Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires a running kernel version 6.17 or newer that includes the drm/pagemap device-memory migration code, a GPU driver that exercises drm_pagemap migration (SVM / device memory), and local access to trigger GPU memory migration. The bug only manifests on the migration ERROR path - the flawed cleanup order (calling drm_pagemap_migrate_unmap_pages() after drm_pagemap_migration_unlock_put_pages() has already zeroed the pages array) is reached only when a migration failure occurs, so normal successful migrations are unaffected. Limiting factors: local-only access, the error path is not directly attacker-controlled, and the affected subsystem is only present in very recent kernels with specific GPU drivers enabled.

Impact

The input assigns CVSS:3.1 8.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H), which substantially overstates real-world risk for what the patch actually describes. This is a cleanup-ordering defect on a migration ERROR path: drm_pagemap_migrate_unmap_pages() reads the pages array to decide which pages need DMA unmapping, but drm_pagemap_migration_unlock_put_pages() clears that array first, so DMA unmapping is skipped/mishandled. The bug only manifests when a device-memory migration error occurs - a condition not directly attacker-triggerable - so AC:L is optimistic (AC:H is more defensible) and the S:C/C:H/I:H rating is not supported by the description, which points to an improper-DMA-unmap/resource-leak outcome rather than reliable confidentiality/integrity compromise. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit; SSVC would score exploitation=none and automatable=no. Net: no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and despite the high nominal CVSS this is a low-priority hardening/correctness fix for the niche drm/pagemap GPU-migration subsystem, not an urgent patch. The listed CWE is N/A and the 'Information Disclosure' tag is inconsistent with the actual defect (error-path DMA-unmap ordering).

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user runs GPU workloads that trigger device-memory (SVM) page migration on a very recent kernel (6.17+) using a driver built on drm/pagemap; if a migration error is induced, pages may be left improperly DMA-unmapped, risking a DMA/resource leak or memory-state corruption that could crash the system. No public exploit exists and the trigger depends on hitting the migration error path rather than attacker-supplied input, making reliable exploitation impractical.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

Local authenticated users on systems running Linux kernel 6.17 or newer with GPU drivers that exercise drm/pagemap device-memory migration can, on the rare migration-error path, cause DMA mappings to remain after pages are released because drm_pagemap_migrate_unmap_pages() is called after the pages array has been cleared. This can lead to limited integrity and availability impacts within the affected subsystem. The input CVSS of 8.8 substantially overstates the real-world risk; independent assessment rates it 5.3 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L). No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor patch by upgrading to Linux 6.18.53 or 7.3-rc2 (or a later kernel that includes the fix). The specific upstream commits are 9e6372ec2a3990662ae0a67f56ac0aee19848d5b and e4331c6644db85bc6ceb470bd84bcf371b6dbfa6, available at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/9e6372ec2a3990662ae0a67f56ac0aee19848d5b and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/e4331c6644db85bc6ceb470bd84bcf371b6dbfa6. If upgrading is not immediately possible, backport the two-line reordering change (call drm_pagemap_migrate_unmap_pages before drm_pagemap_migration_unlock_put_pages) to your kernel. Compensating controls: restrict local shell access to trusted users, as the vulnerability requires local access; disable GPU device-memory migration by blacklisting or unloading the affected GPU driver (e.g., amdgpu, i915, or nouveau) or disabling SVM in driver parameters-this prevents the error path from being reached but also disables GPU shared memory features. Monitoring for DMA-related errors in dmesg may provide early warning but is not a preventive control. The error path is only triggered on migration failure, so normal operations are not affected.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The drm/pagemap subsystem in the Linux kernel manages page migration for device memory, typically used by GPU drivers implementing Shared Virtual Memory (SVM) or similar features that allow the GPU to access system memory directly. The bug is an improper cleanup ordering: when a migration operation fails, drm_pagemap_migration_unlock_put_pages() clears the pages array as part of releasing resources, and then drm_pagemap_migrate_unmap_pages() is called but sees an empty array, so it skips the necessary DMA unmapping for pages that were already mapped. This leaves stale DMA mappings that could allow a device to access memory after it has been freed or repurposed, potentially causing limited data corruption or availability impact. CWE is not assigned, but the root cause is a logic error in resource teardown (improper cleanup). The code was introduced in Linux 6.17 via commit f86ad0ed620cb3c91ec7d5468e93ac68d727539d and is fixed by commits 9e6372ec2a3990662ae0a67f56ac0aee19848d5b and e4331c6644db85bc6ceb470bd84bcf371b6dbfa6. Exploitation requires the error path to be reached, which is not directly attacker-controlled and requires local access.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/pagemap: dma-unmap pages before handling migration errors

drm_pagemap_migrate_unmap_pages() relies on the pages array to determine which pages require DMA unmapping. However, drm_pagemap_migration_unlock_put_pages() clears the array as part of its cleanup, leaving drm_pagemap_migrate_unmap_pages() with no valid page information if it is called afterward.

Call drm_pagemap_migrate_unmap_pages() before drm_pagemap_migration_unlock_put_pages() so the pages array remains valid during DMA unmapping.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Linux kernel versions 6.17 and later, when paired with certain GPU drivers, contain a flaw in device-memory migration that can leave stale DMA mappings after a rare error, potentially causing data corruption or system instability. Affected organizations include those running these kernels on systems with the relevant GPU hardware; exploitation requires authenticated local access and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the vulnerability could disrupt critical workloads if left unpatched. Leadership should prioritize patching to maintain integrity and availability of affected systems.
