Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the TemplateSandbox extension to be installed on a MediaWiki instance and an attacker holding a low-privileged authenticated account (PR:L) able to submit template/wikitext to the sandbox preview. It further requires active user interaction (UI:A): a victim must be induced to view the attacker-crafted preview or page for the injected script to execute in their browser session. These two gates - authentication plus victim interaction - substantially limit realistic exploitation; it is not remotely triggerable against a default page load without a targeted user. Impact is confined to browser-side script execution in the wiki origin (Low confidentiality/integrity/availability), not server-side compromise.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-to-moderate priority issue despite the CWE-79 XSS classification. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:A/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) scores only 4.8 (medium), and the individual signals corroborate a low real-world risk: exploitation requires at least low-level privileges (PR:L - an authenticated wiki account) AND active user interaction (UI:A - a victim must be induced to view the crafted preview/page). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public proof-of-concept were provided, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The impact metrics are uniformly Low (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) rather than High, consistent with a script-execution-in-browser XSS rather than server compromise. The 4.0 vector marks subsequent-system impacts (SC:L/SI:L/SA:L) as Low, hinting the extension author considered a limited cross-context effect (script running in another user's authenticated wiki session). No signals conflict; all point to a real but not urgent, doubly-gated (auth + interaction) flaw in a niche MediaWiki extension.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a low-privileged wiki account uses the TemplateSandbox preview feature to craft template/wikitext input containing an unneutralized script payload, then lures another logged-in user (e.g., a reviewer) to open the crafted sandbox preview. When the victim's browser renders the page, the injected script executes in the wiki origin, enabling actions such as session/token theft or actions on the victim's behalf. No public proof-of-concept is available at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the MediaWiki TemplateSandbox extension allows low-privileged authenticated editors to inject arbitrary JavaScript into template sandbox previews, which then executes in the browser of any user induced to view the crafted content. Exploitation requires the extension to be installed, a valid low-privileged account to submit the malicious wikitext, and victim interaction with the preview. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified, and the impact is limited to browser-side script execution in the wiki origin rather than server compromise.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to the fixed versions: MediaWiki 1.46.1, 1.45.5, or 1.43.10 depending on the branch in use, which include the patch referenced in the Gerrit change I6630b9915f640bf75c8570165eb8728bd7a2c07a. If upgrading immediately is not possible, consider disabling the TemplateSandbox extension if the preview functionality is not business-critical, though this removes a useful editor feature. Alternatively, restrict the ability to use the sandbox preview to trusted, high-privilege users, but note that this is not a complete fix and may break normal editing workflows. Because exploitation requires authenticated access and victim interaction, prioritize patching based on your wiki's exposure to untrusted editors. Monitor the Phabricator task T430596 for updates.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is a CWE-79 improper neutralization of input during web page generation (cross-site scripting) in the TemplateSandbox extension for MediaWiki, a popular open-source wiki platform. TemplateSandbox lets editors preview how template changes will render before saving them; the extension fails to properly escape user-supplied template or wikitext output in that preview, allowing injected JavaScript to be reflected or stored in the sandbox view. The CPE wildcard cpe:2.3:a:wikimedia_foundation:mediawiki_-_templatesandbox_extension:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates all versions of the extension are affected prior to the fixed releases. The CVSS vector shows network attack vector, low attack complexity, low privileges required, and active user interaction, with scope change and low confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts confined to the browser session.
