Exploitation Conditions

Requires a non-default federated deployment: a linked/remote MISP server must be configured and connected to the local instance, and MISP.tagging must be enabled (the vulnerable onclick rendering is inside a Configure::read('MISP.tagging') block). The attacker must control that linked server to supply a crafted tag ID containing a single quote that breaks out of the onclick JavaScript string literal. Exploitation is further limited by requiring an authenticated local user to open the remote event preview page AND actively interact with (click) the malicious tag element (UI:A); it does not fire on passive page load alone. These factors - trusted-peer prerequisite, authenticated viewer, and required click - substantially narrow realistic exploitation beyond the raw network vector.

Impact

This is a genuinely medium/low real-world priority, not an overstated high-CVSS issue - the input CVSS 4.0 base score is only 4.8 (MEDIUM). The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:A) signals network reach but requires BOTH attacker privilege (PR:L) and active victim interaction (UI:A), and impact is limited to subsequent-system integrity (SI:L) with no confidentiality or availability loss declared by the vendor (VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SA:N). No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. KEV status is absent (not listed) and no POC/exploit code is referenced - exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The dominant risk-limiting factor is architectural: the attacker must already control a linked/remote MISP server that the victim instance trusts and has connected to, which is a federation/peer relationship rather than anonymous internet access. Combined with the required authenticated viewer who must actively click the crafted tag element, realistic exploitation is narrow and targeted. No signals conflict; the main gap is the unconfirmed version boundary (fix stated as v2.5.48 or later, 'exact boundary unconfirmed').

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who operates or has compromised a remote MISP instance that the victim organization has configured as a linked server publishes an event containing a tag whose ID value embeds a single quote and JavaScript payload. When an authenticated analyst on the local instance opens the remote event preview page and clicks the malicious tag element, the payload breaks out of the inline onclick JavaScript string and executes in the analyst's browser session. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the flaw and fix commit (70ad174dd) are public.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026

Cross-site scripting in MISP's remote event preview page allows a malicious or compromised linked MISP server to execute arbitrary JavaScript in an authenticated analyst's browser session. When a federated server link is configured and MISP.tagging is enabled, the tag element's inline onclick attribute embeds the event tag ID inside a JavaScript string literal using only HTML escaping, so a crafted tag ID containing a single quote breaks out of that literal and injects attacker-controlled script. The payload does not fire on page load - the victim must open the remote event preview and click the affected tag - and it is restricted to non-default federated deployments with a hostile peer, yielding a medium/low real-world priority; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and the raw CVSS 4.0 base score is only 4.8 (MEDIUM).

RemediationAI

Apply the upstream fix in commit 70ad174dd (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/70ad174dd), which casts the tag ID to an integer in app/View/Servers/preview_event.ctp; upgrade to a MISP release containing this change - reported as v2.5.48 or later, though the exact release boundary is unconfirmed, so verify the commit is present in your checkout rather than relying on the version number alone. This is an upstream fix available via commit; a tagged release containing it is not independently confirmed here. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable MISP.tagging, which suppresses rendering of the vulnerable onclick attribute entirely (trade-off: the tagging/filter-by-tag workflow on remote event previews is lost). As a second control, remove or disable federation links to remote MISP servers that are not fully trusted, since the attack requires the peer to supply a crafted tag ID (trade-off: loss of intelligence sharing with those peers; consider allowlisting only vetted instances). Because the payload only fires on an explicit click by an authenticated viewer, instructing analysts not to click tag elements on remote event previews from untrusted peers provides incidental risk reduction but is not a reliable primary mitigation. After patching, review server logs for remote event previews from unexpected peers and consider rotating sessions of users who interacted with tag elements sourced from untrusted linked servers.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) is a PHP/CakePHP threat-intelligence sharing application whose views are rendered from .ctp templates. The vulnerable template app/View/Servers/preview_event.ctp builds a tag filter link inside an inline onclick handler: onclick="document.location.href='... /searchtag:<?= h($tag['id']); ?>'". Because tag data on this page originates from a linked (remote) MISP instance, the tag ID is attacker-influenced. The h() helper applies HTML-entity encoding, which is correct for the HTML attribute context but wrong for the nested JavaScript string context - a single quote survives encoding well enough to terminate the string literal and allow script injection. This is the classic CWE-79 'incorrect neutralization / context confusion' failure where output encoding is applied for the wrong interpreter layer (HTML vs. JavaScript). The upstream fix (commit 70ad174dd) replaces h($tag['id']) with a strict (int) cast, forcing the value into a numeric literal where no metacharacters survive. The vulnerable code path is additionally gated by Configure::read('MISP.tagging'), so instances with tagging disabled do not render the affected onclick attribute at all. Per the provided CPE (cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) the entire product line is in scope up to the fix commit.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the remote event preview page. When a linked (remote) MISP server is configured, the event preview renders tag identifiers inside an inline JavaScript onclick attribute. The tag ID value was HTML-escaped but not sanitized for the JavaScript string context, meaning a malicious linked server could supply a tag ID containing characters (such as a single quote) that break out of the JavaScript string literal and inject arbitrary script.

Preconditions:

  • A linked/remote MISP server is configured and connected to the local instance.
  • The linked server supplies a crafted tag ID in an event.
  • An authenticated user views the event preview and interacts with the affected tag element.

Impact:

  • Arbitrary JavaScript execution in the context of the viewing user's browser session, potentially allowing session hijacking, data exfiltration, or unauthorized actions on behalf of the user.

Affected versions: MISP prior to the fix commit (v2.5.48 or later, exact boundary unconfirmed).
