1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires the victim to open or interact with attacker-controlled web content in a vulnerable Firefox build (UI:R) - versions prior to Firefox 157 or ESR 153.4. No authentication or pre-existing privileges are needed on the attacker side (PR:N), and no special victim configuration is indicated; default Firefox rendering of a crafted page is the trigger. The primary limiting factor is the required user interaction (the victim must be induced to visit the malicious page), and per SSVC the attack is not automatable, reducing suitability for worm-like mass exploitation. Patched Firefox 157 / ESR 153.4 installations are not exploitable.

Impact

This is a genuinely serious-severity browser flaw but not currently a top operational firefight. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 8.8) reflects total technical impact via a CWE-269 privilege escalation in Firefox's Places (bookmarks/history) component, reachable by a remote unauthenticated attacker who lures a victim to a crafted page (UI:R). All exploitation signals, however, point AWAY from imminent mass exploitation: SSVC records Exploitation=none, Automatable=no, Technical Impact=total; there is no CISA KEV listing, no EPSS score supplied, and no public POC. So the picture is HIGH IMPACT but no evidence of exploitation - 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The one signal worth flagging as ambiguous: CWE-269 privilege escalation combined with the vague 'Places component' description does not make clear whether the escalation is content-process-to-parent (a partial sandbox escape) or a lower-tier in-browser privilege gain; the S:U (scope unchanged) here - unlike the S:C sandbox-escape siblings CVE-2026-100800/100804 rated 9.6 - implies the escalation stays within a single security authority, which is consistent with the 8.8 rather than a scope-changing 9.6. Given Firefox's ubiquity, this warrants prompt patching, but the absence of automation and active exploitation makes it routine-urgent, not emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker hosts a malicious web page and drives a victim to it via phishing, malvertising, or a compromised site (UI:R). When the victim's Firefox renders attacker-controlled content that abuses the Places component's privilege management, the flaw grants elevated privileges leading to full compromise of the browser's security context (C:H/I:H/A:H). No public POC or active exploitation is known, and the attack is not automatable per SSVC.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026

Privilege escalation in Mozilla Firefox's Places component lets a remote attacker reach elevated, normally chrome-restricted functionality inside the browser when a victim opens attacker-controlled web content in an affected build. Affected releases are Firefox versions before 157 and Firefox ESR versions before 153.4, rated 8.8 under CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, which means no attacker-side authentication or privileges are required but the victim must be induced to interact with a crafted page, after which confidentiality, integrity and availability impact is total within the affected security scope (CWE-269 improper privilege management). There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV entry; CISA SSVC rates exploitation as "none" and the attack as not automatable, so this is a serious browser flaw rather than a current worm or mass-exploitation emergency, and it is fully resolved by updating to Firefox 157 or Firefox ESR 153.4.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: update to Firefox 157 (release channel) or Firefox ESR 153.4 (ESR channel), which are the versions in which this Places privilege-escalation flaw was fixed, per Mozilla advisories https://www.mozilla.org/security/advisories/mfsa2026-97/ and https://www.mozilla.org/security/advisories/mfsa2026-100/ and tracking bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2054767. For managed fleets, push the update through enterprise policy (Extensions/App Update settings) or your software-distribution tooling and verify the reported browser version rather than relying on auto-update, since ESR hosts can lag behind the release channel; this is the only reliable remediation because the flaw crosses a privilege boundary inside the browser and cannot be neutralized by content-level controls. If patching must be staged, note that no supported configuration disables the Places subsystem without breaking bookmarks and history, so compensating measures are limited to reducing exposure to the trigger: enforce strict network egress filtering and URL/domain blocklists to keep users away from known malicious pages, and reinforce user awareness about unsolicited links, accepting that these controls are partial and leave the underlying boundary weakness in place. Prompt update remains the priority given the total technical impact rating, even though no exploitation or public exploit code is currently reported.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Places is Firefox's bookmarks-and-history subsystem: it stores browsing data in the SQLite places.sqlite database and is surfaced through the privileged nsINavBookmarksService and nsINavHistoryService interfaces, which are reachable both from browser chrome code and from content-facing APIs. The assigned CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management) indicates that a code path in Places does not correctly enforce the privilege boundary expected of its caller, so content-driven activity can invoke functionality that should remain reserved to privileged browser internals. The CVSS vector supports that reading: AV:N and PR:N describe an unauthenticated remote attacker, UI:R captures the mandatory victim interaction with a crafted page, and S:U with C:H/I:H/A:H describes a full-impact compromise confined to the browser's own security authority rather than a cross-origin data read. The generic CPE cpe:2.3:a:mozilla:firefox:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the Firefox product string and does not differentiate channels, so ESR builds are treated as affected based on the stated fix notes. Vendor details are tracked in Mozilla bug 2054767 and advisories mfsa2026-97 and mfsa2026-100; CISA SSVC flags technical impact as total but exploitation as none and not automatable, which bounds the practical threat to targeted or opportunistic delivery that depends on user interaction.

DescriptionCVE.org

Privilege escalation in the Places component. This vulnerability was fixed in Firefox ESR 153.4 and Firefox 157.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Mozilla Firefox, including the ESR release channel that many enterprises standardize on, carries a high-severity privilege-escalation flaw (CVE-2026-100824) that lets a malicious web page escape the browser's normal sandboxing boundary and reach functionality normally reserved for Firefox itself. Within that boundary an attacker can read, modify, or disrupt anything the browser touches - including authenticated sessions, saved data, and web application content - though the impact stops at the browser rather than the underlying operating system. Because exploitation requires only that an employee open a crafted page in an affected build, every web-browsing user is a potential target, and remediation is a routine browser update rather than a disruptive engineering effort.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch (Firefox 157 or Firefox ESR 153.4). Where immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict browsing of untrusted content, keep the browser out of privileged administrative workflows, and monitor for anomalous profile or Places database activity.
