Network-reachable and unauthenticated (PR:N) but AC:H because it needs a name-constrained CA deployment plus a crafted non-dNSName-SAN cert; impact limited to accepting an out-of-scope identity, so C:L/I:L, A:N.

1DescriptionCVE.org
A certificate with no dNSName SAN but another SAN type present (e.g. registeredID or iPAddress) bypassed the Subject CN dNSName name-constraint check. The CN-as-DNS fallback was gated on cert->subjectCN != NULL && cert->altNames == NULL && !cert->isCA instead of "no dNSName SAN", so an out-of-scope CN was accepted. This incomplete fix from CVE-2026-6731, leading to the name-constraint check issue, was introduced in wolfSSL version 5.9.2.
AnalysisAI
wolfSSL 5.9.2 accepts leaf certificates whose Subject CN falls outside a CA's dNSName name constraints whenever the leaf carries any other SAN type (such as registeredID or iPAddress) instead of a dNSName SAN, allowing an out-of-scope identity to pass validation. The defect is a regression introduced by the incomplete fix for CVE-2026-6731: the CN-as-DNS fallback was gated on the absence of any SAN extension rather than the absence of a dNSName SAN specifically. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires a PKI deployment where a signing CA enforces dNSName name constraints, AND a leaf certificate whose Subject CN is outside those constraints while carrying at least one non-dNSName SAN (registeredID or iPAddress) that itself is unconstrained by the CA. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine certificate-validation weakness but a low-urgency one. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade wolfSSL past 5.9.2 to a build containing the corrected CN-fallback logic; the upstream fix is in pull request https://github.com/wolfSSL/wolfssl/pull/10837, which reworks the test so a non-dNSName SAN no longer suppresses the CN name-constraint check and the out-of-scope CN plus registeredID or iPAddress SAN case now correctly returns ASN_NAME_INVALID_E. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
