| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated MISP account holding the specific perm_galaxy_editor permission to create or modify a galaxy name containing HTML/JavaScript (the injection vector). The payload only fires when a second user navigates to the galaxy matrix statistics page (app/View/Users/statistics_galaxymatrix.ctp), so victim user interaction is mandatory (UI:P). This limits realistic impact to multi-user MISP instances where at least one user has galaxy-editing rights and other users consult the statistics view; single-user or read-only-community deployments are not meaningfully exposed. Affected versions are MISP prior to 2.5.47; upgrading applies the h() output-encoding fix. |
| Impact | This is a stored/persistent cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-79) in MISP's galaxy matrix statistics view, rated by the vendor at CVSS 4.0 6.3 (medium). The signals are internally consistent and point to a moderate, not urgent, priority. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P) confirms network reach but requires an authenticated attacker holding the elevated perm_galaxy_editor permission (PR:L) and requires the victim to actively open the statistics page (UI:P). The vulnerable-system impact is only VC:L/VI:L/VA:N, while the subsequent-system metrics are rated SC:H/SI:H - the vendor's way of capturing that the injected script runs in another user's authenticated browser context (session hijacking/credential theft). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit (POC) were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Real-world risk is bounded by the trust model: the attacker must already be a semi-privileged MISP user (galaxy editor) attacking fellow instance users, so this is primarily an insider/privilege-escalation-within-application concern rather than an unauthenticated internet-facing threat. The source-code diff (adding h() output encoding) independently confirms the root cause and the fix, raising confidence in the technical accuracy of the advisory. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated MISP user with the perm_galaxy_editor permission creates or renames a galaxy so its name contains a JavaScript payload (e.g. an image/script tag). When any other user - potentially an administrator - later opens the galaxy matrix statistics page, the unescaped name is interpolated via sprintf() into the HTML and the script executes in their session, enabling cookie/session theft or actions performed as the victim. No public POC was provided, but the single-line source diff makes the payload trivially reconstructable. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in MISP before 2.5.47 allows an authenticated user holding the perm_galaxy_editor permission to create or modify a galaxy whose name contains arbitrary HTML or JavaScript markup; because the galaxy name is interpolated verbatim via sprintf() into app/View/Users/statistics_galaxymatrix.ctp, the payload executes in the browser of any other user who later opens the galaxy matrix statistics page. Successful exploitation enables session hijacking, credential theft, data exfiltration, or attacker-controlled actions performed within the victim's MISP session, and requires victim interaction (UI:P) since the malicious page must be visited; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and the flaw is rated medium (CVSS 4.0 6.3). Realistic exposure is limited to multi-user MISP instances where at least one account has galaxy-editing rights and other users consult the statistics view.
RemediationAI
Upgrade MISP to version 2.5.47 or later, which contains the vendor-released patch in commit 6b7637bf4 (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/6b7637bf4) that HTML-encodes the galaxy name via h($galaxyName) in app/View/Users/statistics_galaxymatrix.ctp; this is the primary and only complete fix and requires no configuration change. Where immediate upgrading is not possible, compensate by restricting the perm_galaxy_editor permission to the smallest possible set of fully trusted administrators-this removes the injection vector but reduces the flexibility of your galaxy curation workflow-and by limiting access to the galaxy matrix statistics view (Users statistics pages) to trusted roles, which shrinks the victim pool at the cost of visibility for regular analysts. As a supplementary measure, review existing galaxy names for unexpected HTML or script markup and delete or rename any suspicious entries, since a successful payload persists until the galaxy is edited, and enforce a Content-Security-Policy that blocks inline script if your deployment front-end supports it, noting that this may break legitimate MISP UI elements and must be tested first. No vendor patch is unavailable in this case: the fixed version is explicitly 2.5.47.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) is a PHP/CakePHP threat-intelligence sharing application whose Views are written as .ctp templates. The vulnerable template app/View/Users/statistics_galaxymatrix.ctp built the heatmap caption with sprintf(__('A heatmap showing the usage of %s.'), $galaxyName), passing the editor-supplied galaxy name straight into HTML output without escaping. This is a classic CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) root cause: untrusted data is stored persistently (the galaxy record) and later rendered into a different user's page without output encoding, making it a stored/persistent XSS rather than a reflected one. CakePHP provides the h() helper for HTML-escaping, and the vendor fix wraps the variable as h($galaxyName), proving the root cause is missing contextual output encoding at the sink. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. MISP releases prior to 2.5.47. Because the injected script runs same-origin inside an authenticated MISP session, it inherits that user's privileges and CSRF-relevant context, which is why the scope is assessed as changed (S:C) with low confidentiality and integrity impact on both the vulnerable and subsequent components.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP's galaxy matrix statistics view (app/View/Users/statistics_galaxymatrix.ctp) renders the galaxy name directly into HTML output via sprintf() without any HTML encoding. An authenticated user holding the perm_galaxy_editor permission can create or modify a galaxy whose name contains arbitrary HTML or JavaScript markup. Because the value is interpolated verbatim into the page, any user who subsequently opens the galaxy matrix statistics page will have the embedded script executed in their browser context. This enables session hijacking, credential theft, data exfiltration, or the performance of arbitrary actions on behalf of the victim within the MISP application.
