Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to have ALREADY compromised the Chrome renderer process (a prior, separate vulnerability), after which this missing-authorization flaw in CORS handling permits bypassing the web origin policy via a crafted HTML page. Limiting factors: user interaction is required (UI:R - victim must load the attacker's page), the flaw affects only Chrome builds prior to 154.0.8037.92, and it is not independently exploitable without the preceding renderer compromise, which is why SSVC rates it non-automatable with partial technical impact.

Impact

This is a Medium-severity Chromium issue with genuinely modest real-world risk despite the 6.5 CVSS. The single most important signal is the description's explicit precondition: exploitation requires an attacker 'who had compromised the renderer process.' This means the bug is a second-stage primitive that only becomes reachable AFTER a separate renderer compromise (e.g. via a prior V8/DOM RCE), not a standalone remote entry point. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R) does not capture this chaining prerequisite - PR:N understates the real barrier, since the attacker must already control renderer-level code execution before this authorization/CORS bypass matters. All secondary signals agree on low urgency: SSVC reports Exploitation=none, Automatable=no, Technical Impact=partial; there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit code identified. There is a slight internal tension in the vendor vector itself - a web-origin-policy bypass that lets an attacker read cross-origin data would normally imply confidentiality impact (C:H), yet the vector sets C:N/I:H; the I:H likely reflects the ability to violate origin integrity guarantees rather than exfiltrate data, but this is worth verifying against the Chromium issue tracker (issue 554038924). Net: real but low priority - a defense-in-depth sandbox/origin-isolation weakness, not an independently exploitable network vulnerability.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker first achieves code execution inside Chrome's renderer sandbox through a separate vulnerability, then leverages this CORS authorization gap to make the compromised renderer issue cross-origin requests that bypass the web origin policy, reading or acting on resources it should not be able to reach. A crafted HTML page delivered to the victim is the initial lure requiring user interaction (UI:R). No public exploit code exists and CISA reports no observed exploitation.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026

Origin policy bypass in Google Chrome builds prior to 154.0.8037.92 lets a remote attacker who has already compromised the renderer process escape web origin restrictions via a crafted HTML page, producing a high integrity impact while confidentiality is unaffected. The defect is a missing authorization check in the browser's CORS handling (CWE-862), and it is not independently exploitable - a separate renderer-compromise vulnerability must be chained first, and the victim must load attacker-controlled content (UI:R). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, CISA's SSVC rates exploitation as none and the issue as non-automatable with partial technical impact, and the vendor fix is Chrome 154.0.8037.92.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Google Chrome 154.0.8037.92 or later via the stable channel (https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2026/09/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_01807488085.html) - this is the vendor-released patch and the only complete fix; restart the browser after updating so the new binary is loaded, and confirm the version under chrome://version. Because exploitation requires a preceding renderer compromise, the highest-value compensating control is patching renderer-level memory-safety and sandbox bugs promptly and keeping Chrome on an auto-update or forced-update enterprise policy, since this CORS flaw on its own is not remotely reachable (SSVC: not automatable). Additional hardening that reduces exposure with minimal side effects: keep Site Isolation enabled (disabling it for performance or compatibility would directly widen the impact of any renderer compromise), run the browser with the standard sandbox enabled, and reduce the number of untrusted pages and high-privilege extensions a user routinely loads, since UI:R means the attack still needs the victim to open a crafted page. Blocking or proxying specific origins is not a reliable workaround because the bypass occurs inside the browser's own CORS enforcement rather than at the network layer, and tampering with Access-Control headers or disabling CORS extensions will break legitimate cross-origin web applications - avoid these as first-line mitigations. There is no vendor-acknowledged partial workaround, so treat the version upgrade as mandatory; consult https://issues.chromium.org/issues/554038924 for the full pre-154.0.8037.92 milestone list affected by the fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

CORS (Cross-Origin Resource Sharing) is the HTTP-header-driven mechanism that lets a web server selectively relax the browser's same-origin policy, for example through Access-Control-Allow-Origin and Access-Control-Allow-Credentials. This CVE is a missing authorization weakness (CWE-862) in that enforcement path: a required permission check on a cross-origin operation was omitted, so a crafted HTML page can drive the browser into accepting or acting on cross-origin interactions the origin model should have rejected. The context is Chromium's multi-process architecture, in which web content runs in a sandboxed renderer that is explicitly treated as untrusted-capable - the browser process must independently validate origin and CORS decisions rather than trusting renderer-supplied state. Because the flaw only becomes reachable once the renderer is already compromised (via a prior, separate vulnerability), it functions as a sandbox/origin-isolation hardening gap that amplifies another bug rather than a standalone remote entry point; this is consistent with the SSVC rating of non-automatable and partial technical impact, and with our assessed vector, which raises attack complexity to AC:H relative to the published CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N. The affected CPE, cpe:2.3:a:google:chrome:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, uses a wildcard version because the CPE does not itself encode the 154.0.8037.92 boundary. Chromium security severity is Medium.
