Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the Special:Ask result printer to be invoked with headers=plain and attacker-controlled mainlabel content, which is reflected into the table header (<th>) via the raw HTML path - this is the specific feature combination that triggers the flaw. Because it is reflected, the attacker must deliver a crafted URL and a victim must open it (UI:R), so successful exploitation depends on social engineering and on Special:Ask being reachable to the targeted user. Safe rendering modes (non-plain headers) are unaffected, and the flaw is fixed in 7.2.0; deployments on <= 7.1.0 that expose Special:Ask queries are the realistic exposure. No authentication is required to craft the malicious link, but impact scales with the privilege of the victim whose session runs the script.

Impact

This is a reflected cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-79) in Semantic MediaWiki's Special:Ask when headers=plain, where user-controlled mainlabel content is emitted into a <th> via a raw HTML path. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N = 6.1 Medium) is consistent with a reflected XSS delivered through a crafted URL: network reachable, low complexity, no privileges, but requiring victim interaction, with a scope change and limited confidentiality/integrity impact. There is NO EPSS score, NO CISA KEV listing, and NO public exploit code provided in the intelligence - so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The GHSA advisory (GHSA-3jp5-3h47-28qf) does describe the exact failure mode and sink, which lowers the bar for an attacker to reconstruct a payload, but that is not the same as a released PoC. Net: this is a genuine but medium-priority issue - real (vendor-confirmed, patched) yet gated on user interaction and yielding only session-context script execution rather than direct server compromise. No key signals conflict; the main gap is the absence of exploitation-probability data (EPSS/KEV/PoC), so prioritization should lean on deployment exposure of public Special:Ask pages rather than telemetry.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a Special:Ask query URL where the mainlabel parameter contains malicious HTML/JavaScript and the printer is set to headers=plain, then lures an authenticated wiki user (e.g., an admin) into clicking it. When the results table renders, the unescaped header text executes in the victim's browser session, enabling session/cookie theft or actions in the victim's context. No public exploit code is provided, though the advisory documents the vulnerable sink precisely.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

Reflected cross-site scripting (CWE-79) in Semantic MediaWiki 7.1.0 and earlier allows a crafted URL to execute script in a victim's browser session; the flaw is reached through the Special:Ask result printer when it is invoked with headers=plain and an attacker-controlled mainlabel value, which is written into the table header (<th>) through a raw HTML path instead of being escaped for the output context. The vulnerability is rated CVSS 6.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N), meaning no authentication is needed to craft the link, but exploitation depends on the victim opening the malicious URL (user interaction is required) and impact scales with the victim's wiki privileges. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis; the issue is fixed in Semantic MediaWiki 7.2.0, so deployments on 7.1.0 or earlier that expose Special:Ask queries are the realistic exposure.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Semantic MediaWiki 7.2.0, which is the first version containing the output-context escaping fix in the HTML/plain-header branch of TableResultPrinter (release notes: https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/releases/tag/7.2.0, advisory: https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-3jp5-3h47-28qf). Because this is a reflected XSS requiring the victim to open a crafted URL, temporary compensating controls until the upgrade is applied include restricting who can reach Special:Ask (for example via MediaWiki group permissions or a web application firewall rule blocking requests where headers=plain is combined with a mainlabel parameter containing markup - trade-off: legitimate plain-header queries with unusual labels may break), and reviewing whether untrusted users can set mainlabel content at all. Deploying a Content Security Policy that disallows inline script can reduce the impact of a successful injection but may break other wiki extensions, and note that the flaw is limited to plain-header rendering, so forcing non-plain header modes on any exposed queries eliminates the vulnerable path at the cost of losing that presentation format. Since no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, prioritization should focus on internet- or broad-audience wikis that expose Special:Ask to unauthenticated visitors.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Semantic MediaWiki extends MediaWiki with structured, queryable data, and its Special:Ask page renders query results through pluggable result printers; the affected component is the TableResultPrinter (packaged as composer/mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki). The root cause is the classic CWE-79 improper neutralization of user-supplied input during web page generation: when the plain header mode (headers=plain) is selected, the header string derived from the user-controllable mainlabel parameter is passed to the table renderer and emitted directly into the <th> element via a raw HTML path rather than through output-context escaping. Because the header value is display data and not a structural token, the correct fix is at the sink - the renderer owns the final HTML emission - and the upstream patch adds output-context escaping in the HTML/plain-header branch only, leaving non-plain, safe rendering modes untouched. The flaw is reflected rather than stored, so it requires the attacker to deliver a crafted Special:Ask URL, and the scope change (S:C) in the assessed vector reflects that script executing in the victim's browser context can act on the wider MediaWiki application beyond the vulnerable component.

DescriptionCVE.org

Failure mode

When headers=plain, table header text was emitted into <th> via a raw HTML path. User-controlled mainlabel content could therefore become executable HTML.

Remediation
  • TableResultPrinter now applies output-context escaping before passing plain headers to the table renderer.
  • The fix is limited to the HTML/plain-header branch so safe rendering modes are unaffected.
Why this is the right layer

The header value is not a structural token; it is display data. Sanitizing it at the sink is correct because the renderer owns the final HTML emission.
