MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Defense Evasion The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated GLPI administrator who holds the 'Update auth and sync' or 'Update auth, sync and 2FA' right (User::UPDATEAUTHENT) - this is a privileged, non-default delegated right, matching CVSS PR:H. Exploitation is only meaningful in multi-entity GLPI deployments, because the flaw is the failure to enforce the TARGET user's entity-scoped UPDATE permission when the actor operates on accounts outside their own entity scope (CVSS AT:P reflects this required cross-entity condition). No end-user interaction is needed (UI:N). It does not affect single-entity installations where the admin already legitimately controls all users, and it is limited to changing authentication method and toggling 2FA rather than arbitrary account modification. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-priority authorization flaw, not a high-severity emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:N, base 5.9) already encodes the two biggest limiters: PR:H means the attacker must already hold a privileged GLPI right (the 'Update auth and sync' / UPDATEAUTHENT administrative right), and AT:P (Attack Requirements: Present) reflects that the flaw only manifests against target user accounts that fall outside the acting administrator's entity scope. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - the risk is entirely theoretical/insider-driven at this point. The NVD impact metrics (VC:H, VA:H) appear overstated: disabling 2FA and switching a foreign account's authentication method weakens that account's security posture and modifies its configuration, but it does not by itself disclose confidential data or take a system down, so a more defensible reading is a modest integrity impact with a scope change across entities. Bottom line: a real cross-tenant privilege-boundary defect worth patching, but gated behind an existing admin right and abnormal (out-of-scope) targeting, so it is high-CVSS-for-the-class rather than an urgent internet-facing risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A GLPI administrator in a multi-entity deployment who has been delegated only the 'Update auth and sync' right for their own entity navigates the user-account administration / mass-action flow and targets user accounts belonging to a different entity they should not control. Because the flow validated only the global UPDATEAUTHENT right and never the target user's entity-scoped UPDATE permission, the administrator switches those foreign users' authentication method and disables their two-factor authentication, weakening or hijacking accounts outside their authority. No public exploit code is available; this is an authenticated, network-reachable abuse of an over-broad admin right. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Improper authorization in GLPI lets an authenticated administrator who holds the delegated 'Update auth and sync' or 'Update auth, sync and 2FA' right (User::UPDATEAUTHENT) change the authentication method and disable two-factor authentication for user accounts that lie outside that administrator's own entity scope. The weakness affects GLPI from 0.84 up to (but not including) 10.0.26, and the 11.x line from 11.0.0 up to but not including 11.0.8; it is only meaningful in multi-entity installations, since in single-entity deployments the administrator already legitimately controls every account. The impact is bounded to authentication-method changes and 2FA toggling rather than arbitrary account modification, vendor-released patches are available in 10.0.26 and 11.0.8, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patch: upgrade to GLPI 10.0.26 or 11.0.8, which enforce the target user's entity-scoped UPDATE permission before authentication-method changes and 2FA toggles (see the release notes at https://github.com/glpi-project/glpi/releases/tag/10.0.26 and https://github.com/glpi-project/glpi/releases/tag/11.0.8, and the advisory GHSA-2hf7-pw75-7wcp). Upgrading is the only complete fix because the flaw is an authorization-check omission in administrative code paths (user.form.php, Auth::showSynchronizationForm, User::processMassiveActionsForOneItemtype, and related LDAP/group flows) that cannot be remedied by configuration alone. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to tighten the delegated right itself: audit which profiles carry the 'Update auth and sync' or 'Update auth, sync and 2FA' right (User::UPDATEAUTHENT) and remove it from any administrator whose entity scope does not fully cover the users they administer - the trade-off is that those administrators lose the ability to manage authentication settings even for their own entities, so the right must be re-granted narrowly. As a secondary measure, restrict network access to GLPI administrative endpoints (login and the user administration front controllers) to trusted management networks, and enable GLPI's audit/logging so unexpected authtype or 2FA changes on out-of-scope accounts can be detected; neither measure removes the underlying defect, and both still leave a legitimate in-scope administrator able to perform the same actions within their own scope. Administrators should also review 2FA enforcement on accounts outside their entity after patching, since a previously exploited or misused instance could have left users with two-factor authentication silently disabled.

Technical ContextAI · show details
GLPI implements a multi-entity organizational model in which every user account, group, and asset belongs to an entity, and permissions such as READ and UPDATE are evaluated against the target object's entity and recursive scope rather than merely against the actor's global profile. The root cause is CWE-285 (Improper Authorization): several administrative code paths validated only the actor's broad UPDATEAUTHENT rightname (Session::haveRight('user', User::UPDATEAUTHENT)) and then acted on a supplied user ID without calling the target object's own can($id, UPDATE) / check($id, UPDATE) authorization. The upstream fix confirms this shape - front/user.form.php now calls $user->check($_POST['id'], UPDATE) before acting; Auth::showSynchronizationForm() adds && $user->can($user->getID(), READ); User::processMassiveActionsForOneItemtype() replaced a single bulk changeAuthMethod($ids, ...) call with a per-ID loop that first tests $user->can($id, UPDATE) and returns ACTION_NORIGHT otherwise; and the previous blanket UPDATEAUTHENT gate inside User::changeAuthMethod() was removed, moving enforcement to the caller on a per-target basis. Related hardening in Group.php (an added $this->can($this->getID(), UPDATE) check on showLDAPForm) and AuthLDAP.php (per-entity CREATE checks in massive actions) shows the same 'check the target's scope, not just the actor's rightname' correction applied across the LDAP authentication and group synchronization surfaces. The audited CVSS v3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:L/A:N describes a network-reachable, low-complexity attack requiring high privileges (the delegated UPDATEAUTHENT right is non-default), no user interaction, scope change because the attacker acts on objects outside their authority, and limited integrity impact limited to authentication settings.

GLPI is a free asset and IT management software package. From 0.84 until 10.0.26 and 11.0.8, an administrator holding the Update auth and sync or Update auth, sync and 2FA right can change the authentication method and disable two-factor authentication for user accounts outside the administrator's entity scope. The affected user-account administration flow did not consistently enforce the target user's entity-scoped update permission. This issue is fixed in versions 11.0.8 and 10.0.26.
