Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires local access to a system running the Linux kernel iwlwifi PCIe driver (Intel WiFi hardware present and driver loaded). The defective code path is reached only when iwl_pcie_tx_init() fails AFTER RX initialization has already succeeded during nic init, causing iwl_pcie_rx_free() to unwind while leaving rx_pool/global_table/rxq/alloc_page non-NULL; the dangling pointers only cause harm on a subsequent teardown or re-init/retry. Limiting factors: the init-failure trigger is an internal error path not directly attacker-controlled, exploitation is local only (AV:L) with high complexity (AC:H) and requires existing low privileges (PR:L), and affected systems are those on kernels before 6.12.111 / 6.18.53 / 7.2 that have not applied the fix. |
| Impact | This is a classic Linux kernel error-path hardening fix in the iwlwifi PCIe transport, and the intelligence signals point to LOW real-world risk despite the 7.0 (High) CVSS score. The NVD/Linux 3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H correctly captures the local vector, high complexity, and required local privileges - but the C:H/I:H/A:H impact triple is very likely overstated: the flaw is stale (non-NULLed) RX pointers left on the live transport object after iwl_pcie_rx_free() runs on a nic-init failure path, which realistically manifests as a use-after-free crash/instability on later teardown or retry rather than a controllable read/write primitive. There is NO EPSS score, NO CISA KEV listing, and NO public exploit code in the input, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Critically, the bug is reachable only through an internal error path (iwl_pcie_tx_init() failing AFTER RX init during nic init) that is not attacker-controlled, further reducing practical risk. CWE is listed as N/A but this is effectively CWE-416/CWE-459 (use-after-free / incomplete cleanup), NOT the 'Information Disclosure' the tag implies. Bottom line: high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk latent hardening fix; prioritize via normal kernel patch cadence, not emergency response. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A local low-privileged user (or a hardware/firmware fault) triggers an iwlwifi nic-init sequence in which TX ring initialization fails after RX rings are already set up, causing iwl_pcie_rx_free() to run while leaving rx_pool, global_table, rxq, and alloc_page pointers dangling. A subsequent teardown or driver re-initialization then dereferences the freed RX state, producing a use-after-free that most plausibly crashes the kernel (DoS). No public POC exists, and the local vector plus high attack complexity (racing/forcing a specific init-failure path) make reliable weaponization difficult. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
The Linux kernel's iwlwifi PCIe transport driver can leave dangling RX pointers (rx_pool, global_table, rxq and alloc_page) on the live transport object after iwl_pcie_rx_free() runs while unwinding a failed iwl_pcie_tx_init(), so a subsequent teardown or driver re-init/retry can touch already-freed RX state. Only systems with Intel WiFi hardware running kernels before 6.12.111, 6.18.53 or 7.2 are affected, and the trigger is an internal nic-init failure path rather than a directly attacker-controlled input, meaning exploitation is local with high complexity and existing low privileges (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L per the assessed vector). There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no KEV confirmation of active exploitation, and while the vendor/NVD score is 7.0 (High), the independent assessment rates this at roughly 3.6 (Low) because only integrity and availability of the device's own error/cleanup path are at stake.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Linux 6.12.111, 6.18.53 or 7.2 (or any later stable/mainline release containing the fixes); the specific stable commits are 6ec5bf430cf7466cb412e47f2761594092781fac, 3456c5bcc987aeb182e50e30c9b02be8420e9953 and 2c79d7a7b583050c9f58041465cb46fe3483ab5d, and distribution vendors should be tracked for their own backported kernel packages. Because the defect is only reachable when iwl_pcie_tx_init() fails after successful RX initialization, there is no clean user-space mitigation that preserves functionality: the only hard workaround is to prevent the driver from loading on affected hosts (for example, blacklisting or unloading the iwlwifi module, or disabling the Intel WiFi device in firmware), which removes wireless connectivity and is a significant operational trade-off. Kernel command-line or module-parameter tweaks do not address the missing pointer reset, and restarting the wireless subsystem merely re-runs the same vulnerable unwind path. Given that no public exploit has been identified and the practical impact is limited to a local, high-complexity error path, prioritized patching during normal kernel maintenance is appropriate rather than emergency action; hosts that cannot be updated quickly should rely on the fact that only local users on the machine, and only under a rare internal init failure, can influence the affected state.

Technical ContextAI · show details
iwlwifi is Intel's mac80211-based wireless driver; its PCIe transport layer (drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi/pcie) manages DMA ring buffers and shared-memory tables for the device firmware, including the RX pool (rx_pool), the firmware global table (global_table), per-queue RX structures (rxq) and allocation pages (alloc_page). During interface/nic initialization, iwl_pcie_tx_init() and RX setup run in sequence; if TX init fails after RX init has already succeeded, the error path calls iwl_pcie_rx_free(), which releases the RX allocations. The defect is a cleanup/state-management flaw: the freed pointers were not cleared, so they remained non-NULL on the still-live transport object and could be dereferenced again by a later teardown, suspend/resume, or re-init retry - the classic dangling-pointer/use-after-free pattern. No CWE identifier was supplied with the source data, but the class is best described as incomplete cleanup leading to potential use-after-free of driver-internal structures; the fix is defensive (NULL out rx_pool, global_table, rxq and alloc_page immediately after freeing them) so repeated cleanup and retry paths become idempotent and safe. The issue is confined to the wireless driver's own data structures rather than core kernel memory management, which is why the independent assessment caps the impact at low integrity/availability with no confidentiality effect.

4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
wifi: iwlwifi: pcie: null RX pointers after free
When iwl_pcie_tx_init() fails after RX init, nic init unwinds via iwl_pcie_rx_free().
The freed RX members stayed non-NULL on the live transport object, so later teardown or retry could touch stale RX state. Set rx_pool, global_table, rxq, and alloc_page to NULL after free to make repeated cleanup and retry paths safe.
Executive ViewAI
Organizations running Linux on endpoints, laptops, or servers with Intel WiFi hardware on kernel versions before 6.12.111, 6.18.53, or 7.2 may experience wireless device instability or crashes from a cleanup flaw in the iwlwifi PCIe driver. Exploitation requires authenticated local access with high complexity, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, so the business risk is primarily to device reliability and availability rather than remote compromise. Leadership should prioritize normal patch-cycle remediation because vendor fixes are available and the residual risk to broader enterprise systems is limited.
