MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to hold galaxy editor privileges either on the local MISP instance or on any instance that synchronizes to the target (the sync path is the key amplifier, since clusters propagate between federated instances). The attacker stores a javascript:-scheme string in a Galaxy Cluster's 'source' field, which pre-2.5.48 MISP renders as a clickable <a href> whenever PHP's FILTER_VALIDATE_URL accepts it - and FILTER_VALIDATE_URL does accept javascript: URIs. Exploitation is LIMITED by two factors: it is authenticated (galaxy editor role, PR:L, so not open to anonymous attackers) and it demands active victim interaction - the victim must both open the affected cluster view and click the rendered link (UI:A), not merely load a page. Only MISP versions below 2.5.48 are affected; the fix adds an ^https?:// scheme allowlist. |
| Impact | This is a stored XSS (CWE-79) in MISP that carries a real but conditional risk profile. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:H/SI:H/SA:N, 6.2) correctly reflects the two gating factors: the attacker needs galaxy editor privileges (PR:L) and the victim must both view the cluster AND actively click the malicious link (UI:A / Active user interaction). No EPSS score, KEV listing, SSVC decision, or public POC is present in the input, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - this is not a drop-everything emergency. The genuine severity driver is the injection sink itself, which is unambiguously confirmed by the vendor commit: FILTER_VALIDATE_URL accepts the javascript: scheme, and the old code emitted the source verbatim into an href. The vendor rates the subsequent-system (browser) confidentiality/integrity impact as High (SC:H/SI:H) because session hijacking is plausible; I regard High as somewhat aggressive for a typical stored-XSS payload and would rate it Low, but the direction is correct. The trust-federation angle raises the effective risk beyond the raw score: MISP instances routinely sync galaxy clusters from peers, so a malicious cluster authored on one instance propagates to all synced instances, widening the victim pool without the attacker needing local editor rights on each target. Net: a legitimate patch-soon priority for MISP operators, not a mass-exploitation-grade flaw. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker holding galaxy editor privileges on a MISP instance - or on any instance that syncs to the target - creates or edits a Galaxy Cluster and sets its 'source' field to a javascript: URL. The cluster synchronizes to peer instances, and when an analyst on a victim instance opens the cluster view and clicks the rendered 'source' link, the embedded script executes in their authenticated MISP session, enabling session hijacking, data exfiltration, or actions taken as that user. No public exploit code is identified in the provided data, though the vendor commit fully reveals the vulnerable pattern. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in MISP before 2.5.48 allows an authenticated user with galaxy editor privileges to persist a javascript: URI in a Galaxy Cluster's 'source' field, which the application then renders as a clickable hyperlink; when a victim views the affected cluster and clicks the link, embedded script executes in the victim's browser context, enabling session hijacking, data exfiltration, or unauthorized actions as the victim. The sync path is the key risk amplifier: because Galaxy Clusters propagate between federated MISP instances, an editor on any instance that synchronizes to the target can plant the payload, so the attack surface extends beyond a single local deployment. Exploitation requires both authenticated galaxy editor access (PR:L) and active victim interaction (the victim must click the rendered link, not merely load the page), and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; the vendor has released a fix in 2.5.48.
RemediationAI
Upgrade MISP to version 2.5.48 or later, which is the vendor-released patch containing commit 118528767; the fix restricts Galaxy Cluster source rendering to URLs matching an ^https?:// scheme allowlist, so javascript: and other non-HTTP schemes are displayed as plain escaped text rather than clickable links. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict galaxy editor privileges to fully trusted accounts and be cautious about synchronizing Galaxy Clusters from federated instances you do not control, since the sync path is the primary amplifier for this attack; note the trade-off that tightening editor roles or limiting federation reduces intelligence-sharing coverage. Administrators can also audit existing Galaxy Cluster 'source' values for non-HTTP schemes (for example values beginning with 'javascript:') and clear or correct any found, since the payload persists in the database until remediated. Because exploitation additionally requires a victim to click the rendered link, user awareness of suspicious cluster links offers only marginal interim protection. Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a CWE-79 improper neutralization of input during web page generation (stored XSS) rooted in MISP's use of PHP's FILTER_VALIDATE_URL to decide whether a Galaxy Cluster's 'source' value should be rendered as an <a href> link. FILTER_VALIDATE_URL validates syntactic URL structure but does not restrict the scheme, so a value such as 'javascript:alert(document.cookie)' passes validation, and the CakePHP view templates (app/View/GalaxyClusters/view.ctp and the Overmind theme's galaxy_clusters_general.ctp) previously emitted it inside an href attribute. Although the output is passed through CakePHP's h() escaping, escaping does not neutralize a javascript: scheme inside an href, so the browser executes the script on click. Galaxy Clusters are a core MISP construct for tagging threat intelligence with adversary, tool, and campaign metadata, and they are shared across federated instances via sync, which is why a single malicious editor's stored value can reach and persist on downstream servers. The upstream fix adds a scheme allowlist check (preg_match('/^https?:\/\//i', ...)) so only http/https URLs are rendered as hyperlinks, in addition to the existing FILTER_VALIDATE_URL check.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP renders the source field of a Galaxy Cluster as a clickable hyperlink whenever the stored value passes PHP's FILTER_VALIDATE_URL validation. Because FILTER_VALIDATE_URL accepts the javascript: URI scheme, a user with galaxy editor privileges on the local instance or on a synced instance could store a javascript: URL as the cluster source.
When another user views the affected Galaxy Cluster and clicks the rendered link, the embedded script executes in the victim's browser context, enabling session hijacking, data exfiltration, or actions performed on behalf of the victim.
Preconditions:
- Attacker must hold galaxy editor privileges (local or via sync).
- Victim must view the affected cluster and click the malicious link.
Impact:
- Stored cross-site scripting (XSS) in the victim's browser.
- Potential session theft, credential harvesting, or unauthorized actions within the MISP application.
Affected: <2.5.48.
