Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to already possess a valid credential - an OAuth application or API key - scoped to Admin.Read on a Cloudreve instance prior to 4.18.0; this is the concrete limiting factor (PR:H). Given such a token, no further conditions or user interaction are needed: the wopi GET and mail POST tool routes lack the AdminWrite scope enforcement, so the read-only token can probe configured WOPI service endpoints and send arbitrary test email via the server's SMTP settings. Impact is bounded to information probing and SMTP misuse; there is no code execution, no data-at-rest disclosure, and no availability impact. The realistic exposure is limited to environments that provision narrowly-scoped admin API tokens and treat Admin.Read as a genuine read-only boundary.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority issue whose signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 3.8) correctly reflects a network-reachable but privilege-gated flaw: exploitation requires the attacker to already hold a valid, admin-scoped credential (an OAuth application or API key granted Admin.Read), which is why PR is High despite the read-only intent. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV entry, and no public POC were supplied, so there is no evidence of exploitation interest - and the SSVC-relevant technical impact is Partial at most (WOPI endpoint probing plus arbitrary test-email through the configured SMTP server, no data-at-rest confidentiality, no availability loss). The nature of the bug is a scope-confusion/authorization gap (CWE-862), not an authentication bypass: the token authenticates normally and is simply permitted actions beyond its intended read-only boundary. There are no conflicting signals in the input; the main caveat is that the Tags label this 'Authentication Bypass,' which misstates the mechanism. Overall this is a high-CVSS-is-not-the-case scenario - it is correctly scored low and should be treated as routine patch hygiene, not an urgent response item.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An operator issues an OAuth application or API key scoped only to Admin.Read (e.g., for a read-only monitoring integration), assuming it cannot change server state. Because the wopi GET and mail POST tool routes omit the AdminWrite scope check, the token holder invokes them to enumerate configured WOPI service endpoints and trigger arbitrary test emails through the server's SMTP configuration - actions that should require write privileges. No public exploit code was identified; exploitation is trivial for anyone already possessing such a scoped token.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026

Cloudreve instances running versions prior to 4.18.0 fail to enforce write-scope authorization on two admin tool routes, so an attacker who already holds a valid OAuth application or API key scoped to Admin.Read can exceed that token's read-only boundary. Concretely, the misconfigured wopi GET and mail POST endpoints let such an authenticated token holder (PR:H in the CVSS vector) probe configured WOPI service endpoints and send arbitrary test email through the server's SMTP configuration, with no user interaction required. Impact is bounded to information probing and SMTP misuse - confidentiality and integrity are each rated Low, availability is unaffected, and the overall CVSS base score is 3.8; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no indication of active exploitation. The exposure is realistic only in deployments that provision narrowly-scoped admin API tokens and treat Admin.Read as a true read-only boundary.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 4.18.0 - upgrade Cloudreve to version 4.18.0 or later, which applies middleware.RequiredScopes(types.ScopeAdminWrite) to the wopi and mail admin tool routes and re-establishes the read/write scope boundary; see the release notes at https://github.com/cloudreve/cloudreve/releases/tag/4.18.0 and the advisory at https://github.com/cloudreve/cloudreve/security/advisories/GHSA-w89x-c962-c44g. If upgrading immediately is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to stop treating Admin.Read as harmless: audit and revoke or rotate any OAuth applications and API keys currently holding only Admin.Read on affected instances, and restrict new issuance of narrowly-scoped admin tokens to trusted operators only (trade-off: this breaks legitimate read-only automation and monitoring integrations until they are re-provisioned with appropriately reviewed credentials). Administrators can also temporarily reduce blast radius by removing or blanking the SMTP configuration on the instance so the mail tool cannot deliver messages and by ensuring no WOPI service endpoints are configured for probing (trade-off: this disables legitimate outbound mail and Office/WOPI document editing features for all users). Network-level restrictions limiting who can reach the admin API surface add defense in depth but do not correct the underlying missing authorization check, so they should be considered temporary only.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) in Cloudreve's Gin-based routing layer. In routers/router.go, the tool.GET("wopi") and tool.POST("mail") routes are registered on an admin tool group that inherits only the ScopeAdminRead requirement, while neighboring state-changing admin tool routes additionally apply middleware.RequiredScopes(types.ScopeAdminWrite). Because that second middleware is absent, the scope check never distinguishes a read-scoped token from a write-scoped one for these two handlers, so an OAuth application or API key limited to Admin.Read is treated as authorized for actions that mutate or exercise server-side integrations: the WOPI handler reaches out to configured WOPI service endpoints, and the mail handler uses the instance's configured SMTP settings to deliver test messages. The upstream fix commit bce08f88e9d8f881e78fd18e7a6598b31922c492 simply adds middleware.RequiredScopes(types.ScopeAdminWrite) to both route registrations, restoring the intended scope boundary (the same commit also bumps the assets submodule). CPE data identifies the affected product line as cpe:2.3:a:cloudreve:cloudreve:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. the Cloudreve server before the 4.18.0 release. Note that this is an authorization-boundary weakness, not an authentication bypass in the classic sense: the attacker must first legitimately obtain an Admin.Read-scoped credential, and the bug is that this narrow credential grants more capability than its scope implies.

DescriptionCVE.org

Cloudreve is a self-hosted file management and sharing system. Prior to 4.18.0, tool.GET("wopi") and tool.POST("mail") in routers/router.go inherit ScopeAdminRead but omit the RequiredScopes(types.ScopeAdminWrite) middleware applied to neighboring state-changing admin tool routes. An OAuth application or API key limited to Admin.Read can therefore probe configured WOPI service endpoints and send arbitrary test email through the server SMTP configuration, exceeding the token's intended read-only authorization boundary. This issue is fixed in version 4.18.0.
