MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated account with organization workflow-admin permission (delegated non-superuser role) and specifically does NOT require any role on the target instance groups - that missing check IS the vulnerability. The attacker must copy an existing WorkflowJobTemplate whose nodes are already pinned to a privileged instance group (notably the control-plane instance group); the deep-copy permission sanitizer validates only inventory, unified_job_template, and credentials while preserving instance_groups, execution_environment, and labels unchecked. Limiting factors: the attacker needs the workflow-admin role to copy and administer workflows, and a source workflow referencing a privileged/control-plane instance group must exist to be cloned. No user interaction and no non-default configuration are needed beyond a normal multi-tenant automation-controller deployment. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority vulnerability, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk case. The Red Hat-provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H = 9.9) is internally consistent with the description: the flaw is remotely reachable over the automation-controller API, needs only low privilege (an organization workflow-admin, which is a delegated non-superuser role), requires no user interaction, and the scope change (S:C) correctly reflects that a user confined to their organization escalates into the shared control-plane execution context. Because attacker-influenced automation runs inside the control plane - which holds SECRET_KEY, database credentials, and other tenants' secrets - the full C:H/I:H/A:H impact is justified. Countervailing signals: no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so exploitation probability data is absent rather than low. The CWE-862 (missing authorization) root cause combined with a purely logic-level bug (no memory corruption, deterministic to trigger) makes this highly automatable once understood. Note the tag 'Authentication Bypass' conflicts with CWE-862, which is an AUTHORIZATION flaw - verify categorization. No fix version is stated in the provided data; consult Red Hat advisory RHSA/errata for the patched automation-controller release. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker holding only an organization-level workflow-admin role (no permission on any instance group) copies an existing WorkflowJobTemplate; the deep-copy sanitizer re-validates inventory, job template, and credentials but silently preserves the original nodes' instance_groups, so the clone remains pinned to privileged groups. The attacker, now administrator of the copy, launches it against the control-plane instance group and executes attacker-influenced automation in the control-plane execution context, bypassing the InstanceGroup use_role boundary. No public exploit code is identified in the provided data, but the attack is deterministic and requires no special tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026
Missing authorization checks in the Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform 2 automation-controller allow an authenticated organization workflow-admin - a delegated, non-superuser role - to escalate into the control plane by copying a WorkflowJobTemplate and then launching jobs pinned to instance groups they hold no use_role on. The deep-copy permission sanitizer re-validates only the inventory, unified_job_template, and credentials of each cloned node, silently carrying over instance_groups, execution_environment, and labels, so the copier becomes administrator of a workflow that executes attacker-influenced automation in the control-plane execution context (CVSS 9.9, scope changed, high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact). Exploitation is confirmed to require only a normal multi-tenant deployment plus workflow-admin rights; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no CISA KEV entry, and no vendor-released patch version was confirmed in the available intelligence.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch version was confirmed in the available intelligence, so the first action is to check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-84719 and Bugzilla bug 2527213 for a fixed automation-controller release and apply it as soon as Red Hat ships one; patch status should be treated as unconfirmed rather than absent. Until then, treat the missing InstanceGroup use_role check as a live authorization gap and compensate directly: remove the ability to create or copy WorkflowJobTemplates from organization workflow-admin and related delegated roles (this is the narrowest effective control, since the exploit depends on the copy operation, though it degrades self-service automation onboarding for tenants), and audit every instance group attached to existing workflows to find nodes pinned to the control-plane instance group that do not legitimately need it, then detach them so there is no privileged source template left to clone. Restrict membership of the control-plane instance group to a small, reviewed set of accounts and credentials, and prefer dedicated execution instance groups over control-plane execution for ordinary automation so that a successful copy yields less. As detective controls, enable and monitor the controller's activity stream and job audit logs for WorkflowJobTemplate copy events followed by launches executing under instance groups the launching user cannot see, and alert on any job running in the control-plane instance group that was initiated from a copied or recently modified workflow. None of these mitigations remove the underlying product defect, so they should be lifted or narrowed once a fixed version is available.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is the automation-controller (the AAP 2 / AWX-derived API and job-scheduling service) and the issue is a classic CWE-862 Missing Authorization failure in an object-cloning code path rather than in the primary request handler. AAP's RBAC model grants access to execution capacity through instance groups, which are attached to JobTemplates and WorkflowJobTemplates and consumed under an InstanceGroup use_role; the control-plane instance group is particularly sensitive because it is the execution context that runs the controller's own automation, so jobs placed there inherit elevated trust and reach. When a WorkflowJobTemplate is copied, the controller runs a deep-copy sanitizer that is supposed to strip or re-check any related object the copying user is not entitled to; per the reported flaw it validates only inventory, unified_job_template, and credentials on each cloned node, while instance_groups, execution_environment, and labels are preserved verbatim from the source. The attacker therefore inherits the source workflow's privileged placement without ever holding use_role on those groups, and the workflow-admin role needed to administer and copy organizations' workflows is a delegated, non-superuser permission - so this is a horizontal-to-vertical privilege boundary break rather than a superuser-only issue. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H matches this reading precisely: remotely reachable, low attack complexity, low-privileged authenticated actor, no user interaction, and a scope change because the compromise crosses from the tenant organization's boundary into the control plane.

DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw was found in the Ansible Automation Platform automation-controller. When a WorkflowJobTemplate is copied, the deep-copy permission sanitizer validates only the inventory, unified_job_template, and credentials of each cloned node and fails to check the instance_groups (and execution_environment and labels) that were preserved from the original. A user with organization workflow-admin permission but no role on the referenced instance groups can copy a workflow, become its administrator, and launch jobs pinned to instance groups they are not authorized to use - including the control-plane instance group - bypassing the InstanceGroup use_role boundary and causing attacker-influenced automation to run in the control-plane execution context.
Executive ViewAI
Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform 2's automation-controller contains a critical authorization flaw (CVE-2026-84719, CVSS 9.9, scope changed) that allows a delegated, non-superuser workflow-admin role in a multi-tenant deployment to escalate into the control plane and execute automation in a context they were never granted. Because Ansible is typically the system that holds privileged credentials and executes change across the broader estate, the exposure extends beyond the single delegated user to every team, environment, and system that the platform touches. No vendor-released patch is currently available, so leadership should treat this as an open, actively-managed risk requiring compensating controls rather than waiting for a fix.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: remove or tightly restrict the delegated organization workflow-admin role so only individually approved operators hold it; audit and re-grant instance group use_role on a least-privilege basis; block or administratively control WorkflowJobTemplate copying and review all existing clones for inherited instance_groups, execution_environment, and labels; separate credentials and instance groups so no workflow can execute in the control-plane context without explicit grant; enable and monitor automation-controller audit logs with alerting on template copies and anomalous job launches pinned to elevated instance groups; and reduce multi-tenant co-location of untrusted organizations on shared control-plane resources until the vendor patch is released.
