1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated WordPress account with Contributor-level (edit_posts) capability or higher on a site running Magazine Blocks <=1.8.6; the plugin must be active with its Site Builder feature registering the mzb-builder-template post type (capability_type='post', REST-exposed) and the _mzb_template meta editable by edit_posts users. Exploitation is limited by that authentication requirement (no anonymous/unauthenticated path per PR:L) but needs no user interaction and no non-default configuration beyond having the plugin installed and having admin-authored builder templates present to overwrite.

Impact

This is a real but modest-priority issue best treated as a hardening/patch-when-convenient item rather than an emergency. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N = 4.3 Medium) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable via REST, low complexity, but requires an authenticated Contributor-or-above account (PR:L) and delivers integrity-only impact (I:L) with no confidentiality or availability loss. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present in the provided data, so exploitation is not confirmed or trending. The signals do not conflict - CVSS, absent EPSS/KEV, and the authorization-only root cause (CWE-862) all point to low-to-moderate real risk. One point of analyst tension: the description frames impact as site-wide defacement/phishing/SEO spam by swapping global builder templates, which is arguably higher business impact than I:L conveys (I:H is defensible), but scope stays unchanged and the vendor's I:L keeps the score conservative. The gating factor is that an attacker must already hold a Contributor account, which meaningfully limits opportunistic mass exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has obtained or been granted a Contributor-level WordPress account on a site running Magazine Blocks <=1.8.6 sends a crafted REST/edit request against the mzb-builder-template post type, editing the _mzb_template meta to demote an administrator's published header/footer/front-page template to draft and substitute their own block content. Because these templates render site-wide, every visitor then sees attacker-controlled content usable for defacement, phishing, or SEO spam. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though the fix changeset and referenced source lines make the mechanism straightforward to reproduce.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

Authorization bypass in the WordPress plugin Magazine Blocks (Blog Designer, Magazine & Newspaper Website Builder) through version 1.8.6 lets any authenticated user with Contributor-level access or above demote administrator-authored Site Builder templates - header, footer, front page, single, archive, 404 and search - to draft status and substitute their own block content, which is then rendered site-wide. The result is site defacement, phishing content injection and SEO spam on affected sites, with no user interaction required and no non-default configuration beyond having the plugin active and admin-authored templates present to overwrite. Exploitation requires a valid Contributor account (CVSS vector PR:L), so the practical exposure is limited to sites that grant contributor privileges, but the issue is real and should be patched; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and the assessed vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, 4.3) matches a modest-priority hardening fix rather than an emergency.

RemediationAI

Upgrade the Magazine Blocks plugin past 1.8.6 to the vendor release that includes the fixing changeset (referenced as Trac changeset 3656574: https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?reponame=&old=3656574%40magazine-blocks&new=3656574%40magazine-blocks); the plugin is distributed through the WordPress.org repository, so the update can be applied from the WordPress admin or WP-CLI. Note that the input data points to an upstream changeset rather than an explicitly named fixed tag, so verify the installed version after updating and confirm with the Wordfence advisory (https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/7f66d26a-8eb7-4b29-bb7f-afdd762be4b2?source=cve) if the patched version number needs to be pinned. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, reduce exposure by removing or downgrading Contributor accounts (change them to Subscriber) on any site running an affected version - the trade-off is that legitimate contributor workflows are disabled until the patch is applied. As a further compensating control, restrict REST access to the mzb-builder-template post type (for example by unregistering or blocking that route via a security plugin or a register_post_type_args/rest_pre_dispatch filter) and make the _mzb_template meta non-REST-writable (auth_callback returning false on register_post_meta); this closes the write path but may break the Site Builder admin UI for legitimate administrators, so it is a temporary measure. If the Site Builder feature is unused, disabling it removes the vulnerable post type entirely. Also inspect existing mzb-builder-template posts for unexpected draft/publish state changes or attacker-authored content, and audit the _mzb_template meta for tampering before restoring templates from backup.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Magazine Blocks is a WordPress page/magazine builder plugin published under the wpblockart namespace. Its Site Builder feature registers a custom post type, mzb-builder-template, using capability_type='post' and exposes it through the WordPress REST API, while the associated _mzb_template meta key is writable by any user holding the edit_posts capability - i.e., Contributor-level and above. Because the plugin's save_post() hook performs no ownership or role check before acting on that post type, a Contributor can trigger template mutations that should have been reserved for administrators. The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the action is gated only by the generic post capability mapping rather than an explicit capability check (for example edit_theme_options or a dedicated template capability), so the plugin effectively delegates template management authority to the lowest role that can edit posts. The vulnerable logic lives in includes/PostTypes/SiteBuilder.php (around lines 56, 116 and 138) with the save hook wired up in includes/MagazineBlocks.php (around line 98) at tag 1.8.6, per the referenced plugin Trac source links.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Magazine Blocks - Blog Designer, Magazine & Newspaper Website Builder, Page Builder with Posts Blocks, Post Grid plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 1.8.6. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to demote administrator-owned published builder templates (header, footer, front page, single, archive, 404, and search) to draft status and replace them with attacker-authored block content rendered site-wide, enabling defacement, phishing, and SEO spam. This is possible because the mzb-builder-template post type is registered with capability_type='post' and exposed via the REST API, and the _mzb_template meta key is accessible to any user with edit_posts capability, meaning Contributor-level users and above can trigger the vulnerable save_post() hook.
