| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an enrolled Wazuh agent (PR:L) that submits a Windows EventChannel event containing an XML element with a very large number of attributes; the malformed event is then parsed by the analysisd worker thread. Affects Wazuh 3.8.0 through 4.14.6 (fixed in 4.14.7). Limiting factors: the attacker must already control or compromise a legitimately enrolled agent (not a fully unauthenticated external attacker), no user interaction is needed, and the impact is confined to availability - crashing the analysisd worker and halting log ingestion, with no data read or modified. The pre-existing _ReadElem() element-depth limit does NOT mitigate it because it bounds element nesting, not attribute count on a single element. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity denial-of-service issue, not a high-priority emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 6.5) is internally consistent with CWE-674 uncontrolled recursion: network-reachable, low complexity, but requiring low privilege (PR:L) and yielding availability impact only - no confidentiality or integrity loss. The 'low privilege' is meaningful: the attacker must control an already-enrolled Wazuh agent, so this is an insider/compromised-endpoint threat rather than a fully external one. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. The 'Information Disclosure' tag directly contradicts the CVSS vector (C:N) and the DoS-only mechanism, and the 'Microsoft' tag misattributes the vendor (Wazuh is the affected open-source product; Windows is only the source of the malicious EventChannel event). Net: a real but bounded reliability/availability risk to the SIEM pipeline itself, worth patching promptly because a downed analysisd silently stops log ingestion, but not a drop-everything scenario. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who controls or has compromised an enrolled Wazuh agent crafts a Windows EventChannel event whose XML element carries an extremely large number of attributes. When the analysisd worker thread parses it, _getattributes() recurses once per attribute while allocating two large stack buffers per frame, exhausting the thread stack and triggering a segmentation fault that halts log ingestion. No public exploit code was identified, but the condition is straightforward to reproduce and the fix's unit test (test_too_many_attributes) demonstrates the trigger. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 24, 2026
Recursive XML attribute parsing in Wazuh (src/os_xml/os_xml.c) can exhaust the analysisd worker-thread stack, causing a segmentation fault that halts log ingestion on the affected manager. An attacker who controls a legitimately enrolled Wazuh agent (authenticated, PR:L) can trigger this by having that agent forward a Windows EventChannel event containing a single XML element with a very large number of attributes, which analysisd then parses. All Wazuh versions from 3.8.0 through 4.14.6 are affected; the issue is fixed in 4.14.7, there is no indication of confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV), and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. Impact is availability-only - the worker crashes and ingestion stops, but no data is read, modified, or exposed.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Wazuh Manager to 4.14.7 or later, which is the version that introduces the XML_MAX_ATTR_DEPTH limit of 48 in _getattributes() and the accompanying 'XMLERR: Too many attributes.' rejection (see GHSA-9wv5-7qwx-m9w5, PR 37147, and https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/releases/tag/v4.14.7). Deploy the upgrade to every manager node that runs analysisd, since the vulnerable parser is in the ingestion path. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to treat agent enrolment as a trust boundary: audit enrolled agents, promptly remove or revoke credentials for decommissioned, abandoned, or compromised agents, and require certificate-based agent authentication so an arbitrary host cannot inject crafted Windows EventChannel events - the trade-off is added enrolment/support overhead and the need to re-key any agents using legacy auth. As a secondary measure, tightly scope which agents are permitted to forward Windows EventChannel data (disabling or filtering the eventchannel decoder on the manager for agents that do not legitimately need it) reduces the attack surface, at the cost of losing that telemetry. Finally, monitor analysisd for unexpected restarts, worker-thread crashes, or gaps in log ingestion and correlate them with agent-submitted events containing unusually large attribute counts, so that a crash-loop can be detected and the offending agent isolated quickly; this detection does not prevent the crash itself. No patch beyond 4.14.7 is required, and no exact-version backports for the 3.x/4.x maintenance lines were identified in the supplied data.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is rooted in the Wazuh XML reader used by analysisd, specifically the _getattributes() routine in src/os_xml/os_xml.c, which parses attributes belonging to an XML element. Because attribute parsing is implemented recursively and each invocation allocates two large local buffers on the stack, an element carrying an arbitrarily large attribute count produces unbounded recursion depth and linear stack growth - a classic CWE-674 (Uncontrolled Recursion) resource-exhaustion pattern. The existing _ReadElem() element-depth guard bounds element nesting only, not the number of attributes on a single element, so it provides no protection here. The upstream fix (PR 37147, commit 2ac70941c5980a5dd24ad8a0f2be559f840e6a67) threads a depth counter through _getattributes() and rejects input once depth exceeds the new XML_MAX_ATTR_DEPTH constant of 48, returning the error 'XMLERR: Too many attributes.'; a unit test (test_too_many_attributes) was added alongside. The affected component is reachable from the Windows EventChannel log-decoding path, meaning the attack surface is the agent-to-manager event ingestion channel rather than a direct network service. The supplied CPE (cpe:2.3:a:wazuh:wazuh:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a wildcard and does not pin versions, so the authoritative affected range is the one stated in the advisory: 3.8.0 <= version < 4.14.7.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Wazuh is an open-source security platform providing unified XDR and SIEM protection for endpoints and cloud workloads. From 3.8.0 until 4.14.7, the _getattributes() function in src/os_xml/os_xml.c recursively processes every XML attribute without a depth limit while allocating two large local buffers in each stack frame. An enrolled agent can submit a Windows EventChannel event containing an element with enough attributes to exhaust the analysisd worker-thread stack, trigger a segmentation fault, and interrupt log ingestion. The element-depth limit in _ReadElem() does not constrain the number of attributes on one element, so it does not prevent this condition. This issue is fixed in version 4.14.7.
