The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires (1) an authenticated MISP user account whose organisation has access to a community-distributed event, and (2) that event must contain at least one object with a more restrictive distribution level (organisation-only, level 0) or a specific sharing-group restriction than the event itself, and (3) use of the event 'flatten' option when fetching the event (API or UI). Exploitation is limited by the PR:L authentication requirement and by the data-dependency: events without restricted-object attributes leak nothing. Instances are only affected on MISP versions below 2.5.48 that use community/sharing-group distribution with object-level restrictions.

Impact

This is a genuine but access-gated information-disclosure flaw, not a high-urgency internet-wide threat. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N, 7.1) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable (AV:N), low attack complexity (AC:L), but requiring an authenticated account (PR:L) that already holds access to a community-distributed event, with pure confidentiality impact (VC:H) and no integrity or availability effect. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present in the supplied data, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - this should be treated as an unexploited, defense-in-depth disclosure bug. The signals do not conflict: a mid-7 CVSS driven entirely by high-value data confidentiality (threat-intel leakage between organisations) is reasonable, but the PR:L gate and the requirement that an event actually contain object-level restricted attributes meaningfully narrow real-world exploitability. There is no evidence this is being targeted; prioritise patching for multi-tenant/community MISP instances but it does not warrant emergency out-of-band response.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated MISP user from one member organisation requests a community-distributed event using the flatten option via the API or UI. Because the flattening code path drops the Object containment and never re-applies the object-level distribution/sharing-group ACL, the response surfaces attributes from organisation-only (distribution 0) or sharing-group-restricted objects that the user's organisation was never entitled to see, leaking another organisation's threat intelligence. No public exploit code is identified; exploitation only requires toggling the existing flatten parameter, so attack complexity is low once a valid account exists.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026

Authorization bypass in MISP's event flattening feature lets an authenticated user who can view a community-distributed event retrieve attributes that belong to organisation-only objects (distribution level 0) or objects restricted to a specific sharing group they are not a member of. MISP versions below 2.5.48 drop the Object containment from the query when the flatten option is used and return those object attributes as top-level event attributes without re-applying the object's own distribution or sharing-group access check, resulting in unauthorized disclosure of sensitive threat intelligence. This is a genuine but access-gated information-disclosure flaw, not a high-urgency internet-wide threat: exploitation requires a valid authenticated account, an event the user's organisation can already see via community distribution, and that event containing at least one object whose distribution is more restrictive than the event itself; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to MISP 2.5.48 or later, which is the first release outside the '<2.5.48' affected range and contains the corrected authorization gate in fetchPaginatedAttributes() and fetchEvent() (upstream fix commits ab08edf92 and 07f3486d5). There is no configuration toggle that fixes the flaw itself, but until patching is possible the most effective compensating control is to avoid the flatten option when retrieving events - both through the API (e.g. the flatten parameter on event/attribute fetch calls) and any UI or integration that sets it - with the trade-off that downstream tooling relying on flattened attributes will receive nested object data instead and may need code changes. Organisations that cannot remove flatten usage should temporarily restrict community distribution of events containing organisation-only or sharing-group-scoped objects, or narrow access to the MISP API to trusted consumer organisations; this reduces exposure but weakens the information-sharing purpose of the platform and is difficult to retro-apply across historical events. Note that because the gate is a read-time ACL, attributes already disclosed cannot be un-disclosed - treat any pre-patch access by parties outside the permitted sharing group as a potential data exposure and review access logs. Applying the vendor patch is strongly preferred over any of these workarounds.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization). MISP models threat intelligence as events that optionally contain Objects, and objects can carry their own distribution level (including 0 = organisation-only) or a sharing-group restriction that is stricter than the parent event's distribution. Access control is normally enforced by CakePHP ORM 'contain' conditions attached to the Object association, which filter which objects (and therefore which attributes) are returned. When an event is fetched with the flatten option, the ORM removes the Object containment so that object attributes are promoted to top-level event attributes; the code that generated those queries did not re-apply the object-level distribution and sharing-group ACL after the containment was dropped, so attributes from restricted objects were returned to any user who could read the event itself. The provided commit diff confirms the fix adds the missing gate in both fetchPaginatedAttributes() and fetchEvent(): flattened attributes now must satisfy either Attribute.object_id = 0 or an object ACL subquery that permits distribution > 0 / != 4, distribution = 4 with a matching sharing_group_id, or ownership by the requesting user's org (and an $isSiteAdmin exemption). A secondary regression was introduced by the initial remediation, which reused the full Object contain conditions - including the soft-delete state - as the gate for flattened attributes; this caused an event owner asking for deleted attributes to lose every attribute whose parent object was still live. The final fix narrows the gate to the distribution ACL condition alone. Affected code is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering all releases before 2.5.48.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains an authorization bypass in the event flattening feature. When a user requests an event with the flatten option enabled, the application removes the Object containment from the query and returns object attributes as top-level event attributes. In doing so, the object-level distribution and sharing-group access control check was not re-applied to those attributes.

As a result, a user who can view a community-distributed event could retrieve attributes belonging to organisation-only objects (distribution level 0) or objects restricted to a specific sharing group, even though the user's organisation does not have access to those objects. This constitutes an unauthorized disclosure of sensitive threat intelligence data.

A secondary issue was introduced by the initial remediation: the fix reused the full Object contain conditions (including soft-delete state) as the gate for flattened attributes, causing an event owner requesting deleted attributes to lose all attributes whose parent object was still live. The final fix isolates the distribution ACL condition as the sole gate.

Preconditions:

  • An authenticated user with access to a community-distributed event
  • The event contains at least one object with a distribution level or sharing group that restricts access beyond the event's own distribution

Impact:

  • Unauthorized disclosure of attributes belonging to restricted objects
  • Potential exposure of organisation-specific threat intelligence to other organisations

Affected versions: <2.5.48

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A flaw in MISP, the threat-intelligence sharing platform used to exchange indicators across trusted communities, can expose sensitive intelligence that was deliberately restricted to a single organisation or an approved sharing group. Because the platform fails to re-check an object's own distribution settings when the event "flatten" option is used, anyone who already has account access and visibility to a community-distributed event can read object attributes they were never meant to see. For intelligence-sharing communities, this undermines the core trust model that members rely on when contributing sensitive material, and it can expose sources, attribution, or ongoing investigations to parties outside the agreed sharing circle.
