Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires local access to a system running an affected Linux kernel and the ability to write to the EDAC device's 'poll_msec' sysfs attribute (under the EDAC device sysfs path). The concrete trigger is writing a 0-delay value - or, on 64-bit systems, a value larger than UINT_MAX that silently truncated under the old simple_strtoul() parsing - which makes the EDAC poll work item spin without delay. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: the attack is local only (no network vector), it affects only systems where the EDAC subsystem is active and exposes this device sysfs interface, and in practice the poll_msec sysfs file is root-writable, so an unprivileged user typically cannot reach it despite the input's PR:L rating.

Impact

This is a low-to-moderate priority, local-only availability bug, not a high-impact security issue despite the A:H component. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 5.5 MEDIUM) describes a local, low-complexity, privileged-but-non-interactive attack with impact limited purely to availability - no confidentiality or integrity loss. All exploitation signals point the same way and are consistent: EPSS is 0.16% (4th percentile), there is NO CISA KEV listing, and NO public exploit code is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The low EPSS aligns with the local-access requirement and niche attack surface (the EDAC device sysfs interface), indicating this is realistically a stability/hardening fix rather than an actively targeted vulnerability. One notable discrepancy: the input CVSS uses PR:L, but writing to the EDAC poll_msec sysfs attribute normally requires root (sysfs attributes are typically root-writable), so the practical privilege barrier is likely higher than PR:L suggests - verify the actual sysfs file permissions in your deployment. Additionally, the 'Information Disclosure' tag conflicts with the CVSS impact profile (C:N/I:N/A:H), which is pure availability; this tag appears mislabeled. Net assessment: deploy the patch through normal kernel update cycles; this does not warrant emergency out-of-band patching.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user with the ability to write to the EDAC device's poll_msec sysfs attribute writes a value of 0 (or, on 64-bit systems, a value above UINT_MAX that truncates toward a very small number), causing the EDAC polling work item to re-queue with no delay. The poll work then spins continuously, consuming 100% of a CPU and degrading system availability. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires local privileged access rather than remote reach.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026

Denial of service in the Linux kernel EDAC subsystem can be triggered by writing an out-of-range or zero value to the per-device poll_msec sysfs attribute. The store handler uses simple_strtoul() while the target field is an unsigned int, so on 64-bit systems values above UINT_MAX are silently truncated, and a value below 1 was not rejected; either case can make the EDAC poll work item run without delay and consume CPU. This is a local-only availability issue that in practice requires privileged write access to a typically root-owned sysfs file; EPSS is low (0.16%), and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Linux 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7, and 7.3-rc2 contain the fix; upstream fix commits include https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/ea01c061d839b520f385f112908de1c6e3391327, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/528052af901d6e6bbfa0e52362a70a58a5dd1e43, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/0e022ee4f8e0dc843ba4c80bb75408a7704279af, and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/66cc9dec919dd63d8e4b3d386f7aed3ae684e645. Reboot into the updated kernel and verify the running version. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict write access to the EDAC poll_msec sysfs attribute to root or trusted administrators and audit for non-root write permissions; this blocks the local trigger but does not remove the truncation bug. As a compensating control, avoid EDAC polling or set a safe non-zero poll_msec only through trusted administration, accepting reduced error-monitoring coverage, and monitor for unexpected CPU saturation from EDAC work.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The EDAC (Error Detection and Correction) subsystem exposes device attributes through sysfs, including poll_msec, which controls how often the EDAC poll work item runs. The bug is an integer-width and input-validation mismatch: simple_strtoul() parses into unsigned long, but poll_msec is unsigned int, so 64-bit kernels accept values larger than UINT_MAX and then truncate them on assignment; the absence of a lower-bound check also allowed 0. The result is an unintended zero or very small polling interval, causing busy workqueue execution and CPU-consumption denial of service. CPE data identifies the Linux kernel (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux) as the affected product; exploitation is local and, per the independent assessment, requires high privileges (PR:H) because the poll_msec file is normally root-writable and only systems with the EDAC device sysfs interface are exposed. CWE was not supplied, but the class is improper input validation and integer truncation.

DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

EDAC/device_sysfs: Use kstrtouint() for poll_msec to prevent truncation

The poll_msec sysfs store file uses simple_strtoul() which accepts an unsigned long, but the target field (poll_msec) is unsigned int. On 64-bit systems, a value > UINT_MAX is silently truncated when stored.

Fix the mismatch by using kstrtouint() instead. This rejects values larger than UINT_MAX at parse time, making truncation impossible. Also add a check for value < 1 to reject the 0-delay case, which would cause the poll work to spin without delay and consume 100% CPU.
