MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the RabbitMQ management plugin to be configured with management.oauth_enabled=true - this makes the OAuth bootstrap endpoint reachable before authentication. The Authorization-header path requires the attacker to cause a victim's browser to submit an attacker-controlled bearer token that is reflected unescaped into the bootstrap JavaScript; the alternative cookie path additionally requires the attacker to first plant an access_token cookie on the management host (e.g., via a same-site sibling/subdomain or prior foothold). Active victim interaction (loading the affected management UI page) is required (UI:A). Limiting factors: non-default OAuth configuration, the extra cookie-planting prerequisite for that vector, and dependence on a victim admin session for meaningful impact. Affected versions are 4.2.0 through 4.2.7 and 4.3.0/4.3.1; fixed in 4.2.8 and 4.3.2. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditionally-gated reflected XSS (CWE-79) in the RabbitMQ management UI, and the raw 7.5 CVSS 4.0 score somewhat overstates the real-world priority. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) already encodes two dampeners the base score partly hides: AT:P (a specific attack requirement - the deployment must have management.oauth_enabled=true) and UI:A (active victim interaction is required). PR:N is technically correct because the OAuth bootstrap endpoint is reachable pre-authentication, but only in that OAuth-enabled configuration. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation - the fix is confirmed only by the vendor advisory and commits. The VC:H/VI:H/VA:H rating reflects that attacker JavaScript runs in the management UI origin (potential admin-session/credential theft and actions-as-victim), which is plausible for a broker admin console, though 'high' on all three impact dimensions is aggressive for what is fundamentally a client-side script-injection bug with no direct server confidentiality/integrity/availability compromise. Net: treat as a real bug to patch on OAuth-enabled management deployments, but not an internet-wide emergency - closer to a targeted, config-dependent issue than a mass-exploitation candidate. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a request/link that causes a bearer token with embedded JavaScript to be reflected into the OAuth bootstrap script of a RabbitMQ management UI that has management.oauth_enabled=true; when an admin's browser processes it (Authorization header path), or after the attacker plants a malicious access_token cookie on the management host (cookie path), the unescaped token breaks out of the set_token_auth('...') call and executes in the management UI origin. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, though the fix commit clearly reveals the injection point. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in the RabbitMQ management UI lets an attacker execute arbitrary JavaScript in the management interface origin by injecting content into a bearer token that is embedded unescaped in the OAuth bootstrap script generated by set_token_auth/2. RabbitMQ server 4.2.0 through 4.2.7 and 4.3.0/4.3.1 are affected only when the management plugin is configured with management.oauth_enabled=true, which is what exposes the OAuth bootstrap endpoint before authentication; the attacker must also induce an administrator to load the affected page (UI:R), and the cookie-based variant additionally requires the attacker to first plant an access_token cookie on the management host. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 base score of 7.5 is higher than our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N), which better reflects the non-default configuration gate and the extra cookie-planting prerequisite; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade RabbitMQ to 4.2.8 or 4.3.2, which contain the escaping fix (rabbit_json:encode) in rabbit_mgmt_oauth_bootstrap.erl; see https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server/security/advisories/GHSA-2rf7-f6r6-8rwh and the release notes at https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server/releases/tag/v4.2.8 and https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server/releases/tag/v4.3.2. Vendor-released patches exist for both maintained branches, so no long-term compensating control is required once upgrades are applied. Where immediate upgrades are not possible, setting management.oauth_enabled=false removes the pre-authentication exposure of the bootstrap endpoint entirely, but it disables OAuth-based login for the management UI and forces users onto another authentication mechanism. Restricting management UI and HTTP API access to trusted administrative networks (bind to loopback or place behind an authenticated reverse proxy) reduces reachability but does not fix the injection and complicates legitimate remote administration. Because the cookie variant of the attack depends on an attacker first planting an access_token cookie on the management host, hardening cookie scoping (host-only cookies, no wildcard parent-domain cookies, TLS-only management endpoints) and eliminating sibling/subdomain origins that could set cookies on the management host raises the bar for that vector, though the Authorization-header path can still be delivered via victim interaction and is only fully closed by upgrading.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a classic CWE-79 improper neutralization of input during web page generation (cross-site scripting) in the Erlang module deps/rabbitmq_management/src/rabbit_mgmt_oauth_bootstrap.erl, which serves the JavaScript bootstrap used by the RabbitMQ management UI when OAuth 2.0 login is enabled (management.oauth_enabled=true). In the vulnerable code path, set_token_auth/2 read a bearer token from either the Authorization header or an access_token cookie and concatenated it directly into a single-quoted JavaScript call, ['set_token_auth(''', Token, ''');'], without escaping. Any token content containing a single quote and script syntax therefore breaks out of the string literal and executes in the management UI origin. The upstream fix replaces the raw interpolation with rabbit_json:encode(Token) so the token is emitted as a properly JSON-encoded JavaScript literal, which is reflected in the two referenced commits (5cd6d841d84450324a4613501ed917d98828af23 and a8041d528c1a71af4cb75ade247ed082fe6b83fb). The affected component is tracked under CPE cpe:2.3:a:rabbitmq:rabbitmq-server, an Erlang/OTP broker whose management plugin exposes an HTTP API and web console; because the bootstrap endpoint is reachable pre-authentication only in the OAuth configuration, the practical exposure is limited to deployments that have enabled optional OAuth integration.

2DescriptionCVE.org
RabbitMQ is a messaging and streaming broker. From 4.2.0 until 4.2.8 and 4.3.2, set_token_auth/2 inserted a bearer token from the Authorization header or access_token cookie into OAuth bootstrap JavaScript without escaping, allowing attacker-controlled token content to execute JavaScript in the management UI origin. The endpoint is exposed before authentication only when management.oauth_enabled is true, and exploitation through the cookie path additionally requires the attacker to plant an access_token cookie on the management host. This issue is fixed in versions 4.2.8 and 4.3.2.

Executive ViewAI
RabbitMQ server versions 4.2.0 through 4.2.7 and 4.3.0/4.3.1 with the management plugin's OAuth integration enabled contain a reflected cross-site scripting flaw that could let an attacker run malicious scripts in an administrator's browser session, potentially leading to unauthorized access to messaging infrastructure. The vulnerability is unauthenticated but requires a non-default configuration (management.oauth_enabled=true) and an administrator to load a crafted page, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Leadership should direct teams to verify whether OAuth is enabled on their RabbitMQ deployments and ensure management interfaces are not exposed to untrusted networks.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable management.oauth_enabled if not essential; restrict access to the management UI to trusted networks and administrators; enforce multi-factor authentication and strong session management; monitor management UI logs for anomalous requests; educate administrators about phishing and untrusted links; consider WAF rules to block malicious token payloads; and apply network segmentation to limit exposure.
