Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the host to have an AFS (Andrew File System) volume mounted using the kernel afs/rxrpc stack, and an AFS fileserver address-list refresh (afs_fs_probe_fileserver) that removes a peer, concurrent with an incoming RxRPC callback that still pins the old peer after the server object is RCU-freed. Exploitation is bounded by this multi-event timing race (AC:H) which is not directly attacker-steerable, and by the fact that AFS is an uncommon deployment; there is no single-request network trigger despite the AV:N in the NVD vector. |
| Impact | This is a Linux kernel use-after-free (effectively CWE-416; CVE feed lists CWE as N/A) in the AFS filesystem client's peer/endpoint address-refresh logic, resolved upstream. NVD's 7.5 CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) with full C:H/I:H/A:H overstates real-world risk. The bug is a race between an AFS server address-list replacement, RCU freeing of the server object, and an incoming RxRPC callback that still pins the old peer and dereferences its freed app_data - none of these steps are attacker-controlled in the classic remote sense, so AC:H is warranted but PR:N/AV:N/C:H/I:H are generous. The realistic impact is a KASAN-detected slab-use-after-free leading to a crash (DoS); the C:H/I:H claims are not supported by the description, which shows only a read of a freed 4-byte field feeding afs_find_server/afs_use_server. Prioritization signals are weak: no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit - so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified.' This is a low-priority, patch-in-normal-cycle kernel hardening fix for the niche subset of systems that actually mount AFS, not an urgent network-exploitable RCE despite the high headline CVSS. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a host with a mounted AFS volume, a fileserver address refresh replaces server S's address list without clearing the old peer's app_data; after S is freed via its RCU callback, an incoming RxRPC callback that still references the old peer reads its stale app_data and invokes afs_use_server()/afs_find_server() on the freed object, tripping a slab-use-after-free and likely crashing the kernel. Triggering this reliably requires winning a narrow teardown/refresh timing window rather than sending a single crafted packet, and no public exploit or POC exists. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel AFS filesystem client's peer address-refresh logic allows a crash or, potentially, limited memory corruption when an AFS fileserver endpoint list is refreshed while an inbound RxRPC callback still holds the old peer. The bug arises because afs_fs_probe_fileserver() fetches endpoint state with old_alist left NULL, so afs_set_peer_appdata() treats every list replacement as initial setup, binds the new peers but never unbinds the removed ones; a peer (Pold) is then freed by the server's RCU callback while still pinned through an RxRPC connection, and a later callback dereferences the freed server (KASAN slab-use-after-free in afs_find_server). Exploitation requires a host with an AFS volume mounted over the kernel afs/rxrpc stack plus the correct multi-event race between an address-list refresh and an incoming callback, so it is assessed as AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N with bounded impact (C:N/I:L/A:H) rather than the network-reachable NVD vector; no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and the affected footprint is limited to AFS deployments, which are uncommon. Vendor-released patches addressing the flaw are available in the stable trees.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released kernel patches: update to Linux 6.12.111 (fixes 6.12.101 through 6.12.110), 6.18.53, 7.2.7, or 7.3-rc3, or cherry-pick the corresponding stable commits ba0623fc19a424f4745394c499f9f28a8d88d397, 3afb988fd0411707bdafb9b321086fff0da28aae, 7f7f5589d048821dea316cbac9b37d27eaf7530e, and c7f77a11a1e719192c7262aad38a3919aec62c21 from git.kernel.org/stable (also see the NVD record at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-97583 and EUVD-2026-86891). Distros shipping 6.12.x kernels should confirm their backport level, since the fix is a small behavioral change to fs/afs peer app-data handling and is typically carried as a stable update. If patching cannot be scheduled promptly, the practical compensating control is to avoid the affected code path entirely: unmount AFS volumes on untrusted or multi-tenant hosts and avoid kernel AFS use where the endpoint list can be refreshed (for example, during fileserver address changes or DNS/VLDB-driven re-probing); the trade-off is loss of AFS filesystem access on that host. Restricting which users can mount AFS filesystems (for example, via mount namespace/user namespace policy or removing CAP_SYS_ADMIN from untrusted workloads) reduces the PR:L precondition but does not eliminate the race for legitimate AFS users. Because exploitation depends on a timing window between an address-list refresh and an incoming RxRPC callback, no simple firewall or port-blocking rule is an effective substitute for the kernel update.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is the Linux kernel's kAFS client (fs/afs) together with the RxRPC transport. AFS uses RxRPC as its on-the-wire RPC transport, and the client maintains a list of fileserver endpoints for each server object, protected by server->fs_lock. When an address refresh occurs, afs_fs_probe_fileserver() reads the current endpoint state but passes a NULL old_alist, which makes afs_set_peer_appdata() interpret the operation as first-time setup: it binds the newly discovered peers to the server but never unbinds peers that disappeared from the previous list, so Pold keeps a stale app_data pointer back to a server object that is about to be destroyed. Because endpoint state is published under RCU, the server destroyer clears only the server's current peers and the old server object reaches its RCU callback, where it is freed (afs_put_server -> kfree via rcu_core). An in-flight RxRPC connection still pins Pold, so when a callback arrives on that connection CPU 1 reads Pold->app_data and calls afs_use_server() on the already-freed object, producing the reported KASAN slab-use-after-free read of size 4 in afs_find_server (via afs_rx_new_call -> rxrpc_new_incoming_call -> rxrpc_io_thread). In CWE terms this is a use-after-free (CWE-416) rooted in stale cross-object references plus an incomplete rebind/unbind transition; the fix preserves the old address list for the peer app-data update so removed peers are cleared before the endpoint state is swapped, and also advances both list cursors when old and new lists share a peer to avoid an infinite loop on the shared entry once the old/new comparison is activated.

Lifecycle Timeline
4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
afs: Clear stale peer app data after address list changes
afs_fs_probe_fileserver() fetches the current endpoint state under server->fs_lock, but leaves old_alist as NULL. Consequently, afs_set_peer_appdata() treats every address list replacement as initial setup and only binds the new peers; it never unbinds peers removed from the old list.
An address refresh can therefore proceed as follows. CPU 0 replaces server S's list and drops Pold without clearing Pold->app_data. The server destroyer then clears only S's current peers and lets S reach its RCU callback. After the callback frees S, CPU 1 handles a callback through an RxRPC connection that still pins Pold, reads Pold->app_data, and calls afs_use_server() on the freed object.

Preserve old->addresses for the peer app-data update so that removed peers are cleared before the endpoint state is replaced. Also advance both cursors when the old and new lists share a peer; activating the old/new comparison without this would otherwise loop forever on the shared entry.
Executive ViewAI
A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's AFS filesystem client can crash or potentially corrupt memory on systems with AFS volumes mounted. The issue is assessed as a high-severity local flaw requiring authenticated access and a complex race condition, with no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Patch available per vendor advisory; leadership should ensure Linux endpoints and servers using AFS are promptly patched to prevent denial-of-service or limited integrity impact.
Apply vendor patch.
