MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated WordPress account with the Author role or higher on a site running Subscribe Forms before 1.6.3, and the attacker must edit a form's vulnerable setting. Payload only fires when a victim loads a page that embeds the affected form (UI:R), so a public-facing page must actually use the form. Limiting factors: privileged account needed (not unauthenticated), victim page-view required, and the impact is client-side script execution rather than direct server compromise. This is not remotely exploitable against a default install without an Author+ credential. |
| Impact | Real-world risk is moderate and gated by privilege, not a top-tier priority. The WPScan/NVD CVSS 3.1 vector (6.8, AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) requires an authenticated actor at Author level or above, and requires a visitor to view the page (UI:R), so exploitation is neither drive-by nor unauthenticated. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no signal of active or automated exploitation - this is a disclosure-driven finding, not an observed campaign. Two internal inconsistencies should be flagged: (1) the vector encodes PR:H yet the description says the attacker only needs the Author role, which is a low-privilege contributor tier - PR:L is more defensible than PR:H; and (2) it encodes S:U with a full C:H/I:H/A:H triad, but a stored XSS whose payload deliberately runs in administrator and logged-out visitor sessions crosses a privilege/security boundary (S:C) while realistically delivering C:L/I:L rather than a full high triad. Net: a genuine stored-XSS defect worth patching, but the 6.8 is somewhat inflated by an overstated impact triad and an arguably wrong PR value. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds (or phishes/registers into) an Author-level account on the WordPress site edits a Subscribe Forms form and places a JavaScript payload in the vulnerable form setting, which is not escaped when the form is rendered. When any visitor - including a logged-out reader or an administrator browsing the site - loads a page embedding that form, the script executes in their session, enabling session/cookie theft or admin-action forgery. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the Subscribe Forms WordPress plugin before 1.6.3 allows an authenticated user with the Author role or higher to inject JavaScript into a form setting that is later rendered without sanitisation, so the payload executes in the browser of any visitor - including logged-out users and administrators - who loads a page that embeds that form. Exploitation is gated by two conditions: the attacker must hold a privileged WordPress account on the target site, and a victim must actually view a page containing the affected form (user interaction is required for the payload to fire). No public exploit code or CISA KEV entry has been identified at time of analysis, and the practical risk is moderate rather than top-tier because a valid Author+ credential is a prerequisite and the outcome is client-side script execution rather than direct server compromise.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade the Subscribe Forms WordPress plugin to version 1.6.3 or later, which is the first release in which the vulnerable form setting is properly sanitised and escaped on output - apply this through the WordPress plugin updater or by downloading the fixed package directly, and confirm the installed version afterwards in the Plugins list. If the update cannot be applied immediately, compensating controls should target the privilege and page-view prerequisites rather than the payload itself: remove the Author role from untrusted accounts and audit existing users for unnecessary Author-or-above capabilities, since only such accounts can plant the stored payload - the trade-off is that legitimate contributors lose the ability to publish and edit forms; alternatively, disable or unpublish any Subscribe Forms form embedded on public-facing pages until patched, which stops the stored script from reaching logged-out visitors and administrators but temporarily removes subscription functionality from the site; a WAF or content-security-policy rule that blocks inline script from the plugin's render endpoint can blunt exploitation but is bypassable and may break legitimate form styling or analytics. Site owners should also treat any page that already embeds an unpatched form as potentially contaminated and re-save or recreate the affected form settings after upgrading, since the malicious value is stored in the database and may persist beyond the plugin update. Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralisation of Input During Web Page Generation, i.e. cross-site scripting) in the Subscribe Forms WordPress plugin: one of the plugin's form settings is saved to the WordPress database without sanitisation and is then echoed back into HTML output without escaping, so a value containing HTML/JavaScript is stored and replayed to every viewer of the rendered form. Because the injected content is persisted in the database, this is a stored (persistent) XSS rather than a reflected one - the malicious markup is served to anonymous visitors and to logged-in administrators alike, giving the attacker a path to session-related client-side actions such as reading cookies, performing actions as the victim in the admin UI, or redirecting users. The affected technology stack is ordinary WordPress plugin code - PHP rendering form markup from option/custom-post meta data - and the relevant attack surface is the admin-side form-editing screen accessible to Author-and-above roles, combined with whatever front-end page or widget embeds the form. Note that the NVD-published vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) differs from our independent assessment (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N): we assess the privilege requirement as that of a low-privileged Author account rather than a full administrator, and because the script executes in the context of a different user's browser session we treat the scope as changed (S:C) with limited confidentiality and integrity impact rather than unchanged scope with high impact. No CPE strings were supplied with the advisory data, but the EUVD record places the affected range at Subscribe Forms 1.4.1 through versions prior to 1.6.3.

The Subscribe Forms WordPress plugin before 1.6.3 does not sanitise and escape one of its form settings before outputting it in a page, allowing authenticated users with the Author role and above to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks that execute in the browser of any visitor who views a page embedding the form, including logged-out visitors and administrators.
