Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a vulnerable form whose admin-authored confirmation message embeds the {page_title} Smart Tag inside an HTML attribute context - this is a non-default authoring configuration, so many WPForms deployments are not exploitable. Attack is remote and unauthenticated (PR:N) but requires user interaction (UI:R): the victim must be tricked into an action such as clicking a crafted link that submits the malicious 'page_title' POST value. Affected: all WPForms AI Form Builder versions up to and including 2.0.2. Impact is limited to script execution in the victim's browser context (scope change), not the server.

Impact

This is a genuine but modest-severity reflected XSS (CWE-79) in WPForms, one of the most widely deployed WordPress form plugins. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N = 6.1 Medium) correctly captures the shape: network-reachable, unauthenticated, but requiring victim interaction (UI:R) and yielding only limited confidentiality/integrity impact scoped to the victim's browser session. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public proof-of-concept are present in the provided data, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The single most important risk-limiting signal is NOT in the raw CVSS: the description explicitly states the flaw is 'only exploitable on forms whose admin-authored confirmation message places the {page_title} Smart Tag inside an HTML attribute context' - a non-default authoring choice that dramatically shrinks the exploitable population below the plugin's install base. Net: despite the large footprint, this is a lower-priority, interaction-and-configuration-gated reflected XSS rather than a wormable or mass-exploitable issue. Patch is available (Wordfence-reported, fixed in versions after 2.0.2 per trac changeset 3709178), so prioritize normal patch cycles.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious URL to a vulnerable WPForms-hosted form page, embedding a JavaScript payload in the 'page_title' POST parameter that is reflected via the {page_title} Smart Tag into an HTML attribute inside the form's confirmation message. The attacker phishes a logged-in site user or admin into submitting/clicking the crafted link; on execution the script runs in the victim's browser session, enabling session/cookie theft or actions in the victim's context. No public PoC is identified, and success depends on the target form being configured with the Smart Tag in an attribute context and on the victim performing the action (UI:R).

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

Reflected cross-site scripting in the WPForms - AI Form Builder for WordPress plugin (versions up to and including 2.0.2) allows unauthenticated remote attackers to inject arbitrary JavaScript into a victim's browser by submitting a crafted 'page_title' POST value, which is then rendered unescaped through the {page_title} Smart Tag. Exploitation is conditional: it only works on forms where an administrator has deliberately placed the {page_title} Smart Tag inside an HTML attribute context within the form's confirmation message, so many default WPForms deployments are not exploitable. The attack requires user interaction (UI:R) - the victim must be tricked into clicking a crafted link or otherwise submitting the malicious POST value - and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV confirmation of active exploitation; impact is limited to script execution in the victim's browser session (scope change), not server compromise.

RemediationAI

Apply the upstream fix reflected by the wpforms-lite changeset 3709178, referenced at https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?reponame=&old=3709178%40wpforms-lite&new=3709178%40wpforms-lite - note that no exact tagged patched version number is confirmed in the available data, so treat this as an upstream fix/commit rather than a confirmed release label and verify the current plugin version from the vendor before deploying. Until a confirmed patched release is installed, the most effective compensating control is to remove or refactor the {page_title} Smart Tag from any confirmation message where it sits inside an HTML attribute context (for example within value="", href="", title="", or similar attributes); moving the tag into plain text/HTML body content, or dropping it entirely, removes the injection path, with the trade-off that the confirmation message loses the dynamic page-title value. Administrators can also restrict the use of the Smart Tag in confirmation messages site-wide via editorial policy or by customizing the confirmation template, though this may reduce form personalization. Keep WPForms updated to the latest available version; review the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/0a10570c-542a-494c-9dea-96a58b91139e?source=cve for updated fixed-version guidance. As general hardening, deploy a web application firewall or WordPress security plugin rule that blocks or escapes crafted 'page_title' POST values containing HTML metacharacters, but treat this only as a temporary mitigation since WAF signature bypasses are common for reflected XSS, and avoid relying on it as a substitute for the vendor fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue is a classic CWE-79 improper neutralization of input during web page generation (reflected XSS) in the WordPress plugin WPForms - AI Form Builder for WordPress - Contact Forms, Payment Forms, Survey Form, Quiz & More. WPForms implements a templating layer of "Smart Tags" - placeholders such as {page_title} that are substituted at render time with dynamic values - and the plugin code paths in src/SmartTags/SmartTag/PageTitle.php, src/SmartTags/SmartTags.php, src/Frontend/Classic.php and includes/class-process.php handle the substitution and output. The 'page_title' value is accepted from the POST request, passed into the Smart Tag resolution logic, and then written into the confirmation message markup without adequate sanitization/escaping. When the administrator-authored confirmation message places {page_title} inside an HTML attribute context (for example inside a value="...", href="...", or similar attribute), the unescaped value can break out of the attribute and inject event handlers or script elements. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N confirms a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated path that requires victim interaction, with a scope change because the injected script executes in the context of the affected page/site rather than the plugin's own trust boundary. Affected CPE data identifies the plugin package family (cpe:2.3:a:smub:wpforms_-_ai_form_builder_for_wordpress_-_contact_forms,_payment_forms,_survey_form,_quiz_&_more).

DescriptionCVE.org

The WPForms - AI Form Builder for WordPress - Contact Forms, Payment Forms, Survey Form, Quiz & More plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via 'page_title' POST Parameter via {page_title} Smart Tag in all versions up to, and including, 2.0.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. This is only exploitable on forms whose admin-authored confirmation message places the {page_title} Smart Tag inside an HTML attribute context.
