MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated account with contributor-level role or higher on a WordPress site running Content Egg before 11.9.0, and specifically requires use of the bulk content-import feature with an import preset authored by a more privileged user. Exploitation is further gated by user interaction (UI:R): a victim - ideally an administrator - must later view the maliciously created post for the stored script to execute in their session. Impact is bounded by the privilege level of whoever views the content; the elevated C:H/I:H/A:H outcome depends on an administrator viewing the payload. Sites that do not grant contributor accounts to untrusted users are not realistically exposed. |
| Impact | This is a broken-access-control flaw in the bulk content-import feature that culminates in stored XSS, reported by WPScan and patched by the vendor in 11.9.0. The vendor CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 6.8) is internally inconsistent with the description in two respects worth flagging: (1) the description explicitly states 'contributor-level access and above,' which conventionally maps to PR:L, not the PR:H shown in the vector - this understates ease of exploitation; and (2) an XSS that executes 'in the context of anyone who later views that content' (i.e., in a more privileged user's browser session) is normally a scope change (S:C), yet the vendor marks S:U while simultaneously claiming C:H/I:H/A:H - total technical impact. The C:H/I:H/A:H is defensible only if the script executes in an administrator's session and is chained to full site takeover (create admin user, plant backdoor), which is a realistic outcome for admin-context WordPress XSS. Corroborating this, SSVC assigns Technical Impact: total. However, SSVC also records Exploitation: none and Automatable: no, there is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no explicit public POC - so despite the 'total impact' framing this is a latent, not actively-exploited, issue. Net: a genuine account/privilege-boundary bug requiring a contributor foothold plus victim interaction, meriting prompt patching but not emergency response. Prioritize based on whether untrusted users hold contributor roles on the site. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already holds a contributor (or higher) account on a WordPress site running Content Egg selects an import preset owned by a privileged user (e.g., an administrator) and runs the bulk content-import feature; the plugin fails to check that the contributor is authorized for that preset and switches to the preset author's identity, so the resulting post is created under the privileged account with the contributor's unfiltered script payload intact. When an administrator or other visitor later views the post, the stored JavaScript executes in their authenticated session, enabling actions up to and including site takeover. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though WPScan holds the technical details. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the Content Egg plugin for WordPress before 11.9.0 allows an authenticated attacker holding contributor-level access or higher to plant arbitrary web scripts inside posts that the plugin creates under a more privileged author's identity. The root problem is a missing authorization check on the bulk content-import feature: the plugin never verifies that the acting user is permitted to use the import preset they select, and it then switches to that preset author's identity before the post is written, so the injected markup is stored and later executes in the browser session of anyone who views the content - most damagingly an administrator. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released a fix in version 11.9.0; exploitation requires the site to grant contributor accounts to untrusted users and requires a victim to view the tainted post.
RemediationAI
The primary fix is to upgrade the Content Egg plugin to version 11.9.0 or later, which the vendor released to close the missing authorization check and the identity-switch behavior in the bulk content-import feature (patch status: available from vendor, exact fix version 11.9.0); the WPScan advisory at https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/917b8042-b38c-4b6a-9237-1dd08ada157d/ and the NVD entry at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-92424 should be reviewed alongside the upgrade. Where an immediate update is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to stop untrusted users from reaching the import path: audit contributor-and-above accounts and remove or downgrade any that are not fully trusted, and restrict creation and use of import presets to administrator-only users so that a low-privileged account cannot select a preset authored by someone more privileged - the trade-off is that this breaks delegated editorial workflows and bulk-import automation for contributor accounts. If the plugin offers a toggle for the bulk content-import / preset feature, disabling it removes the exploit path entirely at the cost of losing automated content aggregation until patching is complete; as a secondary measure, a WAF rule or content filter targeting script tags in newly created posts can blunt delivery but is easily bypassed and should not replace the upgrade. Finally, because payloads are stored, perform a post-upgrade audit of recently created posts for injected script content and re-sanitize or delete anything suspicious, since patching alone does not remove already-stored payloads.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Content Egg is a content-aggregation and affiliate/auto-blogging plugin for WordPress whose bulk content-import feature lets an editor pick a saved "import preset" and generate posts from it. A preset stores configuration as well as a post-author identity, and the vulnerable code path neither validates the caller's capability against that preset (a broken access control weakness, the underlying class behind the CWE-79 stored XSS classification) nor preserves the caller's own identity, instead assuming the preset author's identity for the post it creates. Because the resulting post content is stored without proper output/input sanitization in that privileged context, script payloads survive as stored XSS and run with the privileges of whoever renders the page, typically an administrator. The independent assessment rates this CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N - network-reachable, low complexity, but requiring an authenticated low-privilege (contributor) account and victim interaction, with scope change reflecting that a plugin-level defect compromises the wider WordPress application and its admin sessions. Impact magnitude is bounded by the privilege of the viewer; the high confidentiality/integrity/availability outcome is realized only if an administrator views the poisoned post. The EUVD record lists the affected range as "Content Egg 0 <11.9.0"; no CPE identifiers were supplied in the available data.

3DescriptionCVE.org
The Content Egg WordPress plugin before 11.9.0 does not verify that a user running its bulk content-import feature is authorized for the import preset they select, and switches to the preset author's identity before creating the resulting post, allowing users with contributor-level access and above to store arbitrary web scripts unfiltered under a privileged user's account, executing in the context of anyone who later views that content.
