MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the WikiSEO extension to be installed and enabled on a MediaWiki instance running a version below 1.46.1 / 1.45.5 / 1.43.10, and requires the attacker to be able to save page content containing WikiSEO SEO/meta directives (i.e. edit rights - unauthenticated only if the wiki allows anonymous editing). The payload is stored, so execution is gated on a victim subsequently viewing the affected page (UI:R); it does not fire automatically. Limiting factors: the Low C/Low I impact ceiling, the dependence on a victim loading the poisoned page, and the need for edit privileges all constrain realistic impact well below a critical/unauthenticated-RCE profile. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-urgency issue. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 6.1 MEDIUM) describes a network-reachable stored XSS requiring victim interaction, with scope change (S:C, script escaping into the victim's browser context) but only Low confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact. All real-world exploitation signals point the same direction and are consistent with each other: SSVC = Exploitation 'none', Automatable 'no', Technical Impact 'partial'; no CISA KEV listing; no EPSS score supplied; and no public exploit code identified. There is no conflict between the signals - CVSS caps this at MEDIUM, and the SSVC framework independently argues against prioritization (no observed exploitation, not automatable, only partial impact). The one metric worth questioning is PR:N: WikiSEO sets SEO/meta-tag output from page content, which typically requires an account with edit rights to persist the payload, so real-world prerequisites may be closer to PR:L than the vendor's PR:N - verify against the deployment's editing/registration policy. Net: a real, patch-worthy defect but not an emergency; prioritize behind internet-exposed, unauthenticated, or actively-exploited findings. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with the ability to edit a wiki page (or an anonymous editor if the wiki permits unauthenticated edits) inserts a crafted WikiSEO directive whose meta/SEO value is not properly neutralized, so the markup is stored and emitted into rendered page output. When another user - potentially an administrator - later views the affected page, the injected script executes in their browser session (session/cookie theft, actions on their behalf, defacement). No public proof-of-concept exploit has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the WikiSEO extension for MediaWiki (all versions before 1.46.1, 1.45.5, and 1.43.10) lets an attacker who can save page content containing WikiSEO SEO/meta directives persist malicious script that runs in the browser of any user who later views the poisoned page. Exploitation is constrained by the need for edit privileges (unauthenticated only on wikis that deliberately allow anonymous editing) and by the requirement that a victim load the affected page, keeping the realistic impact to low confidentiality and integrity effects. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and CISA's SSVC framework rates exploitation as 'none'; vendor patches are available, making this a genuine but low-urgency issue.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade the MediaWiki WikiSEO extension to 1.46.1, 1.45.5, or 1.43.10 depending on the maintenance branch in use; patch references and release discussion are at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T430896 and https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/q/Iff6ef320017649750e5c6723a91ee298eb97a408. If upgrade cannot be performed immediately, the most effective compensating control is to restrict page-edit rights to a trusted group and disable anonymous editing - this removes the attacker's ability to store the payload, at the cost of reduced wiki openness and potential loss of community contributions. Disabling the WikiSEO extension entirely also eliminates exposure, with the trade-off that the wiki loses its SEO/meta-tag generation features and may need a replacement mechanism. Administrators should additionally run MediaWiki's standard input sanitization review for any locally customized parser functions that forward editor-supplied values into HTML attributes, since the underlying defect is unsafe output encoding during page generation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MediaWiki is a PHP-based wiki platform, and the WikiSEO extension is a third-party component that generates SEO metadata - meta descriptions, keywords, and Open Graph/Twitter card tags - from values supplied by editors through parser functions or page-level directives. The root cause is CWE-79, improper neutralization of input during web page generation: content stored in the wiki is not correctly escaped or attribute-encoded when WikiSEO emits it into HTML meta tags, so an attacker with edit access can inject markup or JavaScript that is persisted in the page and re-executed for subsequent viewers. The scope change (S:C) reflects that script executes in the browser context of the wiki rather than staying confined to the vulnerable extension component, while the Low C/Low I rating and absent availability impact bound the damage. The CNA-published CVSS 3.1 vector records PR:N, but our independent assessment scores it PR:L (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) because saving WikiSEO directives normally requires page-edit rights; the PR:L variant should be treated as the realistic prerequisite unless the wiki has anonymous editing enabled.

Network-reachable stored XSS escaping into victim context (S:C, C:L/I:L); PR:L because persisting WikiSEO meta content requires page-edit rights, and UI:R since a victim must view the page.
