Exploitation Conditions

Requires the Semantic MediaWiki extension (<=7.1.0) installed on a MediaWiki instance and use of the Special:Ask table output with an attacker-controlled sep (separator) parameter. Exploitation is unauthenticated because the same unsanitised table HTML is generated for the raw request output (request_type=raw), but it is LIMITED by UI:R - a victim must be induced to load the crafted query URL for the reflected payload to fire in their browser. Only markup-bearing separator values are dangerous; legitimate <br> variants remain whitelisted after the fix.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-severity issue, correctly rated CVSS 6.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) for a reflected XSS. The GitHub advisory (GHSA-7xv3-gf2g-498h) confirms the sep separator value is echoed verbatim into the HTML that joins Special:Ask table cells, and - critically - the same unsanitised HTML is produced for the raw request output (request_type=raw), making injection reachable without authentication (consistent with PR:N). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no standalone proof-of-concept exploit are present in the input, so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis (though the advisory describes the injection mechanism in enough detail to reconstruct it). Realistic risk is bounded by the UI:R requirement - a victim must load an attacker-crafted URL/parameter - placing this in the 'classic reflected XSS, patch promptly but not emergency' tier rather than a mass-exploitation priority. The S:C (scope change) and C:L/I:L reflect that injected script executes in the victim's authenticated wiki session, enabling session/credential theft and UI defacement within that trusted origin. No conflicting signals: network vector, low complexity, and unauth reachability are all corroborated by the advisory text.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a Special:Ask query URL (or a raw request via request_type=raw) whose sep separator parameter contains HTML/JavaScript markup, then lures a wiki user into loading it. The unescaped separator is reflected into the table cell-join HTML and executes in the victim's browser under the wiki's trusted origin, allowing session cookie theft or actions as the victim. No authentication is required to trigger the reflected payload, and the advisory documents the injection point though no packaged exploit is provided.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

Reflected cross-site scripting in Semantic MediaWiki 7.1.0 and earlier allows unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary HTML markup into the Special:Ask table output by abusing the sep (separator) parameter, which was inserted verbatim into the HTML that joins a table cell's values. Because the same unsanitized table HTML is produced for the raw request output (request_type=raw), no authentication is needed to reach the injection, though exploitation is limited by user interaction: a victim must be induced to load a crafted query URL for the payload to execute in their browser. The issue is correctly rated CVSS 6.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) as a moderate-severity reflected XSS; no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has shipped a fix in version 7.2.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to version 7.2.0, which escapes the sep parameter in all non-wiki output modes (HTML, raw request, and file) while explicitly whitelisting safe <br> separator variants; this is the vendor-released patch and the only complete fix. Installs managed via Composer should update the composer/mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki package to 7.2.0 or later and run the standard MediaWiki update/maintenance steps, and the deployment should be verified so the extension directory actually reflects the new release. If immediate upgrading is not possible, compensating controls are limited because the injection is reflected and unauthenticated: restrict or block public access to the Special:Ask page and to request_type=raw query URLs at the web server or WAF layer, since those are the only delivery paths for the payload - the trade-off is that legitimate ask queries performed by users outside the trusted network, or any automation relying on raw output, will break. Site operators can additionally deploy a WAF rule that rejects request parameters containing angle brackets or HTML tags in the sep parameter, accepting the risk of false positives on exotic but legitimate separators, and should keep the SMW extension current because the advisory explicitly warns maintainers not to expand the allowed HTML surface in this renderer. Note that generic Content-Security-Policy hardening may reduce payload execution but does not fix the underlying output-encoding defect, so it should only be treated as a temporary supplement to patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) is an open-source extension for MediaWiki that lets editors store and query structured data inside wiki pages. Its Special:Ask page renders query results in tabular form, and the table renderer accepts a sep parameter that determines how multiple values in a single cell are joined together. Prior to 7.2.0 the renderer concatenated that separator into the generated HTML without encoding it, a classic CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation / cross-site scripting) root cause in which user-controlled input is written directly into a markup context instead of an escaped text context. The flaw is compounded because SMW exposes a raw request output mode (request_type=raw) that emits the same unsanitized table HTML outside the normal wiki skin, so the injection surface is reachable without any authenticated session or edit privileges. The fix in 7.2.0 applies output escaping to sep in all non-wiki output modes (HTML, raw request, and file) while retaining a narrow explicit whitelist that preserves safe <br> line-break variants - meaning separator values that are plain text or benign line breaks continue to work, but values containing arbitrary markup are neutralized.

DescriptionCVE.org

Semantic MediaWiki is a free, open-source extension to MediaWiki that lets users store and query data within the wiki's pages. Prior to version 7.2.0, sep was inserted verbatim into HTML cell joins. This made it possible to inject HTML through the separator value. Version 7.2.0 fixes the issue.
