Vector is a high-performance observability data pipeline. From 0.15.0 until 0.57.0, the logstash source reads a 32-bit compressed-frame length from the network and uses it to size an in-memory buffer without an upper bound. An unauthenticated remote peer that can reach the default 0.0.0.0:5044 listener can send a minimal frame declaring a multi-gigabyte payload, causing an excessive allocation that can abort Vector or invoke the host OOM killer. Because the allocation follows the declared length rather than bytes transmitted, the attacker has low resource cost, and process termination can halt log ingestion for every tenant on a shared pipeline. This issue is fixed in version 0.57.0.
AnalysisAI
Unauthenticated remote attackers who can reach the Vector logstash source listener (default 0.0.0.0:5044) can force a multi-gigabyte memory allocation and terminate the process by sending a single minimal Lumberjack frame that merely declares a huge compressed-frame length, without transmitting those bytes. Deployments running the logstash source in Vector 0.15.0 through 0.56.x are affected; the issue is fixed in 0.57.0 by capping declared and decompressed frame sizes. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires the Vector `logstash` source to be enabled and network-reachable; when enabled it binds the default 0.0.0.0:5044 listener, and no authentication or user interaction is needed to send the malicious frame. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a real, credible availability threat but strictly a denial-of-service issue, not information disclosure. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: 0.57.0 - upgrade Vector to 0.57.0 or later (https://github.com/vectordotdev/vector/releases/tag/v0.57.0), which caps declared frame and compressed/decompressed payload sizes; on 0.57.0+ the global decompressed-size ceiling defaults to 100 MiB and can be tuned lower with `--max-decompressed-size-bytes` or the `VECTOR_MAX_DECOMPRESSED_SIZE_BYTES` environment variable, with the trade-off that legitimate large frames or compressed batches above the configured limit will be rejected. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |

Within 24 hours, inventory all Vector deployments and confirm which instances run versions 0.15.0 through 0.56.x; restrict network access to the logstash source listener (default TCP 5044) to trusted log forwarders only. …
