DescriptionCVE.org

mport is the MidnightBSD Package Manager. Prior to 2.7.8, mport_verify_package() in libmport/verify.c could continue after MD5File() or SHA256_File() failed and compare an expected checksum with stale data in the hash buffer rather than a newly computed digest. An attacker able to influence an installed file or the conditions that make hashing fail could receive a misleading integrity result or hide a checksum failure. This issue is fixed in version 2.7.8.

AnalysisAI

Checksum verification in MidnightBSD's mport package manager before 2.7.8 can silently continue after a hashing failure, causing an expected checksum to be compared against stale hash-buffer contents instead of a freshly computed digest, so a local low-privileged attacker who can influence an installed file or induce the hashing failure can obtain a misleading integrity result or suppress a checksum mismatch. Exploitation requires local access with low privileges (CVSS PR:L) and conditions that make MD5File() or SHA256_File() fail (AT:P); the impact is limited to integrity of the verification outcome (I:L) with no confidentiality or availability effect, and the flaw is inert whenever hashing completes normally. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires local access with low privileges (PR:L) to the host running mport, plus the attacker's ability to either influence a file that mport has installed/tracks or induce the specific error conditions that cause MD5File() or SHA256_File() to fail (AT:P). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a genuinely LOW-priority issue, and the signals agree. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Vendor-released patch: upgrade mport to 2.7.8, the version in which mport_verify_package() and mport_recompute_checksums() no longer compare against stale or uncomputed hash data (see https://github.com/MidnightBSD/mport/releases/tag/2.7.8 and advisory https://github.com/MidnightBSD/mport/security/advisories/GHSA-hgmr-9p75-q5cg; the code change is commit cd9991c3cc1f60ecb3f378852ad8b5caa820e990 via PR #138). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
