| Impact | This is a legitimate but moderate-priority web vulnerability. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 6.1) is the textbook signature of a reflected XSS: network-reachable, low complexity, no privileges, but requiring victim interaction. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public exploit code is present in the provided intelligence - so this is not a confirmed-exploited or mass-exploitation candidate. The impact is bounded (C:L/I:L, A:N): a successful attack executes script in the victim's browser session but does not directly compromise the server or provide code execution. Reflected XSS also lacks the persistence of stored XSS, requiring a social-engineering lure per victim. Net: a real, patch-worthy issue for any exposed Semantic MediaWiki wiki, but not an emergency relative to unauthenticated RCE-class bugs. No conflicting signals were observed between the CVSS vector and the description - both consistently describe a remote, interaction-dependent reflected XSS. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in Semantic MediaWiki 7.1.0 and earlier allows an attacker to inject script into the Special:SearchByProperty page through the property and value query parameters, executing arbitrary JavaScript in the browser of any wiki user lured to a crafted URL. Rated CVSS 6.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N), the flaw needs no authentication to construct or deliver the malicious link but does require victim interaction (UI:R), and impact is confined to the victim's browser session with no server-side code execution. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) was identified at time of analysis; the vendor released a fix in SMW 7.2.0 that escapes both the reflected form value and the derived error messages.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to 7.2.0 (released July 17, 2026) - vendor-released patch: 7.2.0, which escapes the form value before it is placed back into the input field and escapes derived error messages before rendering them into HTML; the release notes are at https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/releases/tag/7.2.0 and the advisory at https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-59xw-qv23-j3rc. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict or block access to the Special:SearchByProperty page (for example via web-server rules or MediaWiki page restrictions) - the trade-off is that legitimate property-based search functionality is lost for all users. Deploying a WAF or reverse-proxy rule that strips or encodes script-bearing markup in the property and value query parameters can blunt known payload shapes, but such filters are easily bypassed through alternate encodings and should be treated only as a stopgap. Because exploitation requires a victim to click an attacker-supplied link, user awareness training and link-scanning at the mail/web gateway add marginal defense, while short-lived session cookies reduce the window an injected script can abuse a logged-in user's session.

Technical ContextAI · show details
This is a classic CWE-79 output-encoding failure in a PHP MediaWiki extension distributed as the Composer package mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki (CPE pkg:composer/mediawiki_semantic-media-wiki). The Special:SearchByProperty page renders a search form back to the user and also builds HTML error messages when a lookup fails; the value parameter (and, per the advisory title, the property parameter) was inserted into those output sinks without the encoding appropriate for the HTML context. The root cause class is improper neutralization of user-controlled input during web page generation, and the advisory's maintenance note highlights the subtlety that made it easy to miss: the vulnerable path treated validation output as trusted because it 'originated from validation,' even though that text is derived from attacker-supplied request data and therefore remains attacker-influenced. Because the reflection is non-persistent, the payload lives entirely in the URL and is rendered only for the user who opens it, which is why the scope is changed (S:C) but confidentiality and integrity impact remain low (C:L/I:L).

Classic reflected XSS: unauthenticated crafted URL (PR:N/AV:N/AC:L), victim must open link (UI:R), script escapes server context into victim browser (S:C), limited confidentiality/integrity impact (C:L/I:L), no availability effect.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Failure mode
The value parameter was reflected back into rendered output and error messaging paths without enough output-context encoding.
Remediation
- The form value is escaped before it is placed back into the input field.
- Derived error messages are also escaped before being rendered into HTML.
Maintenance note
Do not treat error text as trusted just because it originated from validation. Validation output can still be attacker-influenced.
