Moquette is a lightweight Java MQTT broker. Prior to 0.18.1, Moquette does not limit the depth of topic names and topic filters before processing them through recursive CTrie insertion and matching operations. A remote client can publish or subscribe with a deeply nested topic, causing a StackOverflowError that disrupts session processing and can deny service to broker clients. This issue is fixed in version 0.18.1.
AnalysisAI
Remote unauthenticated clients can crash a Moquette MQTT broker running 0.18.0 or earlier by publishing or subscribing with a topic name or filter that is nested to an extreme depth, triggering uncontrolled recursion in the broker's CTrie subscription structure and an uncaught StackOverflowError. Because Moquette accepts anonymous MQTT clients by default, network reachability is the only precondition, and the resulting crash lands on a SessionEventLoop that catches only InterruptedException and is never restarted, so the failure wedges every session co-located on that loop rather than just the attacker's connection - a broker-wide denial of service with high availability impact (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H; vendor-published CVSS 4.0 base 8.7). …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | No special conditions beyond network reachability - Moquette accepts anonymous clients by default, so a remote unauthenticated client can exploit this by sending a PUBLISH or SUBSCRIBE whose topic name/filter exceeds a deeply nested '/'-delimited depth (the fix caps at MAX_TOPIC_DEPTH=1024), triggering recursive CTrie processing. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine but bounded risk. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Moquette 0.18.1, the version that introduces BrokerConstants.MAX_TOPIC_DEPTH (1024) and rejects over-deep PUBLISH and SUBSCRIBE traffic with a connection drop while trapping oversized trie insertions as caught IllegalStateException. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all Moquette MQTT broker deployments and confirm which are running version 0.18.0 or earlier; isolate these brokers from untrusted networks where feasible and enable authentication to block anonymous clients. …
