Exploitation Conditions

Requires a Chartbrew instance (prior to 5.2.3) with a chart backed by a ClickHouse data source that uses variable binding in its query, where the attacker can supply the variable value. Unauthenticated exploitation is possible specifically when that chart is served through a public dashboard, which exposes the vulnerable applySqlVariables() path without a login; on non-public dashboards the same path requires an authenticated session. Impact escalation to file access or internal-network reachability further depends on the ClickHouse server configuration permitting such operations (e.g. file table functions / URL access). Limiting factors: the ClickHouse plugin must be in use, the query must include variable binding, and the fix (escapeBackslash:true) closes the vector entirely in 5.2.3.

Impact

This is a genuine, high-priority SQL injection (CWE-89) with a credible unauthenticated path. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N, score 7.9) indicates network-reachable, low-complexity, no-privilege, no-user-interaction exploitation, which is consistent with the description's statement that public dashboards expose the vulnerable variable-binding path without authentication. Note an internal quirk in the vendor vector: the vulnerable-system impacts (VC/VI/VA) are all N while subsequent-system impacts (SC/SI/SA) are all H - the vendor modeled the impact as falling on the connected ClickHouse database rather than the Chartbrew app itself, which is defensible for injection into a downstream data store but makes the raw metric look counterintuitive. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no standalone weaponized exploit are present in the input - only the fix commit diff and a regression unit test demonstrating the break-out payload. Therefore exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The real-world risk is moderated by prevalence: Chartbrew is a niche open-source BI tool, so this is a real technical priority for the specific population running ClickHouse-backed public dashboards, not a widespread internet-scale threat. Conflict to verify: PR:N/unauthenticated is only true when a public dashboard exposes the affected chart; for private dashboards the same flaw requires an authenticated session.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker browses a Chartbrew public dashboard whose chart is backed by ClickHouse and accepts a variable binding. They submit a variable value containing a backslash immediately before a quote (e.g. x\' OR 1=1 -- ); the missing escapeBackslash option means quote-doubling no longer keeps the value inside its SQL string literal, so the injected clause executes as arbitrary ClickHouse SQL to exfiltrate data or, where the DB config permits, read files or reach internal network resources. No public weaponized exploit is published, but the vendor's own regression test in the fix commit demonstrates the exact break-out payload, and low attack complexity with no authentication (on public dashboards) makes this readily reproducible.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026

SQL injection in Chartbrew versions prior to 5.2.3 allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to break out of an intended string literal and execute arbitrary ClickHouse SQL whenever a ClickHouse-backed chart uses variable binding and the attacker controls the variable value; the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) confirms no privileges or user interaction are required, and the subsequent scope increase (SC:H/SI:H/SA:H) reflects impact landing on the ClickHouse data source rather than Chartbrew itself. The vulnerable path is fully exposed through public dashboards, while non-public dashboards require an authenticated session. Exploitation can disclose data stored in the ClickHouse instance and, where the ClickHouse configuration permits file or URL table functions, reach local files or internal network resources; vendor-released patch: 5.2.3, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. This is a genuine, high-priority CWE-89 issue with a credible unauthenticated path, though its reachability depends on the deployment using the ClickHouse plugin with variable bindings.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Chartbrew to version 5.2.3, which is the vendor-released patch; the fix is the upstream commit 5f95d07b5fee7f69c9d1242b5c99ea11ff046341 (https://github.com/chartbrew/chartbrew/commit/5f95d07b5fee7f69c9d1242b5c99ea11ff046341), which adds { escapeBackslash: true } to the applySqlVariables() call in the ClickHouse protocol. If immediate upgrading is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable public dashboard sharing for any chart backed by a ClickHouse source, since that is what converts this from an authenticated-only issue into an unauthenticated one - the trade-off is loss of external dashboard viewing. Alternatively, remove variable bindings from ClickHouse-backed chart queries (replacing them with static, reviewed SQL), accepting reduced dashboard flexibility. On the ClickHouse side, harden the data source account with least privilege: grant read-only access to specific tables, and revoke or restrict access to file(), url(), remote(), s3(), and similar table functions, and where feasible disable them server-side; this blocks the escalation from data disclosure to local file reads or internal network SSRF, but will break legitimate dashboards that rely on those functions. Also ensure the ClickHouse endpoint is not reachable from untrusted networks and monitor ClickHouse query logs for injected literals containing backslash-quote sequences. Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic SQL injection (CWE-89) caused by dialect-mismatched string escaping in Chartbrew's shared variable-substitution helper. In server/sources/shared/sql/sql.variables.js, applySqlVariables() sanitizes values by doubling embedded single quotes, which is correct for SQL dialects that do not treat backslash as an escape character inside string literals. The ClickHouse protocol plugin (server/sources/plugins/clickhouse/clickhouse.protocol.js) invoked that helper without the escapeBackslash option, so a value such as a backslash immediately preceding a quote survived the quoting step and let the quote terminate the literal early, appending attacker-controlled SQL. ClickHouse, like MySQL, honors backslash escapes inside string literals, so the mismatch is exploitable rather than cosmetic. The upstream fix is a one-line change passing { escapeBackslash: true } to applySqlVariables() from the ClickHouse protocol, which neutralizes the bypass by escaping backslashes before quote doubling; the accompanying unit test asserts that the payload "x\\' OR 1=1 -- " is transformed into the safely quoted literal "'x\\\\'' OR 1=1 -- '". The affected component set is the Chartbrew server application (CPE cpe:2.3:a:chartbrew:chartbrew:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) combined with a ClickHouse data source connection and a query template containing variable bindings.

DescriptionCVE.org

Chartbrew is an open-source web application that can connect directly to databases and APIs and use the data to create charts. Prior to 5.2.3, Chartbrew's ClickHouse protocol in server/sources/plugins/clickhouse/clickhouse.protocol.js calls applySqlVariables() from server/sources/shared/sql/sql.variables.js without enabling the escapeBackslash option. For a ClickHouse-backed chart with variable binding, an attacker can supply a backslash before a quote so quote doubling does not keep the value within its intended SQL string literal. Public dashboards can expose this path without authentication, and successful exploitation can execute arbitrary ClickHouse SQL to disclose data or, when the database configuration permits, access files or internal network resources. This issue is fixed in version 5.2.3.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Chartbrew deployments that expose dashboards publicly and query ClickHouse are vulnerable to an unauthenticated SQL injection that lets an outside attacker read the data behind those charts and potentially pivot into internal network or file resources reachable from ClickHouse. Any organization using Chartbrew as a customer-facing or otherwise public analytics layer over ClickHouse should treat this as an urgent exposure of its data platform rather than a routine application bug. The vendor has released version 5.2.3 to correct the flaw, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
