Exploitation Conditions

Requires the non-default configuration $wgEmbedVideoRequireConsent to be DISABLED - the advisory states this is not the default, so out-of-the-box installations are not affected. The attacker must be able to insert an EmbedVideo parser function/tag (#ev or an embed tag) into wiki content, i.e. hold page-edit capability, and supply a malformed URL/id containing a double quote to escape the iframe src attribute. Exploitation is limited to affected EmbedVideo versions prior to 4.1.0, and as stored XSS it further depends on another user rendering the poisoned page for the injected script to fire.

Impact

The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N = 7.5) is internally inconsistent with the vulnerability class. This is a stored HTML/JavaScript injection (CWE-79 XSS) in a wiki page, yet the vector shows C:H/I:N/A:N with no scope change and no user interaction - an atypical profile for reflected/stored XSS, which usually yields C:L/I:L with S:C. The single most important limiting signal is buried in the description: exploitation requires $wgEmbedVideoRequireConsent to be DISABLED, which the advisory explicitly states is NOT the default. That makes real-world exposure materially narrower than the 7.5 score implies. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC in the supplied intelligence, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation - this is a code-fix advisory (GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-v65j-hff3-753c) with a confirmed patch commit, not an emergent threat. Net: treat as a real but non-urgent hardening priority for the subset of MediaWiki sites running EmbedVideo with consent-requirement turned off. Verify the auth/UI assumptions with the vendor - the description implies an attacker must edit a page and a victim must view it, which contradicts the PR:N/UI:N in the input vector.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a wiki running EmbedVideo with $wgEmbedVideoRequireConsent disabled, an attacker who can edit a page inserts an #ev parser function (or embed tag) with a malformed video URL/id crafted to contain a double quote, breaking out of the iframe src attribute. The injected attribute/markup is stored and rendered to every subsequent viewer, executing attacker JavaScript in their browser session. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the injection technique is described plainly in the advisory and the fixing commit.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 24, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the StarCitizenWiki MediaWiki EmbedVideo extension (all versions prior to 4.1.0) allows a wiki editor to inject arbitrary HTML and JavaScript into pages by supplying a malformed video URL or ID whose embedded double quote escapes the src attribute of the generated iframe. Exploitation requires the non-default configuration $wgEmbedVideoRequireConsent to be disabled, so stock installations are unaffected, and it further requires the ability to insert an #ev parser function or embed tag into wiki content (page-edit rights) plus a victim rendering the poisoned page for the payload to fire. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and there is no CISA KEV entry; note that the CVSS 3.1 vector published in the CVE record (7.5, PR:N/UI:N/S:U) does not match the actual prerequisites, and the authoritative assessed vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade the EmbedVideo extension to version 4.1.0 (commit 370156335b325bb81d14d89edf0a1f2643d50a84), per the advisory at https://github.com/StarCitizenWiki/mediawiki-extensions-EmbedVideo/security/advisories/GHSA-v65j-hff3-753c. If upgrade is not immediately possible, the most direct compensating control is to ensure $wgEmbedVideoRequireConsent is enabled (its default state) in LocalSettings.php, which removes the unsanitized embedding path the advisory attributes to this issue - the trade-off is that users must click through a consent overlay before any video loads, changing site UX and blocking automatic third-party embeds; sites that deliberately disabled consent for usability reasons must accept that exposure until they patch. Because exploitation requires the ability to place an #ev call or embed tag in wiki content, reduce the population of accounts able to edit pages or transclude extension tags (tighten the editor/autoconfirmed rights, protect high-traffic or transcluded templates via page protection, and review recent edits and template/MediaWiki-namespace revisions for injected double quotes or script markup), accepting that this constrains legitimate editorial workflow. Additional hardening: deploy a Content-Security-Policy that blocks inline script execution (which may break other wiki gadgets and extensions) and audit logs for anomalous iframe-attribute content. No vendor-released workaround short of upgrading or enabling consent is documented.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The EmbedVideo extension adds the #ev parser function and related parser tags to MediaWiki so editors can embed clips from external video services. The root cause is CWE-79 (improper neutralization of input during web page generation): in includes/EmbedService/EmbedHtmlFormatter.php the extension assembled presentation markup through raw string concatenation and sprintf, writing service-supplied values directly into an iframe src attribute and interpolating the description/caption, thumbnail URL and title into hand-written HTML heredocs. Because attribute values were quoted with double quotes but never escaped, an attacker who controls the video URL or ID can terminate the src attribute with a double quote and append arbitrary attributes or markup, yielding HTML/JavaScript injection. The official fix (commit 370156335b325bb81d14d89edf0a1f2643d50a84, shipped in 4.1.0) removes the string-built templates and routes all output through MediaWiki's safe primitives - Html::element()/Html::rawElement() for the iframe, picture, img and thumbnail divs, and TemplateParser (Mustache) with MessageValue/Message objects for the wrapper and consent container - so values are HTML-escaped by construction. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:starcitizenwiki:mediawiki-extensions-embedvideo. The discrepancy between the CVE-record vector (PR:N/UI:N, an isolated confidentiality impact) and the actual stored-XSS mechanics (editor-supplied input, victim interaction, scoped context change) indicates the published vector is internally inconsistent with the vulnerability class and should not be relied upon for risk scoring.

DescriptionCVE.org

The EmbedVideo Extension is a MediaWiki extension which adds a parser function called #ev and various parser tags for embedding video clips from various video sharing services. Prior to 4.1.0, with $wgEmbedVideoRequireConsent disabled (not the default), the urls for videos are passed into an iframe src attribute without sanitization. When given a malformed url or id, the src attribute can be escaped via double quotes, allowing for html/javascript injection. Version 4.1.0 contains a patch.

Technical POC Analysis

CWE-79 (advisory also tags CWE-80): the EmbedVideo MediaWiki extension writes an attacker-influenced video URL into the src attribute of a generated <iframe without HTML-escaping it.

Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

The StarCitizenWiki MediaWiki EmbedVideo extension (all versions prior to 4.1.0) contains a stored cross-site scripting flaw that can allow an authenticated editor to inject malicious scripts into wiki pages viewed by other users. This risk is limited to custom deployments where $wgEmbedVideoRequireConsent is disabled, meaning stock installations are unaffected. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but leadership should prioritize exposure assessment for non-default wiki configurations.

Business Impact: Medium
Compensating Controls

Set $wgEmbedVideoRequireConsent to true; restrict page-edit and #ev/embed-tag insertion rights to trusted users; review wiki content for malformed video URLs or embedded double quotes; monitor edit logs for suspicious activity. No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis.
