MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Command and Control, Persistence The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the attacker to reach the Save Handler in codeEditor.php and control both the filename and file content passed to file_put_contents, with the target directory web-servable so the written .php file can be executed. Vendor rates it as remote unauthenticated (PR:N/UI:N) against php-file-manager-with-code-editor up to 3.0, but file-manager/code-editor applications commonly place such save functions behind an application login - if so, a valid session or credentials are the real limiting factor. Limiting factors: obscure/rare product with negligible deployment; no fixed version available (vendor unresponsive, rolling GitHub release); the upload directory must permit PHP execution. |
| Impact | The vendor's CVSS 4.0 score of 5.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) materially understates the technical impact. CWE-434 unrestricted upload here reaches file_put_contents in a Save Handler with attacker-controlled filename AND content - writing an attacker-chosen .php file into a web-served directory yields a webshell and full PHP remote code execution, which is a High confidentiality/integrity/availability outcome, not the Low triad the vendor assigned. The exploit chain conditions (AV:N/AC:L/UI:N) are correctly rated as easy and remote. Exploitation status: publicly available exploit code exists (VulDB reports the exploit was disclosed to the public); this is NOT active exploitation - there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score provided, so exploitation is proven feasible but not confirmed in the wild. The vendor's PR:N is questionable: a file-manager/code-editor Save Handler is typically gated behind an application login, which would raise privileges to PR:L; the description does not confirm whether the Save Handler is reachable pre-authentication. Net: high technical severity (effective RCE) but low real-world urgency given the obscure, tiny-footprint product and absence of KEV/EPSS/active-exploitation signals. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A remote attacker reaches the codeEditor.php Save Handler and submits a request specifying a filename ending in .php with a PHP payload as the content; file_put_contents writes the webshell into a web-accessible path. The attacker then browses to the uploaded file to execute arbitrary PHP as the web-server user. Public exploit code exists per VulDB, lowering the skill barrier. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026
Unrestricted file upload in JosephChuks php-file-manager-with-code-editor through version 3.0 lets remote attackers write attacker-controlled files, including executable PHP, to the server by manipulating the filename and content arguments passed to file_put_contents in codeEditor.php's Save Handler, which can result in remote code execution wherever the write target is web-servable. The vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector indicates an unauthenticated attack (PR:N/UI:N) against the affected component, though file-manager and code-editor front ends are commonly placed behind an application login, in which case a valid session or credentials could be the real limiting factor. Publicly available exploit code exists (the disclosure was made public, and the vendor was contacted about it but did not respond); there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score was provided, and the product has negligible real-world deployment.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch has been identified at time of analysis: the vendor was contacted early about the disclosure and did not respond, and the project is published as a rolling GitHub release with no tagged fixed version or security advisory, so upgrading to a patched release is not currently an option. Because the flaw is an unrestricted upload in the Save Handler of codeEditor.php, the most direct compensating controls are to remove or disable the code-editor save functionality (delete/deny access to codeEditor.php) at the cost of losing in-browser editing, and to require authentication in front of the entire application, since a login gate removes the unauthenticated path even though credentials would then be the attacker prerequisite. Additionally, configure the web server so that no user-writable directory executes PHP - for Apache, set php_flag engine off or use an <FilesMatch> handler override in the upload directory; for nginx, add a location block that returns 403 for \.php$ inside the writable path - trading away the ability to serve any legitimate PHP from that directory, and ensure the upload/save directory is not web-accessible at all, which may break file preview features. Apply strict server-side filename validation (whitelist extensions, strip path separators and traversal sequences, force an allow-listed destination directory) as a code-level patch to file_put_contents, and front the application with a WAF rule that blocks requests submitting .php/.phtml filenames to codeEditor.php. Given the product's negligible deployment footprint, organizations unable to implement these controls should consider removing the application entirely.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is a PHP web application that combines a file manager with an in-browser code editor. Its Save Handler in codeEditor.php calls the PHP function file_put_contents with caller-supplied filename and content arguments from an HTTP request, and it does not adequately validate or sanitize the filename - the classic CWE-434 (Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type) pattern. Because the filename is attacker-controlled, an attacker can supply a path that both escapes the intended directory (path traversal) and carries a dangerous extension such as .php; because the content is attacker-controlled, the resulting file can contain arbitrary PHP code. If the destination path resolves to a directory served by the web server with PHP execution enabled, the uploaded file becomes executable server-side code. The CPE record cpe:2.3:a:josephchuks:php-file-manager-with-code-editor:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* uses a wildcard version, indicating the vendor's CPE mapping does not restrict the impact to a specific release; ENISA EUVD (EUVD-2026-84426) pins the reported affected version to 3.0. Note that the vendor's CVSS 4.0 score of 5.5 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) rates confidentiality, integrity and availability impact as Low and, in the independent assessment, materially understates the technical impact; that assessment re-scores the issue as CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, reflecting that arbitrary file write with executable content yields high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact when preconditions are met.
