MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires ALL of: (1) the site runs PHP below 8.1 - on PHP 8.1+ the save-time sanitisation neutralises single quotes and the attack fails; (2) an authenticated account with the WordPress Author role or higher to create/edit a Download Manager package and set the vulnerable package setting; (3) Download Manager plugin version before 3.3.71; and (4) victim interaction - an administrator or other visitor must open the affected package's download dialogue for the stored payload to fire. The PHP-version gate and the authenticated-author requirement are the primary limiting factors that sharply reduce real-world exploitability on modern, supported deployments. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditional stored-XSS issue, not a widespread emergency. The vendor CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 6.4) is network-reachable but heavily gated: it requires an authenticated contributor, victim interaction (UI:R), and high attack complexity (AC:H) reflecting the narrow precondition that the host runs PHP below 8.1. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active or automatable exploitation. The main conflict is in the vector's privilege and impact framing: the description says the attacker only needs the 'Author role and above,' which is a low-privilege authenticated WordPress role (PR:L), yet WPScan rated it PR:H; and the C:H/I:H/A:H impacts appear to extrapolate full-site compromise from an administrator executing the injected script rather than scoring the XSS's direct browser-context impact (typically C:L/I:L with scope change). Net real-world risk is medium-low: the PHP<8.1 requirement excludes modern, supported stacks (PHP 8.1 reached EOL considerations but remains the floor here), and an Author-level account plus admin victim interaction is needed, so this is a privilege-escalation/account-takeover vector in legacy deployments rather than a mass-exploitable unauthenticated flaw. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a WordPress site running PHP below 8.1, an attacker who holds (or phishes/registers into) an Author-or-above account saves a malicious script payload into a Download Manager package setting, where single quotes are not neutralised on save. When an administrator or any visitor later opens that package's download dialogue, the stored script executes in their browser, enabling session/cookie theft or admin-context actions leading to full site takeover. No public exploit code was identified, and successful execution depends on the PHP<8.1 condition and the victim opening the dialogue. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the Download Manager WordPress plugin before 3.3.71 lets an authenticated user with the WordPress Author role or higher save a crafted package setting that is later output without sufficient escaping, so script executes in the browser of any visitor who opens that package's download dialogue - including administrators. Exploitation is gated by two conditions: the site must run PHP below 8.1, because the sanitisation applied at save time only neutralises single quotes on PHP 8.1 and later, and the attacker must already hold an Author-level account or above. Our assessment rates this CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N - a genuine but conditional issue rather than a widespread emergency; vendor-released patch 3.3.71 is available and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade the Download Manager WordPress plugin to version 3.3.71 or later, which removes the vulnerable output path; this is the primary and preferred fix and applies regardless of PHP version (advisory: https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/eba10cea-445e-4707-ba99-4da194b94597/). If immediate patching is not possible, the single most effective compensating control is to upgrade the site's PHP runtime to 8.1 or higher - that alone neutralises the single-quote handling weakness that this exploit depends on, though the trade-off is that raising the PHP version may break other legacy plugins and themes and must be staged and tested. A complementary control is to tighten role assignments: because the CVSS vector is PR:L, the attack requires an authenticated Author-capable account, so audit accounts holding Author, Editor, or Administrator roles, remove or downgrade any that are not strictly necessary, and avoid granting Author-level access to untrusted contributors; this reduces the number of would-be attackers but does not eliminate the flaw. Note that PHP 8.1+ alone and role reduction alone are partial mitigations - neither should be treated as a substitute for the 3.3.71 upgrade, which is the only fix that closes the vulnerable code path itself.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralisation of Input During Web Page Generation, i.e. cross-site scripting) in a WordPress plugin. Download Manager stores per-package settings as WordPress option/post metadata; when the package's download dialogue is rendered, one of those settings is echoed back into the page without adequate HTML attribute/context escaping. The save-time sanitiser used by the plugin depends on PHP's behaviour when handling single quotes, and on PHP versions below 8.1 that routine fails to strip or encode them, leaving a quote that terminates the surrounding attribute and permits injected markup and event handlers. The result is a stored, persistent payload rather than a reflected one: the injection persists in the database and fires for every subsequent visitor who triggers the affected dialogue. Because the payload is stored in plugin-managed data rather than a browsable post, the usual content-level XSS filters are not the primary defence - the PHP runtime version is. The affected component is the Download Manager WordPress plugin (all releases before 3.3.71), tracked by EUVD as EUVD-2026-90511 and reported via WPScan; the upstream advisory is https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/eba10cea-445e-4707-ba99-4da194b94597/.

Author is a low-privilege role (PR:L not PR:H); AC:H for the PHP<8.1 precondition; UI:R since a victim must open the dialogue; S:C and C:L/I:L for script executing in the victim's browser context.

Lifecycle Timeline
3DescriptionCVE.org
The Download Manager WordPress plugin before 3.3.71 does not sufficiently sanitise and escape a package setting before outputting it back in a page, which could allow users with the Author role and above to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks against any visitor who opens the package's download dialogue, including administrators. Only sites running PHP below 8.1 are affected, as the sanitisation applied when the setting is saved does not neutralise single quotes there.
