Vulnerability Assessment

V8 - Authorization Unnecessary privilege execution
Exploitation Conditions

Requires the attacker to already be running as the pollen daemon user (uid 1000) on a Reachy Mini Wireless device whose OS image was built from reachy-mini-os prior to v0.2.4 - specifically an image containing the /etc/sudoers.d entry granting 'pollen ALL=(root) NOPASSWD:' on /usr/bin/systemctl with no subcommand/argument restriction. No authentication prompt, TTY, or user interaction is needed once pollen access is held. Limiting factors: exploitation is strictly local (attacker must first reach the pollen account, e.g., via a compromised reachy daemon), affects only unpatched images, and is fully neutralized on v0.2.4+ where each sudo command is pinned to fixed arguments. Note the patch also depends on the /bluetooth/commands/*.sh scripts remaining root-owned and non-pollen-writable.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 7.8 HIGH) is well-calibrated and I agree with it: this is a local privilege escalation requiring an existing foothold as the low-privileged pollen user (uid 1000), with no user interaction and trivial complexity. The commit diff confirms the root cause - a blanket 'pollen ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/systemctl' with no argument restriction, which the maintainers themselves describe as 'a trivial local root escalation via systemctl link of an attacker-controlled unit.' No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public PoC is provided in the input, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'; however, the description explicitly states root is obtainable 'in three commands, with no additional vulnerability required,' meaning weaponization is near-trivial for anyone who reads the advisory even absent packaged exploit code. The gating factor is reachability: an attacker must already execute code as pollen, which caps real-world urgency. There is no signal conflict - the network-vs-local question does not arise since both the vector (AV:L) and description agree this is strictly local. This is a genuine but bounded priority: critical impact if the pollen account is reachable (e.g., via a networked daemon RCE), low urgency on isolated devices.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has gained code execution as the pollen daemon user - for example by compromising one of the reachy network-facing daemons that run under that account - writes an attacker-controlled systemd unit whose ExecStart runs as root, then uses the unrestricted passwordless 'sudo systemctl link' / 'enable --now' primitive to load and start it, yielding a root shell. No public exploit is packaged, but the vendor advisory notes full root is reachable in three commands with no user interaction and no second vulnerability.

Local privilege escalation on Reachy Mini Wireless robots running OS images built from pollen-robotics/reachy-mini-os prior to v0.2.4, where a sudoers entry granted the low-privileged pollen daemon user (uid 1000) passwordless root access to /usr/bin/systemctl with no subcommand or argument restriction. Any code already executing as pollen - for example through a compromised reachy daemon - can escalate to full root (uid 0) without user interaction or a TTY, because systemctl can be pointed at an attacker-supplied unit file whose ExecStart runs as root. Rated CVSS 3.1 7.8 HIGH (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H), confirmed by the vendor advisory GHSA-7rhg-9v48-x3h2 and closed by release v0.2.4; no public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires an existing foothold as the pollen user on an unpatched image.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: v0.2.4 - rebuild or reflash Reachy Mini Wireless devices with the reachy-mini-os v0.2.4 image (commit cee4076f36bd95a2a6b894a56a48c7e971e75445), which replaces the blanket rule with a Cmnd_Alias REACHY scoped to fixed arguments (systemctl restart reachy-mini-daemon / reachy-mini-bluetooth, rfkill unblock bluetooth/wifi, shutdown -h now, and the /bluetooth/commands/*.sh scripts) and validates the file with visudo -cf during the build; see advisory GHSA-7rhg-9v48-x3h2. For already-deployed devices that cannot be re-imaged immediately, edit /etc/sudoers.d/010-pollen-reachy as root (with visudo -cf validation to avoid locking out sudo) and replace the unrestricted 'pollen ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/systemctl' line with the argument-pinned Cmnd_Alias above; deleting the entry entirely also closes the escalation but will break WiFi and Bluetooth provisioning at runtime, since the reachy daemons run as pollen without a TTY and sudo will then prompt. When applying the scoped rule, ensure the /bluetooth/commands/*.sh scripts remain root-owned and not writable by pollen (chown root:root, chmod 0755), because any pollen-writable file referenced in the alias re-opens the same escalation primitive. Additional interim hardening: treat the pollen account as security-sensitive, restrict which services can run as pollen, and remove attacker-controlled unit files from /etc/systemd/system (systemctl link targets) if a compromise is suspected. Because the issue is strictly local and requires pre-existing pollen access, no network-facing control is required, but any compromise of a reachy daemon should be treated as full device compromise on unpatched images.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The Reachy Mini Wireless operating system image is generated with pi-gen, the standard Raspberry Pi OS build tool, and creates its own pollen user (uid 1000) at build time rather than going through the Raspberry Pi Imager/firstboot userconf flow. Because raspberrypi-sys-mods >= 1:20251028+1 removed /etc/sudoers.d/010_pi-nopasswd via dpkg-maintscript-helper, and because several reachy daemons run as pollen with no TTY, the project added /etc/sudoers.d/010-pollen-reachy to give the daemons passwordless sudo for WiFi/Bluetooth operations. The pre-0.2.4 version of that file is a textbook CWE-250 (Execution with Unnecessary Privileges) instance: it grants 'pollen ALL=(root) NOPASSWD:' on the bare path /usr/bin/systemctl instead of a fixed set of commands, leaving the daemon user with root-equivalent capability. systemctl accepts arbitrary unit definitions (notably via 'systemctl link', which symlinks a unit file into /etc/systemd/system and then allows enabling and starting it), so pollen can install a unit whose ExecStart runs as root and start it - three commands, no extra vulnerability, no interaction. The CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:pollen-robotics:reachy-mini-os identifies the affected product; the fix pins each permitted command to exact arguments via a Cmnd_Alias, and the commit explicitly warns that the /bluetooth/commands/*.sh scripts must remain root-owned and non-pollen-writable or the argument scoping is bypassable.

DescriptionCVE.org

Reachy Mini ISO for Wireless contains the necessary files to build a custom Raspberry Pi OS image for the Reachy Mini Wireless robot, using pi-gen. Prior to version 0.2.4, the Reachy Mini Wireless OS image shipped with an overly broad sudoers entry granting the pollen daemon user (uid 1000) passwordless sudo access to /usr/bin/systemctl with no subcommand or argument restriction. This is a local privilege escalation (LPE). Any process running as pollen can obtain full root (uid 0) on the device in three commands, with no additional vulnerability required and no user interaction. This issue has been patched in version 0.2.4.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Reachy Mini Wireless robots running OS images built from pollen-robotics/reachy-mini-os prior to v0.2.4 ship with a configuration flaw that lets anyone who already holds a foothold as the low-privileged pollen daemon user escalate to full root control of the device. For leadership, the concern is fleet-level: root on a deployed robot undermines the integrity and availability of the platform and anything it touches, and remediation is an image-level rebuild across the fleet rather than a routine software update. Affected units are those on older OS images; no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis, so this is a hardening and lifecycle-management priority rather than an emergency incident.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

The vendor release v0.2.4 addresses this per GHSA-7rhg-9v48-x3h2; until images can be rebuilt, remove or restrict the passwordless sudoers grant for the pollen daemon user - particularly the unrestricted /usr/bin/systemctl entry - prevent the pollen account from writing or modifying systemd unit files, and minimize the services running as pollen to reduce exposure.
