploitation yields metadata only (titles, dates, correlation counts), never attribute payloads; it is useless if no cross-boundary correlations exist; and it requires valid authentication, so exposure is bounded to existing community members rather than anonymous internet attackers.

Impact

This is a genuine but low-to-moderate priority issue, not a high-CVSS scare. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) with only VC:L and no integrity or availability impact yields a score of 5.3 (Medium), and that rating is well-calibrated: the flaw (CWE-862, Missing Authorization) leaks only event metadata - titles, dates, and correlation value counts - never the underlying attribute/IOC data. It is network-reachable and low-complexity, but requires an authenticated account (PR:L), so it is not an unauthenticated internet-facing bug. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or POC was provided, consistent with no public exploit identified at time of analysis; there is no signal of active exploitation. The practical risk is confidentiality-only reconnaissance within a trust community (e.g., a member of one sharing group inferring the existence and timeline of events in groups they were excluded from). No data is strongly conflicting; the main caveat is that exploitation is entirely contingent on correlation entries existing between the attacker's accessible event and restricted events, which is deployment-dependent and cannot be confirmed from the input.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated MISP user with access to even a single event requests that event's related/correlated events listing; the application reads related-event metadata straight from the correlation table without re-checking the caller's rights against each target event. The user thereby learns titles, dates, and correlation counts of unpublished events or events whose distribution/sharing group has since been restricted. No public exploit code is identified; the attack needs no special tooling beyond normal authenticated UI/API use.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026

Unauthorized disclosure of event metadata in MISP lets any authenticated user enumerate the titles, dates, and correlation counts of events they are not permitted to open. The related-events listing feature retrieved correlated events straight from the correlation table without re-checking the caller's access rights against each target event, and that table stores only a snapshot of distribution level and sharing group (with no published flag), so unpublished events and events whose distribution or sharing group changed after the correlation was recorded were still returned. Exploitation requires an authenticated account with access to at least one event plus pre-existing correlation entries crossing a sharing boundary, and it leaks metadata only - never attribute payloads; no public exploit was identified at time of analysis and the vendor has published a fix commit, making this a genuine but low-to-moderate priority exposure bounded to community members rather than anonymous internet attackers.

RemediationAI

Apply the upstream vendor fix by upgrading MISP to a release that includes commit 2ffa97f05 (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/2ffa97f05); the vendor marks a patch as available, but because the reference is a source commit rather than a tagged release, verify that your packaged version actually contains the change - the fix adds createEventConditions($user) alongside the related-event ID constraint in both EventsController::viewRelatedEvents() and Event::getRelatedEvents(), so a quick post-upgrade grep for 'createEventConditions' in app/Model/Event.php confirms remediation. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls carry real trade-offs: temporarily disable or block the related-events view (remove the /events/viewRelatedEvents Ajax route or the Related Events tab for restricted roles), which restores confidentiality but removes a useful pivot for analysts; tighten the distribution and sharing groups of sensitive or unpublished events, and re-run correlation so stale correlation rows are recomputed, at the cost of additional server load; and reduce the population that can trigger the path by auditing which accounts legitimately need access to correlated events, since exploitation is limited to authenticated users who already have access to at least one correlated event. Do not rely on log-only detection as a fix, but monitoring for one user enumerating viewRelatedEvents across many event IDs is a reasonable interim detective measure.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) is a PHP/CakePHP threat-intelligence sharing application in which each Event carries a distribution level (private, community, connected communities, all) and optionally a Sharing Group; access control is enforced through event-level query conditions generated by Event::createEventConditions($user). Correlations between events are precomputed and stored in a correlation table that records a snapshot of the target event's distribution and sharing group at the moment the correlation was created, and which does not carry the event's published flag at all. The vulnerable code path - EventsController::viewRelatedEvents() and Event::getRelatedEvents() in app/Controller/EventsController.php and app/Model/Event.php - built its lookup with only 'conditions' => ['Event.id' => $relatedEventIds], directly contradicting the in-code assumption (removed by the patch) that 'ACL is enforced via the correlation table itself'. Because no createEventConditions($user) scoping was applied to the events being returned, the query returned any event referenced by a correlation row regardless of current authorization state. This is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): an object-level authorization check was omitted on a secondary retrieval path, and the stale denormalized snapshot made the omission exploitable whenever distribution, sharing-group membership, or published state diverged from the value captured at correlation time. The fix restores consistency by merging createEventConditions($user) with the related-ID constraint in both locations, as shown in commit 2ffa97f05.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains an authorization bypass in the related events listing functionality. When a user requests the list of events correlated to a given event, the system retrieved related event metadata directly from the correlation table without re-validating the caller's access rights against each related event.

The correlation table stores a snapshot of the event's distribution level and sharing group at the time the correlation was created, and does not carry the published flag. As a result, events that the caller is not permitted to open-because they are unpublished, or because their distribution or sharing group has changed since the correlation was recorded-were still returned with their metadata (title, date, correlating value counts).

Preconditions:

  • An authenticated user with access to at least one event in MISP.
  • The existence of correlation entries linking that event to other events the user should not be able to view.

Impact:

  • Unauthorized disclosure of event metadata (titles, dates, correlation counts) for events the user has no right to access.
  • Potential reconnaissance of threat-intelligence event names and timelines across sharing groups.

Affected: MISP versions prior to the fix commit (2ffa97f05).
